Understanding the causes, symptoms, and available treatments for vitiligo
A chronic skin illness called vitiligo (safed daag) is characterised by the loss of pigmentation in certain regions of the skin, leaving behind white patches. It takes place when the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives the skin, hair, and eyes their colour, are destroyed.
A disorder known as autoimmunity, in which the immune system of the body erroneously targets and kills these pigment-producing cells, may be the cause of vitiligo. Despite the fact that it can affect any part of the body, it frequently affects the face, hands, arms, feet, and genital regions. Vitiligo can start at any age, however it frequently does so before the age of 20.
