Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is an Adult Foster Care / Assisted Living Facility?There are several types of licensed facilities that care for the needs ofthe elderly and/or handicapped. These facilities are licensed by the Stateof Michigan and can have as few as one resident in a home or up to 20residents. Most homes are somewhere in between. All home, regardlessof size, are staffed with caregiver(s) on a 24-hour basis.What services are provided in Licensed Adult Foster Care/Assisted LivingHomes?Services provided can vary by home and typically include, but are notlimited to:• 24-hour personalized care• Meal preparation-special diet included• Assistance with personal care• Assistance with daily living, such as laundry and housekeeping• Health monitoring and medication administration• Transportation services• Social and recreational activitiesWhat is the difference between Adult Foster Care Homes / AssistedLiving, Independent Senior Living / Retirement Homes, Skilled NursingHomes?The difference is the level of care that is provided. The general rule fol-lows the natural progression of aging, disease or disability. In an unli-censed setting, Independent Senior Living / Retirement Homes providerooms or apartments with extra services such as meals, laundry, house-keeping, for purchase as needed. Adult Foster Care / Licensed AssistedLiving Homes are licensed facilities that provide the next level of care,adding supervision, health and medication monitoring within a home likesetting. Skilled Nursing Homes provide all levels of skilled medical care.How much does it cost and will insurance cover any of it?Like most things, the cost will vary depending on the amount and natureof the care provided. In an Adult Foster Care Home, some individuals mayqualify for assistance with paying for all or part of it. Most Assisted LivingHomes are private pay, but may accept Medicaid, Veteran’s Assistance,or LTC Insurance.
