Vrydag 17 Desember 2021 11 UNFORTUNATELY, A DYING BREED… JIMMY HERBERT Continued from page 12 Retired lecturer: Stellenbosch University Andre Hartman, Allan Holten, Pierre Joubert, Dr. Allan (1977-2013) Kayle, Eric Lombard, Peter Leube, Italo Martinengo, Arthur Writer & Specialist in Maritime Ridge, Charlie Shapiro, Malcolm Turner and Captain Peter History and Archaeology Wilmot are but a few names that come to mind. By the mid-80’s almost all contributions to the world's knowledge of maritime archaeology came directly or indi- rectly from those mentioned above and the global wreck diving community. Even the two ships WASA (Sweden) and MARY ROSE (UK) that provided the world with a treasure trove of archaeology knowledge, were not discovered by archaeologists. Regrettably and incomprehensibly this trend basically persists to this day. Of all the many of arte- facts donated to and accepted by the Cape Town museums not one item that I know of is on display for the South Afri- can public to see and enjoy. No silver bars from the many recovered from the Joanna (1682) or even a display of the many Nicobar (1783) rare Swedish plate money cargo items already donated to the Cape Town museums in the 1980s. Not even one porcelain item from the well over 150,000 porcelain items lying on the Brederode (1785). It is sad that wreck divers are a dying breed for as with all other wrecks discovered along the South African coast these above mentioned three famous shipwrecks were also discovered by divers, and not archaeologists. 12 Vrydag 17 Desember 2021 History of the Overberg ...above and below the waves Jimmy Herbert UNFORTUNATELY, A DYING BREED… I was next to see the need and follow his example at my al- ma mater, Stellenbosch University. One a strategy to eventually stop the unscientific removal of such 'out of my field' good course that I attended at items from our coastal waters. Stellenbosch was archaeology. As the national underwater hockey coach (SA, Netherland At the time (1985-1988) the archaeology fraternity was then again SA) from the 90’s to 2012, I had to not only look getting increasingly anxious to stop any and all non- after the elite side but also guarantee continuity. Thus, while archaeological underwater excavations. Apart from natu- working on my team with the intention of getting them to rally trying to create and ensure work opportunities for ‘tidal wave’ status as the coach, I was wisely expected to themselves, their main reason put forward for this was the simultaneously put effort into the creating of a ‘next wave’ – potential and almost certain loss of maritime archaeology talented next generation. This invariably ensured not only information and data. It was logically stated that one short term success but also a continuous success. Deacon’s should not excavate a wreck just because its location was plan was also along these lines but, in his case, the effort was known or found. Rather such a project should only get the to stop the next wave from being created and enhanced and go ahead if there was a sound scientific need for it. in so doing allow this ‘breed of aquatic men and commercial salvors’ to die a natural death. Hilary came up with a brilliant long term plan: keep divers out of the limelight (newspapers, articles and museum dis- plays) while promoting archaeology and the correctly stated fact that, information and knowledge were more of a treas- ure than gold, silver and jewels, etc. This meant that chil- dren or young learners would never see or read about di- vers making significant discoveries. In this fashion the chain of \"I want to be like him or her\" would be broken. At the time I foolishly thought his plan was absurd but, today I can see, it worked.
