HEAD COACH Coach Gilbert is now in his fourth season with the Friars after coming to Servite from Long Beach State University where he served as an Assistant Coach and was the hitting, outfield coach, and 3B coach from 2010 to 2014. Coach Gilbert has led the Friars to back-to- back playoff appearances in 2017 and 2018 and has sent 25+ players to compete collegiately over the last four years. Before his time at Long Beach State, he spent 5 years at Fresno Pacific University as an as- sistant coach and helped start a brand new program at FPU. In 5 years, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds appeared in 3 regionals and made 1 trip to the NAIA College World Series. While at SHAWN GILBERT FPU Gilbert served as the teams hitting, infield, and 3B coach. Coach Gilbert received his Bachelor’s Degree from Fresno State University where he played 2 seasons under legendary coach Bob Bennett. Before attending Fresno State, Shawn started his college at Arizona State University, then transferred to Golden West College. “I have had some unbelievable coaches in my career having played for 4-5 big league managers but non have had as big an impact on my career as my college coaches Doug Mansolino, Fred Hoover, Jeff Pentland, and Bob Bennett. Even today after all my time in the game I still think of those guys as mentors and not a day go’s by where I don’t think of something they did or said that helped me.” After Fresno State he went on to play professional baseball and upon his retirement from baseball as a player he went back and finished his bachelor’s degree and then went on to earn his Master’s degree from Fresno Pacific University. Coach Gilbert came into coaching with an extensive baseball background having played 17 season’s professionally. Gilbert played for 7 different major league organizations with a 1 year stint in the Jap- anese Major Leagues. He played parts of 3 seasons in the Major Leagues with the New York Mets, St.Louis Cardinals, and Los Angeles Dodgers. While in Japan playing for the Kintetsu Buffalos Shawn had a unique opportunity to not only play in another country but also play in the Japanese World Series. “Even though we lost the championship in 5 games that experience was awesome! To see the way a whole city gets behind a team and to see how baseball crazy they are in Japan was incredible, I will never forget it!” Coach had the opportunity to represent the USA in international play once as an 18 yr old in the World Friendship Series, again in ’99 in the Pan Am Games where the US won Silver medal and quali- fied for the 2000 Olympics, and was an alternate on the Gold Medal winning 2000 Olympic team that competed in Sydney, Australia.6 | BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE 2018
