Dr. Deborah Bish is Associate Professor of Clarinet at Florida State University. Before moving to Tallahassee in 2001, she served as the professor of clarinet at Henderson State University. She has performed with orchestras throughout the United States, including the Arizona Opera (most notably in a production of the Ring Cycle), the Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra under the direction of Jeffrey Siegel, the Phoenix Symphony, the North Carolina Symphony, and the Arkansas Symphony. Currently, she is a member of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra.. She has been featured as a recitalist, clinician, and chamber musician at several festivals and conventions including performances at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall; the Shanghai Conservatory in Shanghai, China; the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFests in Lincoln, Austin, Vancouver, Atlanta, and Salt Lake City; the College Band Director’s National Association Convention in Atlanta; the Florida Music Educator’s Association Convention in Tampa, Florida; the Wallowa Lake Chamber Music Festival in Enterprise, Oregon; and the Festival Internacional de Inverno in Vale Vêneto, Brazil. Dr. Bish is very active in the commission, research, and performance of new works. Her recent projects include a recording of the works of Gregory Wanamaker, featuring two pieces written for her by Wanamaker titled clarikinetics and Sonata. Her biography appears in the twenty-fourth edition of the Marquis Who’s Who of American Women and several editions of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. She has served as an adjudicator in a variety of competitions, including both the Young Artist’s Competition and the High School Competition for the International Clarinet Association. Dr. Bish holds degrees from Arizona State University, where she studied under Robert Spring, and Florida State University, where she studied under Frank Kowalsky.
Asher Carlson holds the positions of Principal. Clarinet with the Venice Symphony (Venice, FL) and Principal Bass Clarinet with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra (Tallahassee, FL). Additionally, he has served as Associate Bass Clarinet with the Sarasota Opera (Sarasota, FL) and Artosphere (Fayetteville, AR) festival orchestras and has toured the continental United States, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Italy, and Kenya with chamber ensembles, symphony orchestras, wind bands, and chamber choruses. Asher has also been a featured presenter and performer at Clarinetfest 2017 (Orlando, FL), 2018 (Ostend, Belgium), and 2022 (Reno, NV), the 2022 International Society for Music Education Conference, and Suncoast International Music Education Symposiums XIII and XIV. At the collegiate level, he can be found teaching at the University of South Florida, Saint Leo University, State College of Florida, Florida College, and on faculty of the annual Interlochen Clarinet Institute at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Asher holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the Florida State University, a Master of Music Degree in Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Music Education at the University of South Florida.
David Cook is Assistant Professor of Clarinet and Chair of Instrumental Performance Studies at Millikin University, Principal Clarinet of the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra, and clarinetist for the Appian Duo (with Emily Grabinski, piano) and the Greyline Duo (with Alexandra Rodriguez, flute). Previously a member of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, the Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lieurance Woodwind Quintet, and the windquintet Fiati Five, David has also performed with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera, Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra, Heartland Festival Orchestra, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Norman Philharmonic, and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra. Past performances and presentations include the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest®, the College Music Society National Conference, the NACWPI Conference, the American Single Reed Summit, the Amicitia Clarinet Extravaganza, and the Clarinet Colloquium at Texas A&M University-Commerce. David’s book Clarinet Conditioning: Warm- Ups and Perspectives, featuring contributions from clarinetists including members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, is published by Conway Publications. His research appears in The Clarinet, the NACWPI Journal, and The Instrumentalist. David holds BM and BME degrees from Central Michigan University, MM degrees in clarinet performance and chamber music from the University of Michigan, and the DMA degree in clarinet performance and the MM degree in music theory from the University of Oklahoma. David’s principal teachers include Suzanne Tirk, Chad Burrow, Theodore Oien, and Kennen White. Dr. Meghan Merciers is a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and a current resident of Florence, Alabama. She is Executive Director of the School of the Arts (SOTA) and Associate Professor of Music at the University of North Alabama (UNA) with an applied focus in clarinet. Dr. Merciers has a passion for education and interdisciplinary collaboration and believes these to be some of the most effective forms of arts advocacy. Dr. Merciers has given numerous masterclasses throughout the United States and held performer and lecturer residencies at the Conservatoire de Musique de Courbevoie near Paris and the Conservatoire de Limonest in Lyon, France. Before joining UNA in August 2013, Dr. Merciers taught at Albion College and the Flint School of Performing Arts in Michigan. Dr. Merciers is principal clarinet of the Shoals Symphony Orchestra and regularly performs in the Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, and North Mississippi Symphony Orchestras. She is an active soloist and chamber musician and frequently performs recitals and lectures with her ensembles, Una Duo, Trio Leo, I voci delle leonesse, and Devil Sticks. Dr. Merciers has toured internationally with the French-American Chamber Orchestra in Lyon, France, for a multilingual adaptation of Bernstein's West Side Story; in clarinet trio in Assisi, Italy, at the 2013 International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest; and performed and lectured at numerous state, regional, national, and international conferences. Her most current publication is Radio Static with her ensemble Devil Sticks, which can be streamed on Apple Music, Spotify, and Band Camp. Dr. Merciers earned all of her degrees in Music Performance, including a Doctor of Musical Arts from Michigan State University, a Master of Music from the University of New Mexico, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Her primary artist- teachers include Dr. Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, Professor Keith Lemmons, Dr. Nikolasa Tejero, and Dr. Peter Temko. Dr. Merciers has endorsements as a Silverstein Pro Team Artist, Backun Artist, and Yamaha Performing Artist. She is also active in the Alabama Music Educators Association and is a member of the Governing Board as State Collegiate Advisor for the Alabama Collegiate National Association for Music Education (ALcNAfME). Dr. Merciers earned certification from the Performing Arts Medicine Association as an Arts Educator for the Essentials of Performing Arts Medicine Certificate Course in Instrumental Music.
Mr. Sam Merciers is Lecturer and Coordinator of Music Theory and Composition at the University of North Alabama. He is an active composer, performer, and intermedia artist with a diverse creative background. His recent work focuses on integrating music with film, collaborative efforts in sound design for theatre and documentary film, and interactive sound installations. Dr. Kelsey Paquin is a vibrant performer whose passion and clear musical vision engages audiences in an authentic way. Her joy for music has taken her around the world, having performed throughout the United States and Europe, including the Czech Republic, Austria, and Italy, most notably at Terme Milano and Casa Verdi in Milan and Dvořák Hall in Prague. She has appeared with Panama City Pops Orchestra, Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, Winston Salem Symphony, Western Piedmont Symphony, Piedmont Wind Symphony, Greensboro Opera, and American Wind Symphony Orchestra. Along with pianist William Hueholt, Dr. Paquin is co-founder of Black Dog Duo, a clarinet-piano duo that explores classical, klezmer and modern music with a strong focus on community outreach. She is the 2015 Grand Prize Winner of The University of North Carolina Greensboro Student Artist Competition and appeared as a soloist with the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Paquin has served as Adjunct Applied Faculty in Clarinet at Troy University and Teaching Assistant in Clarinet at Florida State University. She has appeared as lecturer and clinician at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Virginia Commonwealth University, Kutztown University, Stetson University, Florida A&M University, University of Alabama- Birmingham, Furman University, Tennessee Tech University, Chicago State University, and University of Central Arkansas. Dr. Paquin’s current research focuses on the clarinet works of Indian composer John Mayer. As a recipient of the Presser Graduate Music Award, she will travel to London, England and Kolkata, India to continue this research. Her research has resulted in a
publication in the International Clarinet Association’s journal, The Clarinet, and lectures and recitals at ClarinetFest (2021 and 2022), The University of Alabama-Birmingham Clarinet Symposium, and various universities. Dr. Paquin holds a Doctor of Music degree from Florida State University, a Master of Music degree from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a Bachelor of Music degree from Ithaca College, and has studied at G. Verdi Conservatorio di Musica in Milan, Italy. Her primary teachers include Deborah Bish, Jonathan Holden, Anthony Taylor, Kelly Burke, Michael Galván, Luigi Magistrelli, David Sapadin, and Miriam Lockhart. Dr. Paquin is a member of the International Clarinet Association and the College Music Society. Spencer Prewitt currently serves as Associate Professor of Clarinet at Austin Peay State University and beginning in the summer of 2020 he joined the faculty at Bay View Music Festival. Prior to BVMF, Spencer was on faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in for six years. Prewitt earned his B.M. from the University of Oklahoma and his M.M. and D.M.A. from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH. As an orchestral musician Spencer has performed with the symphonies Nashville, Detroit, Toledo, Fort Wayne, Ann Arbor, Flint, Lansing, and the Gateway Chamber Orchestra. Spencer also performed for six seasons with the Ohio Light Opera Orchestra and recorded 11 CDs with the company. Additionally, he is also an active studio musician in Nashville and can be heard on the soundtracks for movies such as Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Harriet, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, My Little Pony and the video game scores for Destiny 2, Minecraft, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft as well as countless other projects. In demand as a recitalist and clinician, Spencer has given recitals and masterclasses throughout the United States and abroad. On recent trips to China he visited Hangzhou, Suzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, and Zhengzhou to perform recitals and give lectures and masterclasses and in April 2022 he visited Manizales, Colombia to perform Ofer Ben-Amots Klezmer Concerto Dr. Prewitt is a Buffet Crampon performing artist and clinician.
Based in the Seattle area, clarinetist Rachel Yoder performs in a variety of solo, chamber and large ensemble roles, including with the Seattle Modern Orchestra and Odd Partials clarinet/electronics duo. She recently performed her works Self-Seed and Aspects/Respects as part of ClarinetFest 2021, premiered William O. Smith’s Evening Ritual (2019) and Microtonal Ritual (2018), and her live recording of Steve Reich’s New York Counterpoint at the Classical KING-FM studios has been featured on NPR’s Performance Today.” Rachel Yoder currently serves as editor of The Clarinet, journal of the International Clarinet Association, and adjunct professor of music at the DigiPen Institute of Technology (Redmond, WA).
