T&E News V. 50 Issue 6 June 2015 P 61 gal’s combination of long and Antone Meo physically demanding special tests, unrelenting terrain and Laia Sanz searing heat ensured that the third round of the series was not for the faint hearted. In the Enduro 3 class it was Matt Phillips who came out on top to secure his second vic- tory of the weekend, putting himself firmly back into the title chase. Leading the way for most of the day, Phillips overcame a small issue on the final two tests to win the day by one-second from Sherco’s Matti Seistola (FIN). “It feels great to win both days,” told Phillips. “I felt good all day but on the final enduro test I overcooked the rear brake and nearly threw the win away. It was a close margin of victory but a win’s a win. I’m happy.” Pushing hard to capitalise on PHILLIPS’ mistake, Seistola gave it everything in the final two tests but agonisingly came just one second short of victory. The battle for the final step of the podium was equally as close as the fight for the win. Edging out Husqvarna’s Mathias Bellino (F) by one second, TM’s Aigar Leok (EST) secured third. With Bellino fourth, Thomas Oldrati (I-Husqvarna) placed just nine seconds behind in fifth. There was no stopping Chris- tophe Nambotin on day two in Portugal. Winning all but two of the day’s 10 special tests, the KTM rider claimed a command- ing 50-second win. “What can I say, it’s been a perfect day,” commented Nambotin. “My

I’m more than happy with this result.” As the only other rider to claim a special test win in E1, TM’s Eero REMES (FIN) ended his day as runner-up to NAMBOTIN. Improving greatly over his previous day’s result, Husqvarna’s Danny McCan- ney (GB) placed a strong third. Sherco’s Lorenzo Santolino (S) was fourth with Yamaha’s Cris- tobal Guerrero (S) completing the top five. The Enduro 2 class saw KTM’s Antoine Meo (F) return to the top step of the podium to record his fifth win of the series. It was a close victory for the Frenchman – beating championship rival Pela Renet (F-Husqvarna) by 11 seconds. The fight for the runner-up result was even closer as Renet hung on to beat day one winner Alex Salvini (I-Honda) by just three tenths of a second. “The battle was really close today,” said MEO. “Alex, Pela and myself were constantly fighting for the win. I managed to pull a little gap but it was not enough to allow me to relax until the final test was over. It’s been a great fight.” In contention with the leaders early on, Spain’s Jaume Betriu (Husqvarna) eventually dropped back as the pace increased to take fourth. Sherco’s Loic Larrieu (F) completed the top five. - www.fIM-Live.com.

T&E News P 68Bou AgainPhotos Courtesy FIM/G2F Media Toni Bou FIM World Trials C’Ship Round 2 May 30-31, 2015 Sokolov, Czech Republic Repsol Honda’s Toni Bou remains unbeaten in the 2015 FIM Trial World Championship as he claimed his four win in a row at the GP of the Czech Republic held at the new venue of So- kolov. In the World Pro general standing Bou now leads Raga by eighteen points following his utter domination of the opening two GPs of the 2015 season. DAY ONE Bou had to come from behind on Day One of the Czech Repub- lic GP, as he trailed surprise lap- one leader James Dabill on the factory Vertigo. Dabill remained in close contention until the last lap before eventually slipping to fifth spot. In contrast it was Gas Gas factory rider Adam Raga and Sherco’s Albert Cabestany who had to hold and climb the order respectively to take second and third positions at the finish. The twelve sections, all which were located in a heavily wood- ed area near to the picturesque lake area that formed the pad- dock received a soaking over-

There was littlevariety on offer with steep looseclimbs which were infested withslippery boulders and exposedtree roots in places, with thechanging conditions forcingthe organizers to effect latechanges to the course to offsetjust how slippery the going hadbecome due to the rain. Bou’s nervous dab in theopening section of the day setthe scene for a first lap thatincluded three fives and twotime penalties to put him threemarks behind Dabill after theinitial tour of three, which alltook place under dry skies.Cabestany slotted into thirdspot another three marks back, whilst Raga could count him-self unlucky to be back in fifthat that stage behind eventualfourth place finisher, Jaime Bus-to – Repsol Honda, after he wascruelly awarded a five in sectionfive after what was deemed amomentary stop. Toni was back in front by laptwo as he completed his secondtour for just seven. This amaz-ing performance put him eightclear of Dabill at this stage asthe British rider looked good

T&E News P 70 Takahisa Fujinami for a podium finish at least. However Raga, Cabestany and Busto were to all overhaul the Vertigo come the finish as Dabill suffered a hellish last lap. With the eventual podium packed with familiar faces, again it was seventeen-year-old Busto who was one of the main talking points as he claimed a career best fourth position at only his second GP in the World Pro class. DAY TWO With just two rounds of the 2015 FIM Trial World Champion- ship completed, Bou already has a stranglehold on the series as he sealed his fourth successive victory, this time on day two of the Czech Republic Grand Prix. For the second day on the bounce, Bou had to overcome an opening lap deficit to fight his way back to the front before running out a relatively com- fortable winner come Sunday afternoon. Raga pushed the reigning champion hard, but eventually ended the day six marks shy of his dominant com- patriot. This time Jeroni Fajardo (Beta), who had led on lap one, took third spot to make it the second all-Spanish rostrum of the weekend. On a day when blue skies and plenty of sunshine reigned, the riders were greeted by a much drier set of hazards in general as the effects of the rain earlier in the weekend evaporated with the higher temperatures. With this in mind changes were

T&E News V. 50 Issue 6 June 2015 P 71 made to some of the sections James Dabill to ensure that the course would stand the test of a second day of battle. On a warmer and brighter day two, it was con- trasting Repsol Honda team- mates in the form of the expe- rienced Takahisa Fujinami and rookie Jaime Busto who round- ed out the top five respectively. Following his poor showing yesterday, it was Jeroni who made the early running as he finished lap one on thirteen marks, this being one better than Raga and three in front of Bou. Like on Saturday, three maximums and some unchar- acteristic off-form riding by the reigning champion blighted Bou’s opening tour. However, again in a repeat of the previous day, Toni fought back brilliantly on lap two to take control of a lead he was never to relinquish and to notch up his fourth win on the spin. A poor final lap by Jeroni was to gift Raga the runners up spot as the current vice champion delivered three consistent lap scores. After his rostrum finish yes- terday, Cabestany could only manage sixth position today, as he ended the day with an eight-mark advantage over Franz Kadlec on a Beta. The young German rider’s seventh spot represents his best result to date since recently moving to the World Pro class. Dabill, Jack Sheppard (Jgas) and Alexandre Ferrer (Sherco) respectively completed Sunday’s top ten. “It’s been a great weekend,”

T&E News P 72 Franz Kadlec said Bou. “Yesterday I took it quite easy but I had things a bit more complicated today. I was third on the first lap but I put in a really good second one and reacted well. You can’t always win it, but I’m very pleased to have picked up only four points on one of the laps. A lot of it is due to having trained a lot at the Non-Stop during the winter, which even though I don’t like it, I’ve had to make an effort to improve. I’m happy with the weekend and how the champi- onship has started.” FIM World Trials C’Ship Round 2 May 30-31, 2015 Sokolov, Czech Republic RESULTS Day One 1. Toni Bou (Hon) 47 2. To be a racer and watch the season progress from the sidelines is not easy, however not feeling up to racing physi- cally makes it easier to not miss it. On the other hand, being physically able to be competi- tive and opting out of a GNCC or ISDE that didn’t fit into my plan or finances is extremely difficult. And yes, you read that right, I am still not up to rac- ing. I haven’t even ridden a dirt bike yet. I am getting closer day by day and working toward it thanks to the help of my train- ers, team, and sponsors. It will happen when I am ready, and I feel that day is very soon. I did make it out to South Carolina and Tennessee for their national enduros to support the team and watch some racing.
