The Area VII Shetland Pony & Miniature Horse Association, Inc., was incorporated on June 14, 1998 by the Board of Directors: President Marjorie Vliet, Director Virginia Flint and Director Jim Curry. It is and has always been member supported and driven, with a dynamic group of people volunteering to run the club. Area VII is an American Shetland Pony Club/American Miniature Horse Registry/American Show Pony Registry (ASPC/AMHR/ASPR) registered and recognized club that is primarily ac- tive in California, though our area encompasses California, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii. Our membership includes owners of both ASPC Shetlands and AMHR Miniature Horses. Area VII welcomes members from all over—and you do not need to own a mini or pony to join. Area VII’s membership is spread across California and Nevada at this time, with members of all ages, with varied backgrounds and interests. Area VII is primarily a club for those that enjoy their Shetlands and Miniatures, with a particular interest in showing. “We are an informal group of people of all ages who gather together for the enjoyment of friendships made, and the promotion of our beautiful equine. As members of this organization, we help maintain the recognition that our fine Shetlands and Miniatures deserve at the ASPC/AMHR level.” Cover design by Melissa Berschens, Silver Buckle Services

From the President Dear Members, My president’s message is filled with both joy and sorrow with the passing of my beloved sister, Rebecca Keyes. “Becky,” “Becca,” or “Bec Bec,” as she was called, was a kindred spirit in my life. On the morning of February 13, 2019, we made the painful, but very nec- essary decision to take my sister off life support. Having developed typically for the first two years of her life, Becky began experiencing seizures and began regressing cognitively, ultimately losing her ability to speak. Despite our best efforts to provide her with a better quality of life, the family was ill-equipped to deal with the challenges she presented behaviorally and for those she faced daily. She resided in a series of group homes from the time she was ten years-old, a prospect that invoked much guilt into our family. About fifteen years ago, she was placed into a group home in Elk Grove, CA, whose staff dedicated themselves to helping Becky. I’d like to say that Becky was happy there, and that our family was pleased at her progress. Indeed, we were now able to take her places without worrying whether or not Becky would throw a tantrum, dishes, or her food! After marrying Richard Erickson and forming Double E Ranch, my sister loved to come over and pet the horses. She and Richard developed a very loving relationship that touched me to no end, particularly when she pulled his beard! That was a sign of affec- tion for those who knew her. Becky enjoyed feeding the horses and filling up their water buckets especially, as she had a fixation with water. It gave her great pleasure to see the water descending into the bucket! Sadly, she choked while eating her dinner one night, and the paramedics did not get there in time to prevent oxygen loss to her brain. She suffered global brain damage and lay in a coma. When we saw her, my first thought was “my sister is dead.” After nearly a week in the ICU, my beloved sister breathed her last. She was as beautiful in her death as she was in life. Becky went peacefully, and the family worked quickly (my brother flew in from Israel to assist with the funeral arrangements) to provide her with a proper Jewish burial. For those of you who do not know, the custom states that the body must be buried within twenty-four hours if possible. Somehow, we succeeded in getting her down to Orange County in time to rest alongside my brother. In spite of our sorrow, my family is relieved that Becky is at last at peace and looking down on us with love and pride. Rebecca is now in heaven with a perfect body—restored fully by her creator. Your President, Jacob Elliott Page 6 Spring 2019

The End of an Era Looking at the collection of Area VII quarterly news- letters sitting on my shelf, I see that the first issue I produced was the July, August, September 2007 issue. Shetland Pony & Miniature Horse Assoc., Inc. Newsletter • July, August, September 2007 That was almost 12 years ago! It is with some regret that I have decided that this issue is my last. Getting content has always been a challenge, but in the end people would come through with some ranch news and some advertising. There was a time when each issue was between 16–24 pages and always had a cou- ple of ads to help offset the printing and mailing costs. However, those days are over. I think the major contributing factor is social media, specifically Facebook. People post their news and keep up with what’s happening through social media, so they don’t feel compelled to make the effort to contribute to the newsletter. I get that, I really do. So I think the time has come to My first issue. move on. This newsletter is time-consuming to put together and expensive to print and mail. It has so little real content these days, most of which easily can be found online—on Facebook or our website—so I don’t feel that it’s worth the time and expense any longer. We have a website and a Facebook group, and we will create a Facebook page for the club that will be updated regularly. I think that these will be more effective as a means of communication than a quarterly newsletter. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has contributed over the years. Whisper Equestrian Center News Hi all, sorry we dropped off the face of the earth, but the holidays and the beginning of 2019 had us running. Nothing bad, just swamped. We are looking forward to a productive and pony-filled 2019. We are expecting a few foals and with a few 2018 pony rescues we are a bit over crowded and are offering sev- eral top-quality Shetlands for a fuzzy wuzzy sale. They are all warm and dry and happy but very furry, and this is not the time of year to body clip. This is your chance to pur- chase that pony of your dreams at a reasonable price. We have been enjoying the rain, but we are definitely looking forward to spring. With all this nice water we are sure to have a bumper crop of weeds to mow when it dries out. 2019 is the final year for my service on the ASPC/AMHR Board of Directors. To my knowledge, no one has stepped up to fill that position, but there is still time to get your application in to the office. It has been my pleasure to serve Area VII and the general membership and I will miss it, but it is time to move on. Whisper’s Special Edition received his Hall of Fame in Classic Halter at the 2018 ASPC/ AMHR convention in Omaha, and now we are looking forward to figuring out who is our next show pony or ponies. It is hard to choose from so many great candidates. I am so lucky to have to choose. We are sad to announce the end of the Santa Cruz County Pony Show in September. We just did not have the entries although we always had fun. If anyone wants to continue with that show I am sure I can hand it over to you, but for me and my family it will be the end of a 20+ year pony fair commitment.
