HALL OF FAME Alpine Bank founder and chairman Bob Young honored as 2023 Garfield County Fair & Rodeo Hall of Fame Awardee J. Robert “Bob” Young created a deep and wide legacy of personal philanthropy, corporate citizenship and community activism, in concert with the creation of a multi-billion-dollar Colorado business. The synergistic groundswell of his influence and the culture of giving that he created is amplified through the 900 current employees of Alpine Bank, the organization he founded 50 years ago. His influence has had a huge ripple effect: by way of the thousands who worked for the bank in the past decades, the investors, board members and innumerable community members who model their volunteerism and generosity from Bob Young’s inspired example. Bob is fond of saying, “We learned many years ago that the success of our bank is a reflection of the well-being of the communities we serve.” This visionary leader made philanthropy a foundation of Alpine Bank, alongside five core values of the organization that he identified early on: Independence, Community, Compassion, Loyalty and Integrity. “We learned many years From his humble roots—growing up in Kansas as ago that the success of the grandson of a man who was both a Methodist our bank is a reflection minister and a circuit rider on the Silver Plume to of the well-being of the Georgetown route of the Colorado Central Railroad— communities we serve.” Bob started his bank with $200,000 in investor assets and a dream. His first official act, when cutting the ribbon of that very first bank branch in Carbondale, Colorado, was to share his good fortune with the community with a gift of $50 in silver dollars. That was in 1973. Through the Loyalty Debit Card program that Bob supported, Alpine Bank customer-directed grants, sponsorships and gifts to arts, education, community and environmental causes—contributed dime-by-dime by the bank with every customer debit card transaction—have exceeded $16 million since 1997. Now, with nearly 100,000 card users, the program continues to grow at a rapid pace. With Bob Young’s vision and leadership, Alpine Bank is regularly recognized as a philanthropic frontrunner across the state for its community investment. 2023 Garfield County Fair & Rodeo - 11

IN MEMORIAM Louis Dodo Louis Dodo, a lifetime rancher on West Elk Creek in New Castle, left this earth on March 13, 2023, and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carol. He spent a cou- ple of years “across the pond,” as he used to say, with the US Army in Korea and praised the day he got back to West Elk Creek. He was a long-standing supporter of the 4-H livestock sale and the bygone Catch-it-Heif- er program, and a longtime member of the CCA/Holy Cross Cattlemen’s Association. He enjoyed working hard, caring for baby calves, irrigating, and spend- ing time with his family. His strong work ethic was instilled in his children: Kathy, Kristie, and Dominic. They all turned out pretty well. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be greatly missed by all. His legacy of hard work and dedication lives on at West Elk Ranch with his granddaughter, Sabrina, her husband Ryan Lahti, and their two daughters, making them the sixth generation on the ranch. John Frank Nieslanik, Jr. March 15, 1932 – February 9, 2023 John Nieslanik passed away on February 9th at 7:50PM, while listening to the rosary with his loving wife at his home on his ranch in Carbondale, Colora- do. In his final days he was surrounded by his loving family. John was born to John Sr. and Mary Nieslanik on March 15th, 1932 at home in spring valley, Glenwood Springs. He served in the Korean War and was a member of the 5th armored division. He served as a foot soldier on the front line. When discharged, he was a sergeant with honors. After returning home he married Cecile Linda Letey on June 9th, 1956. Together they had four children. John was an honest, hardworking, lover of the land. Always happy, and willing to help others. His faith meant everything to him. He was a staple in Carbondale and the Roaring Fork Valley. He served on many boards and committees, his most recent being senior housing in Carbondale. He and his family have ranched on the east mesa since 1956 to the present. His first loving wife, Cecile, passed away on September 28th, 1994. On March 23rd, 2002, he married Theresa M. Smith.
