TLHEETFTEORUFNRDOEMRI wrote in last year’s annual report a declaration that we would make 2015 “our year” indicated by the fact that the year ends in 5. We let thatnotion drive the passion behind our programs, and our programs dictated our work ethic. It all combined to allow me to open this annualreport announcing the biggest year for the High Fives Foundation in our six-year history. For non-profits, growth comes in so many forms. We saw growth in the reach and impact of all three of our three program services – 37 newEmpowerment Athletes, completion of the five-year B.A.S.I.C.S. series, and expansions to the CR Johnson Healing Center. We implementedthree adaptive camps. We added new events from coast to coast. We hired new specialized full-time and part-time employees. I invite youto read about each of these achievements in the subsequent pages of this report.Planning for the 2015 budget, we set an official fundraising goal of just over $800k. Then we set a secret internal goal known only by ouremployees – we decided this year we wanted to raise $1 million. We took the time to visualize all we could do with an extra 25 percent ontop of our budget. We put everything we had into that goal, and on December 1st of 2015, we were able to announce at our small holiday gathering attendedby staff, healers and a few local athletes, that we had exceeded $1 million with a month of fundraising still ahead of us.Positivity is our fuel. But our motivation is our #HighFivesAthletes and their families. This year, one our area’s most talented photographersand one of our best friends, Jason (Abro) Abraham, experienced a seriously life-altering injury on a perfectly regular day at Squaw Valley.Just a week before, he was out on a photo shoot capturing the successes of High Fives Athletes on the snow (He took the photo on thecover). This is the worst kind of irony. Becoming a High Fives Athlete means the unthinkable has happened. But that’s not where we dwell. Our job is filling in the support and community around Abro and the rest of our 91 athletes so they can focus on one thing, setting recoverygoals and ferociously accomplishing them.As you turn the pages of the annual report, know that this book is in front of you for a reason. If the High Fives Foundation is on your radarin a big or small way, consider yourself a valuable part of our community. Your participation as a donor, as a sharer of social media content,as a guest at an event or however you choose to show your support - it all has a rippling effect of positivity for current or future athletes, and for those who never have to find themselves in those shoes. We have some special moments on our horizon, but this report is about celebrating the moments that have defined the last incredible year.We used 2015 to set the bar for 2016. Thank you for your continued support. High Five,Roy TuscanyExecutive Director | High Fives Foundation 1
EPMROPOGRWAEMRMENTLast year we expanded the Empowerment program service to include athletes withlife-altering injuries from all mountain action sports. (Prior to this year, we only supportedinjuries from winter sports)The Empowerment Fund provides resources and inspiration to those who suffer alife-altering injury. Life-altering injuries are injuries such as spinal cord injuries, traumaticbrain injuries, amputation or other mobility-limiting injuries that occurred in an athlete’slifetime. The resources and inspiration we provide come in the form of board-approvedgrant funding paid to service providers in nine funding categories: living expenses, insurance, health, travel, High Fives Healing Network, adaptive equipment, winterequipment, and “stoke” (positive energy, outlook, attitude). For more information on Empowerment Grant funding policies visit,highfivesfoundation.org/grant-application/ 2015 Achievements $ 60 EMPOWERMENT GRANTS FUNDED 3 ADAPTIVE SPORTS CAMPS WERE MADE TO FOR MORE THAN 20 DISBURSED $339,209 HIGH FIVES ATHLETES IN BOARD-APPROVED 37 DIFFERENT ATHLETES. ADAPTIVE CAMPSIn 2015, we hosted three adaptive sports camps for #HighFivesAthletes. These camps are intended to provide newexperiences and skills in adaptive sports, even the ones outside of “mountain action sports” like waterskiing andsurfing. Most importantly, these High Fives camps strengthen the bonds of friendship and community. This year we hosted camps in Hawaii, Mississippi, and California. Read the stories here and watch the films online High Five the Wave IV | Maui, Hawaii In May 2015, the High Fives Foundation took seven athletes to Maui for the fourth annual High Five the Wave adaptive surf trip. Also along for the ride was a team of coaches and family support. Each athlete on the surf trip experienced a severe spinal cord injury and each is at different stages of recovery. The goal of the journey was to spend as much time as possible surfing in Maui’s warm waters, stretching tired muscles with a daily dose of yoga, and soaking up Hawaii’s aloha spirit. Watch the movie at surf.highfivesfoundation.org 2nd Annual Water Ski Camp on Brooks Lake | Brandon, Mississippi In July 2015, three #HighFivesAthletes whom are normally found skiing on snow traveled to the campus at Unlimited Waterskiing to work on their slalom, freestyle and jump skills with an adaptive water ski. Their coach, Water Ski Hall of Fame inductee, Bill Bowness taught Ezra McPhail, Andrew Kurka and Nick Fairall what it takes to slash through the water. It was the first surf comp for all seven #HighFivesAthletes participating in the event including Bond Camp, Max Elles, Grant Korgan, Josh Dueck, Steve Wallace, Roy Tuscany & Jocelyn Judd. Other High Fives ambassadors included Spike Kane, Alana Nichols & Jeff Munson competing in the first ever adaptive surf class. FCIOVME AMWUANRITDYS The High Fives Foundation emphasizes a strong sense of community in all its activities and program services. Executive Director, Roy Tuscany has witnessed firsthand how important a community can be in the recovery process from a life-altering injury. From his recovery, he created the High Fives Foundation to facilitate a way for the Lake Tahoe area and the national mountain action sports community to come together as a tight-knit collective for families, businesses and philanthropically minded residents. To recognize this, we have created The Community Five Awards, which are awarded annually at our formal gala, The Silver Tie Gala in Reno, Nevada. This award recognizes five distinguished members of the local community for their positive achievements and their efforts to improve the overall wellbeing of everyone around them.12

What has the recovery process been like? I know it’s certainly been long, and you’re stillrecovering, but what kind of things really help you rehabilitate your mind and body?So in the recovery process I found that yoga has given me the most benefit. Because withyoga I’ve been able to start where I am at and move foreword, where other things I’veattempted don’t really meet me where I’m at. And with yoga, I’ve also learned not just thephysical benefits of stretching and strengthening, but also to connect with my inner self tounderstand the limits I have; to not go past them anymore when I’ve already hit my too-tiredpoint to stop. So yoga has been a great benefit.Great and are you teaching yoga right now?Yes, I am. I teach five classes a week. And to whom do you teach yoga?Well I teach people with disabilities, and it ranges from a high functioning person with dis-abilities to someone who has mental and physical limitations. Some of them, in fact, arenon-verbal, so I have to adapt to what I help them with all the time.Do you like teaching yoga?I love teaching yoga. So Lyndsay, you have two Arcade belts here, which means you’ve accomplished two great goals, and both of the goals are around the Sierra Storm. So do you want to tell me a little about the Sierra Storm? Yes, I would love to. So the Sierra Storm is a group of local athletes that are quad- riplegics that have come together to play rugby. And this rugby is kind of mix between wheelchair ice hockey and basketball. So in ice hockey you hit each other, and in basketball you don’t. It’s really fun to play. So you have a third goal. Do you want to tell me about the third goal a little bit? So my next goal with my chair that High Fives was gracious enough to help me acquire is to actually play more time on the court with my teammates during tournaments to have some fun and show the competition that they have more competition on the way. What does the future hold for Lyndsay Slo- cumb? The future: everything. In the future for me, I see myself teaching more yoga. My major right now at my college at UNR is accounting, so I see myself as an accountant somewhere in a local business helping out. 25

All I have to say is… stay tuned. It has been absolutely incredible to watch the growth scale to this point. But I’ve had the unique opportunity to see this revelry of positivityto play out from the start. I’ve known Roy since he was a young skier in the Mad River Valley. I watched him rise to ranks of a professionalskier. When he got injured, I helped his supporters in the state of Vermont raise money for his recovery, and I’ve been part of fundraisingfor the rest of the High Fives Athletes from the very beginning. In 1991, I suffered my own life-altering spinal cord injury mountain biking in Utah. My recovery process was long, and it changed thetrajectory of my whole life. Had High Fives existed, they would have been there for me. 25 years later, being a part of a community that isthere for athletes who were in my same shoes is so important for me. I’m here to pour my heart into this organization for those athletes. As the Foundation heads in to its seventh year, we are incredibly thankful for the outpouring support from coast to coast. Our safetyeducation platform has had the widest reach ever. The Healing Center in California has had the most visits in its four years of existence. We’ve changed the lives for 91 mountain sports athletes and their families. The High Fives athletes, staff, directors, partners, and donors should be very proud of this accomplishment this year. I can’t wait for 2016 tounfold with the next steps in development and growth in this great community. In closing, I ask for your continued support and positive stoke for all of our program services. Participate in the events near you. Donate tothe online campaigns. Share the athlete stories and videos online. These are the things bringing athletes to their feet.High Five to 2016,Jesse MurphyDevelopment Director | High Fives Foundation 41
