President’s ReportEaster weekend has come and gone and Anzac Day will soonarrive. I hope many of you had the chance to get in some fishingafter the storms faded. It was great to share a day at ArgylePond with several other members. Thanks to Jean Willis forencouraging the get together after the previous weekend waswashed out.I will be away from 22 to 30 April chatting up with my youngerbrother who will be holidaying in Hawaii. I plan to takeadvantage of the opportunity and spend my last full day truing tocatch bonefish on the fly. Now I have to get in plenty of practicewith my saltwater rod.We will have some interesting events at club meeting over thenext couple of months so keep an eye open for theannouncements. The committee has followed up on the concerns about the waittime for eating trout from area that have been subject to a 1080drop. We have drafted letter to the Fish and Game Councilhighlighting that current research does not support a withholdingperiod of only 7 days. Until there is more certainty, werecommend a withholding time of 1 month to be sure.Be safe on the water.. Michael Stevenson Fly’s Fate A gentleman loves to fish Hoping for a tasty dish With care he picks a fly Oh drat! the lure is dropped Chaqrined he searches wide To find last week's fly instead This he ties with knowing smile That fate oft decides What once was lost is later found To fool last week's fish This time around. Here is a chance to put pen to paper……MEMBERSGidday chaps – just a quick note to let you know the NMFGC FishCommittee meets in Havelock on May 29th – can you canvassyour members on what (if any), regulation changes they wouldlike to submit in writing to us between now and then for the fishcommittee to consider? From the staff end at this stage the only things we are currentlythinking about is whether there is scope to designate part of theRai/Spring creek fisheries as winter fisheries now we are doingregular rainbow releases into them, so it would be great to get aview on this option from the clubs also – we see it as anopportunity to increase angler opportunities for resident anglersover the winter, in a manner which will do no harm to the wildfishery now we are releasing hatchery fish into these waters asthis takes most of the harvest pressure off wild fish…….Any other written submissions on other suggestions welcomed, bearing in mind however there is a big push nationally to try andsimply/streamline Fish & Games complex regional regulationdifferences for the sake of anglers, so please keep this aspect inmind if any overly complex/complicated regulation suggestionsare being discussed by club members;)Rhys BarrierManagerNelson Marlborough Fish and Game

In brief, Andrew took a year off to fish in the UK, USA and NZ. He hasproduced a note on the NZ portion of his trip.\"My travels have now come to an end and I have decided to settle back inCape Town. So it is back to reality as I begin my job hunting, hopefully witha few fishing days on our Cape Streams before the season closes. Herewithare a few words and some photos from our fishing adventure around NewZealand's South Island. After six weeks of travelling around New Zealand's South Island, one canattest that it is truly a fly fishermen's El Dorado. The Kiwi's are true salt ofthe earth people, the rivers are mythical and the trout are as legendary asthe tales describe. As a fishermen, I never stopped learning, every river, every fish and every fellow angler had a lesson to share. My adventure took me from Christchurch, north to Mapua Bay, along theWest Coast and as far down south as Invercargill to explore the incrediblerivers and spring creeks of this fly fishing paradise.I was fortunate to experience all that the South Island has to offer fromblue skies, blank days, freshies, broken tippets, nor'wester's, license checks, sand flies (probably the most terrifying creature I have ever met) to themost memorable encounters with big brown trout. My only warning to those planning a visit to this magical place, prepareyourself for having to deal with a deep and extended episode of riversadness upon returning home that is not easily cured  \"To which may be added text from some emails from Andrew:\"Down in Reefton, had an amazing day fishing with Peter Baker and HansKreuer. I was fortunate to meet them at the Old Bread Shop backpackers inReefton. Great guys who let me tag along. That has to be the best fish of mylife, it fell for a double tungsten PT fished about 1.5m below a tinyindicator. We had a few hours on another river in the late afternoon withPeter taking a lively fish on a Caddis pupa imitation. Still smiling after thisbeauty ………..\"Thanks Andrew for letting us put this Article in our publication.

Report from the bimonthly meeting of the Nelson MarlboroughFish and Game Council meeting held 10th April 2018 inBlenheimThe Fish Committee is scheduled to meet in Havelock on the 30thMay. This committee considers the current fishing regulationsand makes recommendations to the council, to amend, delete orcreate regulations. The issue of banning triple hooks has beenraised for the committee’s consideration. Submission fromanglers are invitedProposals have been made to the National Council for PublicLiability insurance (Fire Fighting costs) being included in thelicense. For all licenses sold this would increase the cost of thelicense by $3, if opt in system was used it would add $20 to the

license. The consensus was little or no benefit to license holdersfor the additional cost.Branch River Power Scheme.Last November Trustpower advised the council about plansTrustpower had about mitigating the effect of the power schemeon the fishery.  They will work with Fish and Game on an expanded restocking program  Investigating options for stocking the Wiarau canal  Establish a trap and transfer program  Redesigning the fish pass to enable a trap and transferTrustpower have advised that the costs of the redesigned fishpass/trap have blown out and they want to look at other options. They have said there may be some merit in NM Fish and Gameproducing an alternative pathway for the future maintenance ofthe Branch Leatham fishery for Trustpowers consideration. : ContSo the saga continues, over 25 years to my memory, with no endin sight.A power point presentation of the damage caused by cycloneGita to the Motueka and Riwaka catchments was made by Fishand Game staff. The council expressed its concern about thedamage and wants to hold discussions with the forestrycompanies and the TDC about the effect of forestry operations.Concern was expressed about future access to Nelson Forestland, land that previously part of the NZ Forest Service estateand now is being sold. The Walking Access commission isinvolved and Fish and Game is being consulted. : Cont
