It is aimed at boosting up your word power and thus, muster up your courage to speak business better in your work environment. Lesson starts hereunder:- 1. If you work in an office, so you are an office worker. Someone works IN an office but, someone works AT “ company name “ - Facebook, Petrobras, Google, Carrefour, etc. 2. Normally, an office job is a nine-to-five job with regular working hours. In other words, a job running from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. If you want to talk about time “ das … as “, you can say these phrases; A. To run from 09h00 to 17h00 B. To work from 09h00 through 17h00 C. To operate from 09h00 until 17h00 If you don’t work fixed hours, you don’t have a regular job. If you talk from Monday to Friday, you can say “ weekdays “, but if you mean “ dias uteis “, you say “ working days “. For some, they have 5 working days and for others, they may count Saturday and make up to 6 working days. Page 1 Teacher Daby
3. In most companies, normally, we all have to clock in and clock out every day for payroll. Payroll - is the number of headcount in a company & the department taking care of this account is called as “ payroll department “. To clock in or to clock on means the action of punching your company card or use your finger for fingerprint to sign in at work for payroll. When you finish work, you need to do the same by to clock out or to clock off. This is the clocking machine where you use your finger to sign in. This is the clocking machine where you punch your work card record to sign in. 4. If you work in a sector, you can say that “ I'm in (sector) - computer programming / sales / marketing / international trade. Remember that someone works IN a field. Page 2 Teacher Daby
5. Owing to the fact that we have a terrible road traffic on weekdays plying up and down to work, there's a system of flexitime in my company, which facilitates our check-in at work. This means we can work when we want, within certain limits. A. Owing to = devido a B. Plying up and down to a place = is a usual way or routine trip from one point to another. 6. In other companies, if you need to start at 09h00, they docked you 15 to 30 minutes. In other words, they allow you a tolerance of 15 to 30 minutes of any unexpectations. C. To dock (time) = to allow some time for adjustment 7. Workers working in plants or factories, work in shifts. Some are on the day shift one week and the other are night shift the next week. So, they usually do mixed hours. In most cases, they need to work overtime and they are paid overtime allowance. D. Work in shifts = trabalhar de plantão. E. Overtime allowance = is the sum to be paid as a compensation by the labour law. 8. Changing shifts can bring problems changing to a new routine for sleeping and eating, and health complications. 9. In the Europe, people working in big cities, prefer to live in the country. And, they are thousands of other commuters commuting up and down on the train into the main cities. In the countryside, the quality of life is much more better to bring up a child, fresh air, bigger houses, garden and so on. Page 3 Teacher Daby
10. Working from home using a computer and the Internet is becoming more and more popular, and many companies are introducing this: it's called teleworking or telecommuting or working from home. Please do not say “ Today I will do home office “ Doing home office are English words with Portuguese local concepts, instead learn the above expressions to say “ trabalhar em casa “. 11. Describing your job; - all these words are used in front of ‘ job ' & ‘ work ’:- A. I have done a satisfying job. B. The work is interesting and gives you positive feeling. C. I have a dull, boring, uninteresting, unstimulating (= the work is not interesting). D. I have a stimulating, fascinating, exciting (= the work is interesting). E. I have a repetitive, routine (= the work involves doing the same things again & again). F. I have a tiring, tough, hard, demanding (= the work is difficult & makes you tired). G. My work involves human contact, long hours, team work, solving problems, travelling a lot & dealing with customers. 12. The company, where I work at, is committed to helping its employees learn about their jobs and develop their skills for the whole period they are working here. ‣ To be committed means “ ter o compromisso “ 14. They run regular courses & workshops in order to achieve this, both on and outside the company premises. ‣ When the company organises & provides “ courses / training “, so they are running them and you attend them. ‣ A premises (in plural form) - is a building (predio) ‣ You can use the words; “ premises, building, facilities, office tower (if being specific about an office building) “. 14. Inside many companies’ premises, it is so common to have many amenities and facilities. ‣ Amenities - is to refer to things that are designed to provide comfort, ergonomics, and pleasure to the guests / workers such as; massage chairs, table tennis, playstation sets, snooker, sauna, hot showers, laundry services, WiFi, Concierge desk, etc. ‣ Facilities - is referred to places or even equipment built to facilitate guests in their specific needs such as; gym, swimming pool, garage, etc. Page 5 Teacher Daby
