hatter floated around the classroom on the twenty-first of May.Berker and classmates chittered about the day to finally end all days.
Mrs. Rico tapped chalk to board with ashimmy to her hips, and when she turned around, she told them this, “Now, Friday, as you know, is the last day ofschool, but before that will come, I have a presentfor you.”
Berker loved presents. (He really, really did.)But, nothing could be more exciting than seventy- six days of snow cones, swimming, soccer, and sweet, sweet, freedom.
They peeked at the board.( )You w i l l present this to the c l a s s ! GO AHEAD AND START NOW
Psst, writing was easy. Writing hecould do. Just yesterday he and his budMichael wrote a note to his sister.
Berker sat and he thought of all the thingshe liked.
When he finally picked up his pencil, none of those things would write.
Everyone worked fast around him. One row over, theBaymont twins argue over who could write about alligators. “No, I’m going to,” Madison screamed in her brother’s face. Mason huffed red and quietly, he said, “no, it’s me.”
“Well, we’re writing about Ballerinas,” Elianapointed to the empty chair between her and Mason.
Oh no, he had… the Block
Alba even lent him herfavorite book for inspiration
…but, no luck.He trudged home that day with only thoughts of sadness and badness.
He schooled his brother in baseball, challenged his best friends to a soccer duel,
and spent forty extra minutes walking Blackshear,
He ev
ven listened to his mom reread Alba’s book. (He did. He really really really listened.)
Just before bed, his dad
He slept…
And slept…
and slept, until exhaustion…
faded into…
dreams
Berker crept back into the house.
Throwing himself onto hisdesk, he grabbed paper, and just like Miss Rico said, the…words...flowed…
He felt like Hudson, scribbling faster to the of his pencil.

Meet The Author Minna is currently a student at Georgia Southern University, where she is a writing major in her last year. Berker’s Got the Block is her attempt to uncover the mysteries of how and why we write. She lives with her one roommate and doesn’t have any pets.
