Our School Day At WAVA, you have flexibility. You can attend live classes from the comfort of your sofa or while hanging out in your grandmother’s backyard. Each student’s live class schedule may look different depending on his/her/their needs. WAVA teachers and staff are available from 8:00 to 4:00 (Monday through Friday) to help you. Your schedule can be found in our online school on the schedule page. WAVA students are expected to attend assigned Class Connect sessions. The keys to success in live sessions are: • Be There • Be On Time • Be Prepared • Be Engaged • Be Respectful It is important to understand that Washington State law requires WAVA students to have reciprocal (two-way) interactions with their teacher each week. Our School Day Cont. Much of your work at WAVA will be completed asynchronously (not live). For you, that might be early in the morning before gymnastics. For others, they may find they do their best work after dinner. All WAVA students should expect to spend a minimum of 30 hours per week (1080 hour per school year) working in their course content, which will often include time with a certificated and highly-qualified teacher. If there are days that you cannot attend class or work in your courses, please contact your teacher. Our teachers are committed to developing a Written Student Learning Plan for each student, and staying connected with your teacher will help you remain successful at WAVA. At WAVA, we plan for success. If you need support in setting up your school day, be sure to reach out to your advisor or teacher. Attendance is required at WAVA. COMPANY 13 CONFIDENTIAL
Our Supports WAVA offers a variety of supports for students and families. There are two main points of contact for a student. The teacher is the point of contact for assignments, content questions, as well as all things academic. The advisor is a great resource for time management, best practices, site navigation, and more! You also have the support of the Operations Team, which encompasses your friendly Registration and Enrollment crew. Their primary role is to help you obtain and submit all necessary documents so that you can remain enrolled at WAVA. You can reach out for transcripts and school records. We support students in moving toward independent learning and appropriate behavior. While participating in any school-sponsored event or outing, WAVA students are subject to the student discipline policies of the Omak School District. COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL 14
Our Supports Cont. We expect students to act responsibly. The WAVA community reinforces positive behaviors and recognizes improvement. Our school provides opportunities for students to be involved and contribute to community. We help students develop responsibility for their own behavior and treat everyone with respect. At WAVA, we expect appropriate behavior. Communications or postings that harass or intimidate students or teachers or disrupt any online classes are considered unacceptable in the Omak School District. It is a parent’s responsibility to monitor behavior during all school activities. WAVA staff responds to all inappropriate language or behavior, and students will receive consequences in accordance with the Omak School District policy. Each situation is different and will be addressed appropriately by school staff. For common discipline issues, steps will be taken to promote positive decision-making, re-teach expectations, andCOMPANY 15 encourage positive behaviors. CONFIDENTIAL
Academic Success WAVA is proud of the way that our students and staff come together to demonstrate their learning. Most students at WAVA will be scheduled to complete in-person state standardized assessments each spring. This is a state requirement for all public-school ALE program students. We make sure there are local testing sites all around the state. Most students travel less than 30 minutes to reach their nearest test site. In less populated areas, you may have to travel up to an hour to reach your site. Our testing sites are staffed by WAVA teachers and school support staff. We look forward to connecting with our students in person. WAVA students are required to participate in all state and locally- mandated assessments. Academic Success Cont. At WAVA we believe that all students can be successful both academically and socially. Whether you are in class, a club, lunch chat, small group, or working asynchronously on your daily work, it is important that you have the tools and supports you need to be successful. Our principals work with teachers to use the most impactful instructional strategies and methods to help all students grow and learn. WAVA offers full-time learning for Kindergarten to 5th Grade students with K12 curriculum in English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and more. Teachers provide a combination of live classes, help sessions, and asynchronous learning to support students and families. Learners are expected to attend assigned classes to gain content knowledge and get to know their #PodSquad. At WAVA MS, you can expect well-prepared class connect sessions, innovative teaching, tremendous student resources, and incredible opportunities to learn and grow. We offer PE and Health classes as well as opportunities for you to get a jump-start in preparedness for high school. Academic Success Cont. WAVA includes a comprehensive high school with the credits and pathways you need in order to graduate career and college ready in Washington. With passing grades and regular communication with your counselor, advisor, and teachers, you will be well on your way to success. It is expected that WAVA HS students utilize the Grad Planning tool, our High School & Beyond Plan, as well as Tallo. Report cards are issued in January and June of each year. Report cards are based on progress, accuracy, and timeliness. The WAVA-Omak grading policy addresses grade scales, late work policy, grade appeal policy, and extra-curricular club eligibility. Pathways Washington Virtual Academies is proud to offer a variety of pathways to meet your needs. WAVA Flex offers students the opportunity to set their own learning structures and schedules. In Flex, students will be expected to work through curriculum and check in with teachers as required. Teachers will be available to provide support to the student via email, phone, text, live meetings, etc. as needed. WAVA High School students have the option to take classes that will earn them both high school credit and college credit (Dual Credit Classes). We have many students that are enrolled in Running Start, a state program that allows students to attend WA state colleges/universities and earn both high school and college credit, for FREE! Students interested in pursuing careers in technology, business, or health sciences will find our CTE course sequence a great opportunity to earn industry experience while meeting graduation pathways! Special Programs Washington Virtual Academies will conduct activities to identify students’ primary language and provide a Transitional Bilingual Instructional Program or alternative instructional program to eligible students (WAC 392-160). Washington Virtual Academies will solicit referrals for the identification of Highly Capable students based on data or evidence from teachers, other staff, parents, students, and members of the community and will prioritize equitable identification of low-income students. Students identified as a Highly Capable will be provided educational opportunities which consider student's unique needs and capabilities (WAC 392-170). Washington Virtual Academies will support all students by providing supplemental English language arts or mathematics instruction. (WAC 392-162). COMPANY 21 CONFIDENTIAL
Special Programs Cont. Washington Virtual Academies will conduct Child Find activities to reach all students with a suspected disability for the purpose of locating, evaluating and identifying students who need Special Education and related services, regardless of the severity of their disability (WAC 392- 172A). Washington Virtual Academies will provide students who are eligible for Special Education or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 with FAPE, a free and appropriate public education (WAC 392-172A and WAC 392-700). For a full explanation of the rights available parents/guardians of students eligible for or referred for special education, please refer to the notice of Procedural Safeguards. Student Support Services Team The goal of the Student Support Services team is to provide holistic support to all WAVA community members. The team consists of advisors, social workers, and more. Look for supports from the team that include: • Orientation • Week of Welcome • Q&A Sessions • Open Office Hours • Social Sessions (Chill & Chat) • 1:1 Support Appointments WAVA’s School Resource Coordinator is here for students who may be experiencing a loss in housing or need assistance with technology acquisition. They also connect families with various community services. The SRC’s collaboration with advisors, counselors, teachers, and principals ensures that students have all they need to remain successful. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) At WAVA we believe that school is about more than just academic learning. It is about supporting the whole student as they journey through their K-12 school career. Because of this belief, we have adopted a research-based curriculum to help guide administrators, teachers, counselors and the greater WAVA community in their support of each student. 7 Mindsets is a comprehensive blueprint for happiness, intentionality, and success, written in simple, powerful language to teach and activate success strategies for people to live the lives of their dreams. Each month, we will focus a different mindset and the actions you can take to instill this mindset in your life. In addition to our adoption of the 7 Mindset curriculum, WAVA has school counselors in each of our grade bands (K-5, 6-8 and 9-12) that are dedicated to supporting students in the classroom, small groups, one-on-one sessions, and through connections to greater community resources and supports. Our counselors support students socially, emotionally and academically. Student Conferences At WAVA we are a team! It is important that we meet with our team to celebrate our successes and identify needed supports. These meetings are often called student-teacher conferences, and they should happen monthly. The most effective conferences involve the student, teacher, and the learning coach as active participants in the conversation. Together, we identify strengths and areas of growth and collaboratively select strategies that will support progress. Student-teacher conferences should increase a learner’s motivation and lead to higher achievement both academically and socially. Our Culture Parent Advisory Council The WAVA Parent Advisory Council, PAC, is an opportunity for parents to support our WAVA Community. PAC will have representatives from each grade band that will connect and meet to support the school’s mission and vision. PAC supports developing partnerships between schools, families, and communities. If you are interested in serving on the Parent Advisory Council, please reach out to your Principal. Student Leadership We want students to take active roles in their education and develop positive skills in the process. Student leaders create a culture of ownership, collaboration, and community in the classroom. At WAVA our students will have the opportunity for leadership in classroom activities, clubs, events, and through our Student Leadership Group.
