President’s Report May 2018The regular season has come to an end and our angling choiceshave become much more limited. That doesn’t mean we can’t gofishing, it just means choosing where to go got a lot easier. While most of the big fish will have migrated upstream to spawn, there are enough immature fish in the lower reaches to keep usinterested.Duck shooting season is now open and I urge all our members totake care on the water and be aware of any hunters that mightbe looking for a stray bird or two.The Committee has set up some excellent club nights over thenext 4 months. Be sure to take advantage of the opportunitiesoffered. The annual dinner and awards presentation is set for 7July and we are looking forward to a great evening. Keep a closeeye on your email for all the developments. Finally, with winter fast approaching, please dress appropriatelyfor the chillier water and air temperatures. I doesn’t take long toget hypothermic when standing in cold water.Michael Stevenson
This is a letter that was sent from the club to Chairman F&G Stoke Nelson 7011 31st March 2018The ChairmanNelson Marlborough Fish & Game Council66 Champion RdRichmondWithholding period for trout taken from areas treated with 1080In 2016, the Ministry for Primary Industry (MPI) said it was of theopinion the any food safety risk can be mitigated if anglers avoidconsuming trout taken from waterways in a 1080 drop area within 7days of the poison baiting operation. This advice was based on a 2014report by the Cawthron Institute which investigated the uptake andelimination of 1080 in rainbow trout. We respectfully submit that the Cawthorn report does not support therecommendation from MPI of a 7 day waiting period. Our objection isbased on the following:The trout were given a dose of 1080 equivalent to 5g/kg of fish weight. This dose was calculated assuming the trout consumed 30 mice, each ofwhich had consumed a LD50 dose (8mg/kg) of 1080. Unfortunately, thedose was calculated by assuming the trout ingested 1080 only fromeating mice. While we agree that the trout in the experiment werehighly unlikely to have been able to eat that many mice, the dose is not:Cont ‘
extremely high’ given that a single 6 g bait pellet contains 9.6 mg of1080. The trout used could have easily consumed a single pellet whichwould have resulted in a dose almost double the experimental dose.Since the LD50 dose for trout is 50mg/kg, more than one pellet couldbe ingested by a trout and that trout survive to be caught by an angler. :The Maximum Residue limit set for 1080 is .001 mg/kg but residuesfound in the experimental trout far exceed that limit. In addition, theCawthron experiment was :concluded after 5 days when all the dosed fish still exhibitedunacceptable food quality levels of 1080 and the two fish tested at 5days showed a higher concentration than those tested at 84 hours. Itwas noted that this is a low number of replicates but it also indicates theresult at 48 hours may be the outlier and without further testing it is notpossible to determine which result is the norm.We further note the LD50 for most mammalian species is <1mg/kg andthe residues in the experimental fish could easily pose a lethal threat. Therefore until further research resolves the issue, we urge NelsonMarlborough Fish & Game Council recommend a longer Withholdingtime, and that Nelson Marlborough Fish & Game Council recommendMPI review the official opinion of 7 days being adequate. Lives areliterally at risk and we urge erring on the side of caution.Michael StevensonPresidentNelson Trout Fishing Club
c/- 16 Langbein Street Stoke,Nelson 5th May 2018The ChairmanFish CommitteeNelson Marlborough Fish and Game Council66 Champion Road.RichmondNelson The Nelson Trout Fishing Club, a club for everyonewho has a passion for trout fishing in the Nelson region, has apaid up membership of 85 members. Our website andFacebook pages are widely read, and our club’s newsletter hasa wide distribution. The club membership is inclusive of bothmen and woman, and represents a good cross section offreshwater anglers in the Nelson and Tasman districts. We request that the Fish committee consider the following forthe upcoming fishing seasonBan on triple hooks. With the emphasis on fish handling weconsider triple hooks reduce options for anglers to return fishto the water, and are not as effective as single hooks. :cont
Request that the Travers River be designated “fly only”.The Te Araroa Trail, is a continuous 3,000 km walking trackfrom Cape Reinga to Bluff, that goes via the Travers Valley,This track is advised as being open from November to April, into order cater for cold weather, or lambing etc. This trackattracts high numbers of users, according to the Te AraroaWebsite Te Araroa Trust Chief Executive Rob Wakelin saidmore than 550 people walked the entire length of the trailover the 2016-2017 summer season, and hundreds ofthousands more walked regional sections on shorter hikes andday walks up. :ContThis increase in number of people using the Travers Valleyhas meant an increase in the causal angler using spinningequipment. The Travers River is an example of pristine, ginclear water, sight fishing to large brown trout type of fishery. It is one of the better fly fishing rivers in our region. It isconsidered that by making this river fly only, it wouldenhance the experience of the pristine and clear water foranglers fishing for brown trout in that unique environment.Jean WillisSecretaryNelson Trout Fishing Club
Turangi trip Chris showing a couple of solid Rainbows
Just returned from a trip to the Twizel canals with Alan Ballard,Peter Williamsand a friend of Al's.You will see from the attached photo I had an amazing experience.A 30 lbrainbow jack.I also had 2x 12 lb and one 15 lb.Not a bad weekA 30 lb rainbow jack.I also had 2x 12 lb and one 15 lb.Not a bad week.Generally the fishing was slow .I think in the last 2 days of the trip we hadonly one fish amongst all of us.The big one and one of the 12lb fish took a white soft bait mounted on agreen tip weight/hook.The other 2 on a big glow bug at the end of an18 footleader suspended below a small bubble float.
\"Doing Time \"Since starting to fish for trout about two years ago and taking upfly fishing last September, I have been serving an apprenticeshipwith perseverance and determination.I decided to take advantage of a visit to my family in Rotoruawhen a week before leaving I found I was to stay at Ngongotahaa short walk away from the river of the same name which flowsinto Lake Rotorua.Wow, I started to remember the stories of all the fish that havebeen caught there - this could be exciting. I booked an extrabag for all my gear. I made sure I ticked off boots, rods, net, vest, flies and lures for spin fishing. It's all on I thought. My brother George offered his boat, but I asked if we could fish inthe river. So, an 8.30am start and a short walk, brought us to anarea of the river that looked good but oh dear how could I cast? The river was very narrow with foliage all around but George saidI could just drop my hook in and let it drift. That didn’t appeal tome because I thought with plenty of fish and two flies with a shortcast, I would be successful. The next hour went about as youwould imagine…I hooked up on every bush and weed within 100m. Never mind George says let's walk to the river mouth, there’sbetter space and the water looked good. Wow, I could even walkout quite distance. Now for the fish.Oh well, either they weren’t there or were smarter than I was.Later in the afternoon George suggested we go out in the boat.Back and fourth across the lake we trolled seeing only two otherboats on the water. Passing one our nephew says “Hi AuntyMary, caught anything?” I had to confess I hadn’t even hooked afish yet. The impudent nephew had the cheek to say he had twoin his boat. After we parted the ways, George’s daughter got astrike.George volunteered me to net it with turned out to be notsuch a good idea. :Cont
We were both over excited and after a couple of missed passeswith the net the fish decided it had enough of the squealing andthrashing about and threw the hook. Never mind George saidwe’ll try again early tomorrow.Six-thirty am and another beautiful morning. I wanted to fly fish atthe river mouth while George decided to have another go out onthe lake in his boat. The wager was a block of chocolate for theone that gets most. A phone call later and it’s George saying hehas three fish what's my tally? I regretfully had to say a block ofchocolate for him. That was the end of my visit having not landeda single fish.I’m glad to be home after a harrowing return journey. Thingsstarted to go downhill when we loaded my gear bag into the carand it split. Now we are in a huge rush because George onlyallowed 20 minutes to get to the bus depot. His wife Carol rushedaround and found a replacement which was smaller and had tobe sat on to cram everything into it. They both said “Don’t open itagain until you get home”. Although the bag was smaller, wesomehow managed to overload it by 4 kilos which meant I had anexcess baggage fee to take care of when I finally arrived at theairport in Auckland. In an effort to avoid the excess fee, I foolishlyignored their warning and spend the bag to off load some weightinto my carry-on. I managed to eventually get it to close again butfound out not only was it still to heavy, now my carry-on wasoverweight as well. With a heavy sigh, I put the extras back intothe bag (which now needed two people to sit on it to close) andpaid the $20 fee. Even with all that, I had to take both rods onboard as personal items.
