There have been a few importantstakeholder meetings which took place in the recent weekswhich we are reporting briefly on.And finally, we are ready to open up nominations for the2015/16 Good Practice Awards. Government, business, labour and civil society meet to discuss human resources development Government and its social partners converged at Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand in Johannesburg for the second Human Resources Development Council (HRDC) Council on 29 -30 March 2016. The W&RSETA was amongst the five SE- TAs that sponsored and participate in the Summit. The theme for the 2016 Summit was “Partnerships for Skills – A Call to Action” aimed at identifying strategic partnerships that will enable the HRDC to accelerate skills development and cub unemployment.Deputy President, Honourable Cyril Ramaphosa addressing delegates at the SummitThe HRDC is as a joint initiative between Government, unions and civil society to address the human resourced developmentchallenges in South Africa. It was established in 2014 and is chaired by the Deputy President of the Country, Honourable CyrilRamaphosa with the Minister of Higher Education and Training as the Secretariat.The objective of the Summit was to provide feedback on therecommendations from the various Task Teams that wereestablished after the first HRDC Summit which was held in2014 as well as progress on the revised HRD Strategy.Higher Education and Training Minister, Dr. Blade Nzimandeopened the Summit and highlighted his Department’s rolewhich was to facilitate an enabling environment to equip thefuture generation to participate in the country’s economy. Higher Education and Training Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande Deputy President, Honourable Cyril Ramaphosa interact with the during his welcome address SETA’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Ms MarthaIn his address, the Deputy President indicated that the summit Shingange at the SETA standwas vital as it served as an engine of skills development in thecountry.“The Summit is a call to action to make South Africa a learningand skilled nation. I would like to commend all the institutionsthat are making the effort to contribute to skills development.We are developing the South Africa of tomorrow, brick bybrick, idea by idea, student by student; we are shaping thefuture,” said the Deputy President.In addition to the exhibition opportunity, the SETA showcasedits award-winning project, the KZN Retail Schools of Excellenceto demonstrate the impact of public-private partnerships.Issue 09 |March | 2016 3
SME Department conducts stakeholder forumIn preparation for the second phase of the Informal TradersUpliftment Project (ITUP), the Small Micro Enterprises (SME)department in partnership with the Department of SmallBusiness Development convened a stakeholder forum on 15March 2016 at the Head Office Centurion.The objective of the forum was to encourage participation ofinformal traders on the second implementation of this highlysuccessful project. ITUP II will be launched during the lastcertification ceremony for beneficiaries from the first projectwhich will be held in Gauteng in April 2016.W&RSETA Stakeholders Stakeholders during the ITUP forum During the forum, stakeholders were given an opportunity to present their proposed plans for collaboration on the project. Amongst other issues discussed include, bulk-buying programmes, access to markets, information sharing and training utilising industrial theatre, enterprise and supplier development, spaza proto-types and interactive database management systems.Issue 09 |March | 2016 4
Bursaries and Placements profileBursaries and Placements Department In 2011 the SETA established a Bursary Scheme to benefit deserving, underprivileged students studying wholesale and retail related programmes at universities and TVET colleges. The objective of the Scheme is to make education accessible to young people whilst addressing scarce and critical skills in the Wholesale and Retail Sector. The Bursaries and Placements department was established in 2014 (check) to facilitator the administration of the Bursary Scheme including managing two agents; the National Student Financial Aid Scheme and Careerwise. Rich MokgataAdditionally, the department is also responsible for the coordination of placement of students in various companies to obtainworkplace experience. Uncle Rich was appointed to head the department as its Executive Manager.The department’s fundamental role is to establish sustainable relations between the SETA’s stakeholder companies, institutionsof learning and the bursary administrators. Through the department, the SETA develops a database of unemployed graduatesand students which is accessible to companies for workplace experience and employment opportunities.Department StractureIssue 09 |March | 2016 5
Gauteng Stakeholder Forum held at Head Office The Gauteng regional offices had the quarterly Stakeholder Forum meeting on 18 March at the Head Office in Gauteng. Stakeholder forums are a platform for the SETA to engage stakeholders on various skills development and SETA related issues. The Forum is chaired by a representative from the stakeholder complement elected by the members of the Forum. One of the most important issues that the Forum discusses is the implementation of the SETA’s priorities as outlined in the Strategic Plan. Stakeholders also have an opportunity to engage the SETA on pertinent issues and managing expectations from both sides. Undoubtedly, these platforms are crucial to sustainable good stakeholder relations between the SETA and its stakeholders.Gauteng stakeholders during the quarterly forumIssue 09 |March | 2016 6
