Protea Banks Situated 8km off the coast of Shelly Beach in KZN, Protea Banks offers one of the best shark dives in the world. Not only this, but the amazing diversity of species found on Protea Banks is seen only in very few places around the world. It is internationally recognized among the shark diving community and has been attracting a growing number of divers from all around the world. PROTEA BANKS is a unique reef system with an amazing topography. The presence of a great diversity of game fish attracts a wide variety of top predators.

Protea Banks Seasons PROTEA BANKS offers an exceptionally exciting SHARK dive. Divers have the opportunity to experience a SHARK dive that is completely unique. There are only a few places in the word that you can see such a wide variety of SHARK species and it is certainly not uncommon to see up to 5 different species of SHARKS on a single dive on PROTEA BANKS!!! The BULL (Zambezi) SHARK and OCEANIC BLACKTIP SHARK are encountered throughout the year on Protea Banks They can be seen on every dive and is aways present in great numbers in our baited dives

An encounter with a Tiger Shark is the ultimate Shark encounter. Pure adrenalin From January to June, one also has the added privilege of seeing the elusive TIGER SHARK. The Tiger Shark is one of the largest sharks; it ranks in average size only behind the Whale Shark, the Basking Shark and the Great White Shark. The Tiger Shark is a robust shark that has an average length of 3.5–4.5 m but There are Tiger Sharks thought to attain 7m in length. 1000`s of hammerheads in Protea Banks it is a breathtaking sight From September to February Protea banks hosts one of the biggest shows on Earth - the migration of thousands, yes you read correctly, thousands of HAMMERHEAD SHARKS. This magnificent migration is mind blowing and will keep you coming back for more!!!!

RAGGED-TOOTH SHARKS COME TO PROTEA BANKS TO MATE!!!! From May to November, the caves of the Northern Pinnacles of Protea Banks, become home to 100's of RAGGED-TOOTH SHARKS, that have come to the KwaZulu Natal coast to mate Humpback whale season From June to November hundreds of Humpback Whales migrate from the Southern Pole to the warmer waters of KwaZulu Natal, giving us an amazing show during our boat trip to and from the dive site ... and yes ... we have had incredible underwater encounters with these magnificent WHALES!!! Dolphins are also a regular sighting throughout the year.

Protea Banks is not only about the sharks Dusky sharks also make an appearance on PROTEA BANKS. Aside from sharks, PROTEA BANKS also boasts a vast number of game fish such as Tuna, Barracuda, Kingfish, Tropical Amberjack, Bonito, Prodigal Son to name but a few. Friendly Potato Bass are often encountered and sometimes we are privileged to see Brindle Bass. A variety of Rays are also a common sighting – Guitar shark ,Round Ribbontail Rays, Eagle Rays and occasionally Manta Rays.

Baited dive: Are you passionate about diving with sharks? Have you never seen a shark but wanted to? Do you want to have a close encounter with these amazing animals and take awesome photos? Then a baited dive is what you are looking for! It is the perfect opportunity to get really close to the biggest predators of the oceans. The sharks commonly seen on our baited dives though out the year are Bulls (Zambezis), Oceanic Blacktips and Duskies, but from February to May each year we are privileged to have a very important visitor, the Tiger Shark. This majestic and powerful animal visits our baited dives very often during the season and so you can get really close for a chance to get that perfect underwater photograph.

Safari ISimangaliso Wetland Park (previously known as the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park) is the 3rd biggest protected area in SA and one of the biggest wetlands in the word. It offers dramatic scenery and is home to the African Hippopotamus, Elephant, Leopard, black and white Rhino, Buffalo, and in the ocean, Whales, Dolphins, and marine Turtles including the Leatherback and Loggerhead Turtles. Umfolozi game reserve- The second biggest game reserve in South Africa lies in the heart of the Zulu kingdom and is also Africa’s oldest established wilderness area. Hluhluwe and Imfolozi Game Reserves covers some 96 000 hectares and contains great diversity of fauna and flora. It is home to the big five and many more.

Our accomodation St Michael's Sands overlooks one of SA's safest beaches in this protected bay. Enjoy a cocktail on the sun terrace, a romantic dinner, a day out on the on- site Golf course or a game of bowls. St Michaels has it all. You could spend the day swimming, surfing or paddling on- site while many other attractions such as tennis, squash, sailing and horse riding are nearby. The resort is within walking distance of St Michael's Beach, and minutes away from restaurants and shops. Our boat Our boat Protea is a 7,5 M rubber duck, brand new and perfect for launch through the surf. It can confortable accommodate 10 divers.
