President FlylineFinally! Opening Day has arrived allowing us to thrash thewaters that have been forbidden for five months. Congratulationsto those members that have been able to get out and havelanded a big fish. It was great to run into other members on theriver even if Richard Boyden accused me of pinching his ‘posse’.if you have been out chasing trout, let us know by writing a shortarticle for the newsletter. This month’s club night was one not to be missed. Thanks toTony Entwistle for bringing Tor Nilsen from FlyTackle NZ whokindly supplied top of the range products for our examination. Thanks to Kevin Nansett as well for making sure we hadadequate supplies for the bar-b-que. Next month the West CoastF&G will be in to talk about fishing in their Region. The Committee has sent a formal letter to various MPs with ourobjection to the proposed Indigenous Species Bill. We try to stayout of politics but the attack on Fish & Game NZ and trout fishingwas too serious to ignore. We encourage members to be awareof the proposed legislation and make a private submission. The rain on the 10th was a welcome boost to low flows. It seemswe are never blessed with just enough rain to keep the rivers atgood fishable levels. With the new season, we have more choicesto find a stream that drops quickly after a storm but don’t forgetthe lower reaches that are open all year. They are often ignoredbecause everyone heads for the newly opened waters leavingthe fish in the winter areas more susceptible to being fooled.Lastly, I encourage all our members to practice their skills. Justlike no athlete can do their best without practicing, the skillsrequired to be a good fisherman need to be developed and keptfresh. The casting clinics provided a sound foundation butremember…’If you don’t use it, you lose it.’Stay safe on the water Michael Stevenson

Letter from Denise Green via Youth trustTo whom it may concernThis is a letter of support for Sport Fishing for Youth Trust in theNelson Region.Fostering Kids New Zealand supports any foster parents caringfor children who are not biologically their own. We do thisthrough free specialised training, critical support, advocacy, andbringing fostering families together for mutual support andevents. We have worked with this wonderful group for the last twoyears, where the organisation has provided our foster parentmembers with a kids’ day out fishing in the Appleby SalmonPonds. Over 40 families were involved in the event last year andit proved so popular that we are hoping to make it an annualhighlight for our very vulnerable children. The Sport Fishing forYouth Trust team were incredible with their kindness and supportand the event was made incredibly easy for our families. Wehave some very traumatised and challenging children in care andto see them beaming with pride and achievement after theircatch was something special to witness. We are more than happy to endorse the good work of this teamfor future funding.Kind RegardsDENISE GREENUpper South Regional CoordinatorFostering Kids New ZealandDDI: 03 9296578 / Cell: 0273693333Hours of work: Monday to Thursday 9am-2pmwww.fosteringkids.org.nz Support | Education | Encouragement Fostering Kids is the operating name of NZ Family and Foster Care Federation Inc. October Club Trip - Upper Buller River by Richard Boyden26th October seven club members arrived at Fish and Gameoffice to fish the upper Buller River . They were Mike Stevenson ,James McDonald , John Scoles ,Kevin Mansett ,Immo Neuman ,TrevorMcGowan and myself. The plan were to split into various beats of river area . First beatJames, Immo , and Richard -Firth sheep and beef farm . SecondBeat Mike and Kevin -Bevin dairy farm and third beat Trevorand John – McConchie Sheep Farm. All farm owners givenpermission to cross their farm and map of area given to eachfisherman.Report Beat One – 9:30 am arrived on the Firth farm and givenpermission to park next to house and all the barking huntawaydogs welcome us too .All electric fences were turn off . Jamesand Immo walk to the lower edge of the farm to fish a nice areaof the buller river and myself 100 metres from them upstream.Within 10 Minutes hook the first fish on a size 14 gold beadgreen flashnymph and landed a solid 2.5 pound brown trout .Released after a few photos by James and continue up the samepool and not long hook another brown trout of 3 pounds . Nothappy to have its photos taken the trout decided to slip out ofthe net while playing with the camera .Nice high condition factor fish . Immo and James continue fishingwith a dry Fly or nymph fly further up the river .We all found a serious problem “DIDYMO “ which needed to beremove every 2-3 cast from a nymph or dry fly . It waseverywhere and put us off returning to this area of the Bullerriver . On the bankside was very little blackberry bushes but other beats there werea lot and not possible to cross the swift Buller river . EitherJamesor Immo caught a fish or sight any .The Day ended by 4:00 pm for us and we agree it was aenjoyableday but question if we will be coming back to DIDYMO territory .

Fishing with DidymoKevin Nansett and I were assigned the beat furthest downstreambeginning above the first bridge upstream of Kawatiri Junction.Access was tricky because of a steep bank and large numbers ofblackberry vines and wild roses. On arrival at the water, theDidymo was rampant in all shallow water that wasn’t flowingswiftly. Chunks were floating in the current and proved a massivenuisance all day.We followed the river upstream for about 50 m until we foundsome water that looked like it would offer some feeding stations. Imanaged to spook the only fish we saw in the area while Kevinworked the next hole upstream. Two good fish were feedingactively int the top third. We took turns trying a wide variety of nymphs while watchingColoburiscus adults coming off the water and both fish continuingto feed. On my third turn, I got a take from a small brown neitherof us saw. I shot toward the bank and thrashed around briefly utilit threw the hook. The big fish failed to take any of our offeringsand we decided to continue on.The rest of the survey was spent looking at marginal holdingwater and not seeing another fish. There was a distinct lack ofgood feeding water with only one stretch that looked promising. We returned to the two big feeding fish for a last go before weheaded home. The fish again refused all our fakes andeventually spooked for no apparent reason. That was the laststraw and we gave it up as a lost cause for the day. By MichaelStevenson

Club Fishing Trip - 26th October 2018Club fishing trip for October organised by Richard Boyden was tocarry out a survey along the Upper Buller River betweenSpeargrass Creek and Kawatiri Junction. Purpose was toestablish fish numbers, fish locations, fishing beats, riverconditions and didymo. The Friday morning turned out to be a cold damp drizzly day butRichard’s sources assured him that it was a better day on theUpper Buller.Seven club members met up at the Fish and Game offices at08.00 where we divided into three teams. Richard, ————? and————? tasked to examine the lower section, Mike Stevensonand ——? the middle section with John Scoles and TrevorMcGowan the upper section as far as the Speargrass Creektributary.Three cars departed around 08.15 and went their seperate ways.John and Trevor went via St Arnaud, along the St ArnaudKawatiri Hwy for 9 km then turned right at the Lake StationAirport turn off road. At the end of this road, approx 800 m, weturned left through a gate and parked on the top terrace 500 mfrom the gate. An easy 350m stroll took us towhere the Buller River forks. The beat we carried out was from this point to where Speargrasscreek runs into the Buller – this would have been about 1.5 KMalong the left bank. The river flow was a lot more than expected. The mostnoticeable thing for us was the amount of didymo in the water.Having never come across didymo this bad before surprised usboth. When fishing we had a continuous problem with itattaching itself to the fly, where tippet, leader and line join - itwasn’t just in small amounts either. Cont.

On the 1.5km stretch of waterway walked we never sighted anyfish. This was compounded a little with the amount of didymoaround and poor lighting - plus also our experience level was notthat great. We were fishing blind for the whole time we spent onthe river.Another problem was the blackberry in the area. There wereareas up to 25m in length where we could not access the riverand detours had to be made. We carried our own secateurs buteven then it was impossible to cut our way through. For therecord, the electric fences keeping the cattle away from the riverbank were working, and are not on 12 volt either.:ContFrom our observations it looked like the right bank carried lessblackberry but because of the water flow and extremely slipperyrocky bottom due the didymo we felt it prudent not to attemptto cross to the the right bank.We were on location for around three hours. - weather wasovercast with periods of sun at times, very little wind from thewest.A very pleasant and enjoyable day - thanks RichardJohn Scoles / Trevor McGowan

To me this demonstrates a lack of interest/respectand reinforces my feeling that DoC has a negative attitude to fish and game. The manager is to liaise with DoC, and remind them of their statutory role.Possible controlled fishery on the Goulter River, due to fishing pressure, particularly from helicopter operators. Staffs are to be tasked to monitorusage and report back in time for a decision before next fishing season.cont

Good fish numbers reported in the Branch and Leathan fisheries. This reflectsthe success of fish releases. A staff visit, to Lake Daniels reports goodnumbers of rainbow trout in the lake and river.Chairman reports that Nelson Honey Ltd is open to negotiation about the tollon the rainbow Road for angling clubs.A presentation made by Pauline Webby, Policy planner, Natural Resources,Tasman District Council, about national environmental standards forplantation forestry and land disturbance rule review work. What concerns meabout this is the reliance by the Tasman District Council on self- regulation bythe forestry companies and lack of compliance staff within the TDC.Jean WillisCouncillor Gebhard & Finn showing how it’s done
