T&E News V. 50 Issue 3 March 2015 P 51 scope of aftermarket modifica- tions. Engine and suspension characteristics were specifically developed for off-road competi- tion with an 18 inch rear wheel connecting it all to the terrain. At first glance, the FX looks very much like the YZ, with the centerpiece being the rearward slanted DOHC 250cc power- plant, utilizing four titanium valves. Reversing the cylin- der head provides direct and unobstructed aspiration from the front of the cylinder and allows for relocating the air box and filter behind the handle- bars, minimizing exposure to water and mud. The fuel tank is located below the seat, and coupled with the rear-exiting wraparound exhaust, this com- bination further compliments the theme of “mass centraliza- tion”. The differences between the YZ and FX reveal themselves on the ride. Firing up the YZ250FX is push-button easy as it rests on a completely functional yet lightweight aluminum kick- stand. Throttle response is ul- tra-crisp with the Keihin 44mm throttle body providing optimal fuel atomization from idle to the near 13,000 rev limiter. The stock silencer is for closed-course use only, so we installed a GYTR/FMF Powercore 4 slip-on exhaust that aestheti- cally looks great, saves a little weight, and includes a spark arrestor to expand our rid- ing options. Additionally, we mounted an Enduro Engineer-

T&E News P 52 ing skid plate that bolts on and off in just a couple of minutes, which means clean and quick oil changes in addition to stellar good looks and full protection for side cases and water pump. Out on the trail, the YZ250FX is exactly what I’ve been try- ing to build all of these years. The available torque is simply impressive and easily closes any gaps and compromises typically associated with a wide-ratio transmission. Lofting the front wheel over roots and rocks is a flick of the clutch away, and from a power-delivery perspec- tive, the FX feels like its cylinder is displacing more than 250cc’s. Top-end speeds in excess of 80mph are attainable with stock gearing, while still being able to provide mountain goat maneu- verability and traction in first gear. But the story gets better, especially for trials riders, as the handling and precision of the overall chassis rivals that of the enduro bikes built by our favorite trials manufacturers. The forward and aft balance is very neutral, allowing the rider to steer with the rear wheel in fast and flowing sections, while not compromising any of the front-end precision necessary for picking a narrow trials line through rocky and technical terrain. Trials riders will also welcome the redesigned clutch. Yamaha engineered the YZ250FX with a revised cable lever ratio, new friction plates, softer springs,

T&E News P 82Cody’s Webb A column by 2010 MotoTrial Champ and 2014 EnduroCross Champ Cody Webb Well it feels like it has been a while since my last update. If you remember, it was my dad, Kip, who wrote my last article sharing a look of my life from the outside. It’s my turn to update you guys about what’s going on in my life now. I’ve been busier than ever racing the FIM SuperEnduro series with my new team and beginning a good relationship with all my new sponsors. I had a great four years with Beta and won the Endurcross championship with them in 2014, so it was the best way for me to end my relationship with them. Now as a rider on the RPM Racing Team, it has been a small learning process, but we are on a roll now. I’ve had a lot of people ask me the difference between the Beta and KTM and even though they’re similar Eurostyle, there really is a big difference between the two. The Beta with its trials background is perfect for nasty, slick single track riding with a soft bottom end that acts like a tractor. The
