52 SAAS-FEE GUIDES . WINTER 2019 Coloured screens replace analogue dashboard displays and automatic steering systems support THE EVOLUTION... the driver; in recent decades, snow groomers have undergone a lot of changes. To mark the 50th ...OF BEASTS anniversary of PistenBully, the industry leader, we took a look at some key milestones in their BEFORE 1950: FIRST ATTEMPTS development. In 1924, the first Winter Olympics took place in Chamonix. All of a sudden, skiing became a mainstream sport, and with its rise in Photos: Archive Kässbohrer Geländefahrzeug AG, Collection popularity came a growing demand for quality downhill slopes. Thomas Burgener Initially, simple manual rollers were used to compress the snow. But innovators soon replaced these with motorized tools. Text: Patrick Gasser 1961: SAAS-FEE'S MOTORIZED SKI LIFT Translation: Danielle Moore & Adam Spensley In the fledgling ski resort of Saas-Fee, transport facilities for skiers were still limited. On Längfluh, a tracked vehicle made by the Swiss manufacturer Rolba was used to transport people onto and around the glacier slopes. 1969: THE ORIGINAL PISTENBULLY In the year most commonly remembered for the first moon landing, Kässbohrer's design engineers test drove their first prototype. Hydrostatic drive and steering wheel control were integral parts of the mass production of the original PistenBully snow groomer. The petrol engine, however, was replaced with a diesel model.1972: BREAKTHROUGH IN SAPPOROSki resort operators from all over the world gradually beganto take notice of the southern German snow groomers. Thedevelopment team showed off six PistenBullys at the 1972Winter Olympic games in Sapporo, Japan, which drew furtherattention to the already growing brand.. 1984: A WINCH FOR STEEP SLOPES With the launch of the PistenBully 200 DW, the first vehicle made especially for grooming and maintaining extremely steep terrain arrived on the market. It was made possible by a special drum winch developed by the small western Swiss company, Plumettaz SA. The winch is used to support and secure the vehicle on extreme uphill and downhill slopes.
THE EVOLUTION 53 1999: CHANGING SHAPE The first iteration of the PistenBully 3000, which came on the market in the mid-1990s, was powered by a Detroit diesel engine. However, at the turn of the millennium, for the very first time, this was replaced by a Mercedes power unit. At the same time, more and more electronics began making their way into new PistenBullys designs, and angular shapes began to give way to curved lines.2007: PRECISION TECHNOLOGY FOR HALFPIPESEver since snowboarders first competed for Olympic medals inNagano's 1998 halfpipe contest, snowparks have been built to anever more professional standard. The curved walls, which standup to seven metres high, require intensive maintenance andgrooming. This photograph from 2007 shows a PistenBully 600using a special device called Pipemagican to undertake the task. 2011: SAVE SNOW AND DIESEL WITH SATELLITE TECHNOLOGY In 2011, the Snowsat slope and fleet management system came into place to aid drivers and reduce costs. Now, thanks to real- time satellite data displayed on-screen, the driver knows exactly how much snow there is and where. This allows them to use the snow, and in particular the costly artificially produced snow, more efficiently.2012: FROG-GREENOver the years, red had become the trademark colour for snowgroomers. But in 2012, the first frog-green snow groomers, which came from the southern German town of Laupheim, appeared. The colour change came with good reason:thanks to the new diesel-electric drive system, developersclaim that the PistenBully 600 E + emits twenty percent lessC02 and up to ninety-nine percent fewer soot particles. The400 horsepower Mercedes engine is bolstered by electricalpower from two generators. The downhill braking forceis converted into energy which propels the rotary cutter. 2018: NOT JUST FOR THE PROS Each autumn, the best freeskiers and snowboarders in the world come to train on the immaculately shaped jumps, and slick metal rails of Saas-Fee. But it is not only the pros whose expectations are rising – ski resorts worldwide are increasingly having to focus on features like funslopes and adventure runs. These developments have meant that snow groomers need to serve new, different roles. And the creators of the PistenBully 400 ParkPro 4F certainly kept that in mind as they developed its highly adjustable blades and tillers. Moreover, simplified, more ergonomic operation makes it easier for drivers with a trained eye and a good feel for it to build high-quality freestyle parks.

Using the 'Telemark' technique, one Sondre Norheim won an 1868 alpine ski competition, despite having already covered most of the 200-kilometre journey to the contest on skis.

Beat Supersaxo and Aldo Lomatter were some of the first to descend it on skis back in 1976. Taking a quantum leap for the world of skiing, the pair grappled with the fifty-five-degree incline, taking more than 200 turns. Forty years on, Jérémie Heitz and Sam Anthamatten are pushing the limits of possibility on this legendary face once again. It was the imposing northeast face of Tyrolean Heini Holzerfrom and western Swiss Sylvain Saudan, the mountain that fascinated Supersaxo, now sixty-eight, who are now considered pioneers of steep skiing.

Saas-Fee – Critics call them 'kamikaze skiers,' while others marvel at these ‘skiers of the impossible’. They are the members of a small tribe of skiers, who in recent years have begun to take on descents that were previously the sole preserve of mountaineers armed with crampons, ice picks and ropes. These runs, taken on near-vertical walls covered with a stable layer of spring snow are the objects of desire for the avant-garde of this courageous new generation of ski alpinists. Sylvain Saudan, one of the first Valais locals to take on such spectacular descents on skis, has already attracted a lot of commotion in the past. His daring turns have earnt him many a headline. Now, he has inspired imitators in the Upper Valais. They certainly rival the 'master' when it comes to courage and guts, but far surpass him in modesty and sporting spirit. And so it came to be that early this summer, Beat Supersaxo and Aldo Lomatter accomplished a feat only achieved before them by Saudan, and Austria’s Heini Holzer, a skier who has since suffered a fatal accident on Piz Roseg: the young mountain guides and ski instructors from Saas-Fee skied the famous north face of the Lenspitze, a slope of fifty to fifty-five degrees!PREPARING FOR DESCENT their fitness in the gym and navigating the half hours.
