Remembering my arms around her How I stayed up all night Awake, holding the tube beside her We’ve now got through that tortuous hell Her brave little soul dealt with it so well. In relation to the Police teaching self-defence, unfortunately this is not something the Police would do in the public domain; The scheme’s four aims are: Police officers are trained in specific techniques relevant to the role of a Police Officer. ▣ • Promote a practical understanding of policing amongst all young people • Encourage a spirit of adventure and good citizenship • Support local policing priorities through volunteering and give young people a chance to be heard • Inspire young people to participate positively in their communities This is achieved through classroom-based activity, practical exercises, sport and working within the community to assist the Police in specific operations. Cadets will also be encour- aged to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. We meet, in general, on a Thursday evening between 6pm and 8pm at a number of locations throughout Greater Manchester. The first hour or so is in the class looking at law, procedure and social matters with the second half of the session dedi- cated to Drill and Sport. We engage with the local community regularly at events such as the Manchester Marathon and also assist the Police with crime reduction activity like leaflet drops. We sometimes get to go to visit the Mounted unit (horses) and the Air Support unit to see the helicopter. There is a 10-week probationary period where you are taught the basics about the scheme and towards the end of it you will receive a uniform con- sisting of boots, cargos (Police Trousers), a polo shirt, fleece, hi vis coat and a beret with a GMP badge on it. You will have a passing out parade and then you are a full cadet. Once you are 18, should you wish to stay on as a team leader, you can apply to do so and if successful, there is no upper age limit .You can apply by visiting; [email protected] ISSUE27 CVH1STCLASS MAGAZINE 55
