A LITTLE ABOUT Our mission is to provide support, advocacy and education in order to improve the quality of life of individuals with mental illnesses and their families. NAMI DuPage was founded in 1985 by parents of adult children with mental illness. The parents were often isolated, desperate for services, and possessing little information on mental illness or how to live with someone with mental illness. The adult children were stigmatized, ostracized, and in many cases, unable to access treatment or support services. NAMI DuPage was formed as an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and through the years, has become one of the largest and most active affiliates in the United States. For nearly 20 years, NAMI DuPage operated in its founders’ homes, eventually moving to small offices, and adding part-time staff to its long roster of volunteers. In October 2015, the organization moved into its current offices located in the DuPage County Complex. Today, NAMI DuPage operates with 18 full- and part-time staff members and it typically serves 30,000 people each year. NAMI DuPage envisions a community that eliminates the stigma of mental illness, creates awareness to identify illness earlier, and supports and empowers all people impacted by mental health conditions to live life with purpose and meaning.
