The Hole 1 COURSENO. 1: PAR 4, 348 YARDSThe ideal line of play off the tee is the left center of the fairway due to the slight dogleg right. Some players may elect tolay back, leaving a full shot from a flat lie rather than half shot from a downhill lie. Water in the front and on the rightside guards the green. If the alternative tee is used during the championship, it will add almost 50 yards to the drive andcreate more of a dogleg.56

Hole 2NO. 2: PAR 5, 515 YARDSA long drive on the left side creates opportunity to reach the green, but beware of out of bounds on both sides and acreek on the right side within the driving area. The green is guarded by a lake on the left side with a slope toward thelake. Players who elect to lay up must use care since the creek crosses the fairway roughly 110 yards short of the green. The Course continued on page 60 Big Canyon Country Club 59

Hole 3NO. 3: PAR 3, 157 YARDSThis slightly downhill par 3 plays longer because of the prevailing wind. The well-bunkered green is complex andrequires the shot be hit properly. It is best to avoid being above the hole. The lake in the front of the hole rarely comesinto play but adds to the beauty of the hole. Hole 4NO. 4: PAR 4, 382 YARDSThis straightaway par 4 requires some finesse. A left-center drive opens the elevated green, which is protected by largebunkers on both sides. However, trees and out of bounds are on both sides of the fairway. There are fairway bunkers onthe left and a water hazard on the right.60 The Course continued on page 63

Hole 5NO. 5: PAR 4, 358 YARDSDon’t let the shorter distance give you false confidence. This is a tough hole with the dogleg left requiring a short driveleft of the fairway bunker on the right. The green is again well-bunkered and requires an approach shot that is below thehole, as anything above the hole is extremely challenging.John Cook - FAVORITE HOLE: NO. 5“One of the great short par fours the players will encounter. Short by yardage but you better payattention or this dogleg left will bite. Decision off the tee: drive it around the corner or play a shot tothe widest part of the fairway short of the bunkers on the right. Uphill second shot plays longer thanyardage. Players must know the hole location and spin control is a must! Any approach missed to theleft will present a difficult up and down. Any putt from above the hole to any hole location is speedyso if you miss, bring your coin!”“Take your four here and head up to the next tee.”The Course continued on page 64 Big Canyon Country Club 63

Hole 6NO. 6: PAR 5, 531 YARDSThis is a difficult par 5 which is rarely reached in two shots. While trees, out of bounds and bunkers guard the right sideof the driving area, a drive too far left is problematic. The approach shot typically plays longer. The green will punish theplayer if the ball finishes above the hole. Hole 7NO. 7:PAR 3,189 YARDSThis hole usuallyplays into theprevailing oceanbreeze, whichadds length. Thelarge bunkerguarding the frontof the green isvery unforgiving. The green isbisected by aswale whichdictates carefulplacement of theshot to the green.64 The Course continued on page 67

Hole 8NO. 8: PAR 4, 464 YARDSThe driving area of this long par 4 is protected by bunkers on both sides. The center cut is the line of play. The approachshot, although downhill, is usually played into prevailing wind and the green is surrounded by bunkers. If the green ismissed, getting up and down is a true challenge. The Course continued on page 68 Big Canyon Country Club 67

Hole 9 NO. 9: PAR 4, 391 YARDS The drive must be hit just left of or short of the fairway bunker. Water in the front and on the right side guards the green. The left side of the green is protected by a large bunker that reaches almost to the front of the green, which slopes towards the water. This hole demands a precise approach shot. Natalie Gulbis - FAVORITE HOLE: NO. 9 “My favorite hole is No. 9. I have always enjoyed holes that make you contemplate the clubs you will hit off the tee. When the pin is left on the challenging 9th, a shorter 3 wood or less tee shot to the widest part of the fairway is ideal. When the pin is set to the back right a more aggressive tee shot is considered. I also love that the second shot demands precision – a long shot to avoid the water on either pin placement finds a golfer in a tough up and down position from the back bunker or in the rough with a chip that can roll into the water. The hole definitely challenges you mentally. I love that the incredible clubhouse is the backdrop for the hole. But my favorite part of the hole is the pressure of knowing that every person who is on the terrace dining, relaxing outside, or in a meeting, is watching your approach and putt.” “Knowing that your friends could later remind you of your performance on the 9th always adds some extra excitement!”68

Ai Miyazato Big Canyon Country Club 69 FAVORITE HOLE: NO. 9 “My favorite hole at Big Canyon is No. 9. It is very challenging as you must hit your tee shot on the right side of the fairway or you will not be able to see the green.” “There is not an easy pin placement on the green!”The Course continued on page 71

70

Hole 10NO. 10: PAR 4,409 YARDSThis hole plays uphill, making it far longerthan the yardage. Adrive to the left of thefairway bunker is theideal line. The green isextremely complex,well-bunkered andgenerally slopes fromback to front. Avoidthe bunker guardingthe right front of thegreen and try to staybelow the hole. Bob Lovejoy - FAVORITE HOLE: NO. 10 “One of the most challenging holes on the course is the 10th hole. The 10th hole requires a well-hit tee shot that shortens the hole by playing down the left side or for the long hitters over the left corner. Shots that slide to the right, even if in the middle of the fairway, will leave the player with a long shot to a well-protected green. Players who are able to cut the corner or hit their tee shot down the very left side of the fairway will be left with a mid-iron or short iron into the green. Hitting the green still provides a challenge to the player. With several significant undulations in the green a player could have a very difficult putting experience.” “This is not only a challenging hole but also one that is very attractive to a golfer’s eye.”Hole Descriptions continued on page 72 Big Canyon Country Club 71

Hole 11NO. 11: PAR 4, 414 YARDSThe driving area is pinched by trees on the left and bunkers on the right. The hole generally plays downwind. The greenis guarded by deep bunkers in front and to the left of the green. Balls hit to the center of the green will tend to worktheir way left.72

Hole 12NO. 12: PAR 3, 179 YARDSThe prevailing breeze usually assists in carrying the ball to a wide but shallow green. Very deep bunkers on each side ofthe green guard the putting surface. A ball long on the left will end up in the collection area and a ball long on the rightwill end up in the back bunker. Any shot that misses this green results in a difficult recovery.'JEFMJUZ/BUJPOBM5JUMF DPOHSBUVMBUFT 644FOJPS \"NBUFVSBMMUIFRVBMJöFSTPGUIF644FOJPS\"NBUFVS $IBNQJPOTIJQ 4FSWJDJOH:PVS$PNNFSDJBM5SBOTBDUJPOT/BUJPOXJEF Big Canyon Country Club 73 tXXXGOUNBKPSBDDPVOUTDPNThe Course continued on page 74

Hole 13NO. 13: PAR 4, 393 YARDSThe tee shot plays into a rising fairway with bunkers guarding both sides of the landing area. The approach shot is to anelevated green where the putting surface and some of the bunkers are not visible from the fairway. It is best to staybelow the hole on this green. Hole 14NO. 14: PAR 4, 387 YARDSThe driving area is restricted by trees on the left and bunkers on the right. Many players will elect to lay up short of thebunkers; however some may choose to thread the needle between the trees and bunkers. Bunkers surround the green andthere is a lot of movement on the putting surface. Going over the back of the green is treacherous. The Course continued on page 77 Big Canyon Country Club 75

76

Hole 15NO. 15: Big Canyon Country Club 77PAR 3,182 YARDSIf you like long par 3s,this is your hole. Playersmust avoid the bunkerson both sides of thegreen, in addition toclearing the lake. Thegreen is fairly large buthas severe breaks. Partof the challenge of thetee shot is that theteeing grounds aresomewhat shelteredfrom the winds. Thishole generally playslonger, especially in theafternoon because ofthe breeze. The Course continued on page 78

Hole 16NO. 16: PAR 5, 551 YARDSThis is a punishing par 5 that doglegs to the right. The tee shot must avoid trees on both sides of the landing area but belong enough to clear the trees at the elbow of the dogleg. The second shot is uphill with fairway bunkers and plays intoa prevailing breeze which requires at least one extra club. The contours of the green do not make it easy to get the ballclose.78

Hole 17Ray Carrasco Fred CouplesFAVORITE HOLE: NO. 17 FAVORITE HOLE: NO. 17“It is critical to put the ball in play on the drive in order to have a decent “The 17th hole is my favorite as it is achance for a respectable score on the beautiful and challenging 17th hole. challenge tee through green. On the teeThe daunting green framed by bright white bunkers makes club and target there is OB left and heavy trees right. Theselection critical! Only a well-struck iron will be accepted onto the putting approach shot always plays longer withsurface. The green always befuddles visual reasoning. A two-putt is a the afternoon wind and you must clearprayer if below the hole. A chip or pitch from below the hole is the safe two deep-faced bunkers to hit the green, way to go.” and then the green has multiple difficult positions.”“Par on this hole is golden - always!” “Good luck.”NO. 17: PAR 4, 404 YARDSThis hole is usually played into a prevailing wind. The fairway tends to work the ball to the right, so the left side of thefairway is generally preferred. Very long hitters must be careful they do not hit the ball over the green, which issurrounded by challenging bunkers. The approach shot and the putting surface may be the most difficult on the course. The Course continued on page 81 Big Canyon Country Club 79

Hole 18NO. 18: PAR 5, 516 YARDSThis finishing hole is a dogleg right with bunkers at the end of the landing area. For players willing to risk cutting thedogleg, the hole can be reached in two shots; however the approach to the green is fronted by a lake with bunkersbehind the green. It is a definite risk-reward hole with the potential to pick up a shot or two, or pay the price if theapproach is not executed properly. If laying up, the favored angle to the green is from the left side of the fairway as thebWall tends to roll to the right near the green.WorldWide GOLF & TRAVEL, INC.
