Half-cut cell technology Half-cut cell modules are made of cells that have been cut in half, resulting in a total of 108, 120, 132, 144 or 156 cells in a single module – doubling the total count in comparison to a traditional solar module. 16
Each half-cut cell produces the same voltage as a standard cell but only half the current, thus they are arranged in parallel strings (Fig 1) to mimic the voltage and current ratings of a conventional module. The most prominent benefit is the reduction in current per individual cell, lowering resistive losses, which results in a gain in power per square meter. Full Size Half-cut Size 17
Half-cut cell modules have three main benefits over conventional modules: 1. Lower Energy Losses By using half-cells, the electrical current (i) flowing in each busbar is halved. Therefore, the amount of internal losses in a half-cut module is 1/4 of a full-sized cell module. ENGINEERED IN SWITZERLAND Full Size Half-cut Size (Amount of electrical current) i 1/2 i Electrical Losses = Current2 x Resistance 2. Lower Shading Loss Shading loss of half-cell is improved compared to a regular module in a specific shading conditions. Full-cell Half-cell 0 power output +50% power output 18
3. Multi-Busbar Technology | Lower Microcrack Loss • Cell efficiency improved by 0.4% • Current transmission path reduced by 50% • Micro crack loss effectively reduced When a module is partially shaded, hot-spotting can occur as power is dissipated in the shaded cells. This can result in overheating of the shaded cells. Modules that utilize half-cut cells produce less current than that of a full cell, and this, in turn, helps to reduce the amount of dissipated power in the shaded cells – mitigating hotspot degradation. Full size Half-Cut size Benefits of using half-cut technology. Half-cut cell modules have proven to have higher power outputs per square meter than their full-cell counterparts. Similar to the comparison of PERC and Al-BSF cells, half-cut cells can potentially improve the payback time and the Levelized Cost of Electricity of a system that chooses to utilize this type of solar cell technology. Half-cut cells also have the additional benefit of being adaptive at sites where shading is 19 unavoidable. Half-cut cell modules oriented so that they experience “portrait shading” will see less power loss in comparison to similarly positioned modules that use traditional full cells.

Bifacial technology. What is the difference? Efficiency Efficiency is one of the main parameters of solar panels, which in standard conditions (immediately after assembly) is determined only by their design features. For mono facial modules, this parameter varies between 10-20%. The use of bifacial panels allows an increase up to 20-30% on average - their efficiency can reach 27%. Considering various other factors, which include weather conditions, these values can vary significantly from the given, both upward and downward. It should be noted that nowadays the efficiency criterion is no longer the decisive one. Today, the most successful modules on the market are those that can claim the best ratio between the total cost of their production and operation and the amount of energy generated during their lifetime. In other words, modules that produce the cheapest electric power. To calculate this ratio the LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy) indicator was developed. Given the importance of external factors and solar modules characteristics for the LCOE calculation, it is useful to compare these criteria. 31
ENGINEERED IN SWITZERLANDEIGER BIFACIAL series SWISS SOLAR AG launches EIGER BIFACIAL from 410 up to 590 Watt 10BB • BIFACIAL technology is the ability of solar cells or modules to convert light from both the front and the back into electrical energy. • Solar trackers are ideal for the bifacial solar module. Since there is enough free space under the solar modules, the sun's rays can freely reflect from the system and reach the back of the solar cell. • Now the number of solar double glass projects is growing rapidly. There is a growing understanding of how to design and build systems that harness the core strengths of the technology • Reduction of snow/wind loads on the roof • Space saving • Saving on steel structure installation • Savings in the use of cables • Shorter installation time 32
ENGINEERED IN SWITZERLANDPower The first most obvious advantage of bifacial modules in terms of power, all other variables being equal, is up to 25% gain in power due to the additional usage of reflected light to generate energy on the back side of the module. The cost of projects based on bifacial modules, with a given power and performance, will be lower than for mono facial modules due to the reduced number of modules required. Accordingly, fewer modules will require less space, which is quite important when the cost of land is high. Weight The use of a glass coating on both sides increases the weight of bifacial modules by an average of 5-8 kg compared to standard modules. This may make them a little more difficult to install, but it is not an obstacle during operation. The slight increase in the cost of installation work does not have a significant impact on the LCOE value. Longevity The life span of both mono facial and bifacial solar modules depends largely on the degradation rate of the photovoltaic cells used in them and is close to 30 years. However, we should not forget about the influence of natural factors. Here, bifacial modules have a clear advantage. The use of tempered glass to cover the front and back sides eliminates the negative effects of UV. Additionally, the transparent structure prevents excessive heating of the cells, which has a positive effect on longevity. The absence of an aluminium frame (for frameless modules) eliminates the risk of corrosion. In general, the increased resistance of bifacial modules to natural factors increases their service life. Mounting Features Unlike standard modules, projects using bifacial modules will require additional engineering calculations: · correct module placement, taking into account shading, row spacing, surface reflectivity, and height above ground level; · power generated by the backside of the module; · module inclination angle that will provide maximum efficiency for a given location; · power of inverter equipment. The practical application of the results of these calculations will certainly lead to higher module installation costs, affecting equipment costs and the overall cost of the project upward. However, the benefits of a significant increase in power generation far outweigh the magnitude of these costs and ultimately contribute to a reduction in LCOE. 34
Influence of natural factors In terms of efficiency and productivity, bifacial modules have an undisputed advantage over standard solar modules under adverse environmental conditions. They can provide sufficient energy generation even in low light (morning, evening) and scattered light conditions (fog, low cloudiness) thus enabling their usage in all climatic zones. Another advantage of bifacial modules compared to standard modules is the lower temperature of the cells. That feature provides minimal performance degradation during hot weather. In this case, sunlight passes freely through the transparent cell without heating it. In mono facial modules, the light hits the opaque backside and heats it, increasing the temperature of the cells. Use of tracking The first most obvious advantage of bifacial modules in terms of power, all other variables being equal, is up to 25% gain in power due to the additional usage of reflected light to generate energy on the back side of the module. The cost of projects based on bifacial modules, with a given power and performance, will be lower than for mono facial modules due to the reduced number of modules required. Accordingly, fewer modules will require less space, which is quite important when the cost of land is high. Design The use of a glass coating on both sides increases the weight of bifacial modules by an average of 5-8 kg compared to standard modules. This may make them a little more difficult to install, but it is not an obstacle during operation. The slight increase in the cost of installation work does not have a significant impact on the LCOE value. 35

Mechanical properties advantage ENGINEERED IN SWITZERLAND The diagram shows the structural difference between the two module types. Bifacial modules with transparent backsheet provide lightweight modules like traditional glass-backed laminates. The transparent backsheet improves internal reflection in a glass-to-cell-backsheet structure. They differ from Glass Glass modules in that the transparent backsheet modules use 3.2 mm thick tempered glass. The Glass modules have a glass thickness of 2 mm on each side of the module.
