56 SAAS-FEE GUIDES . SUMMER 2018 A TRAIL ACROSS THE ICE The well-marked path between Restaurant Mattmark and the Britannia Hut traverses two glaciers. The route offers the chance to see ibex and marmots aplenty. Photos: Ellen Amann & Dario Andenmatten Text: Patrick Gasser Translation: Danielle Moore & Adam Spensley A STUNNING VISTA The path up to the Britannia Hut starts along the western edge of the lake, leading through a tunnel in the rock and, before long, branching off onto the route towards Schwarzberg. This white- red-white marked mountain trail ascends to the 2,868-metre-high Schwarzbergchopf, and presents more of a challenge with some notably steep and exposed parts. By this point, you’ll likely be glad of a sturdy pair of hiking boots to provide some much-needed stability. The Schwarzbergchopf is an ideal place for a rest, especially given the magnificent views it provides of the mountains surrounding Lake Mattmark. It’s important to note that from this point on, the route markings switch to white-blue-white. From the foot of the Üssere Turu, you begin to traverse the scree and snowfields of the Allalin GlacierF or forty-six-year-old Dario Andenmatten, early summer is a demanding time. The manager of the Britannia Hut has the arduous task of distributing sixty blue posts across the Hohlaub and Allalin glaciers. These blue poles signpost one of the most beautiful trails in the whole of the Saas Valley: the Glacier Trail. It takes just thirty minutes on the PostBus to get from Saas-Fee to the artificial Lake Mattmark, where the trail begins. In 1967, the construction of the dam was completed, blocking the path of the Saaser Vispa and creating a sizable reservoir sitting at 2,197 metres above sea level. Restaurant Mattmark can be found at the western end of the dam and marks a great spot for a morning coffee. Alongside which, one of their famous Crémeschnitte (vanilla custard cream cakes) - renowned throughout the Saas Valley - is a must.

An “boats are the most relaxing way of getting around,” they also avid mountain guide, he has led hundreds of guests to summits and on ski tours with the Saas-Fee Guides. It wasn’t, however, an obvious choice of career for someone who grew up in the southeastern part of the Alpine republic. Schladming, his nearest ski area, is at least an hour and a half’s drive away from where he grew up. \"It was my mother that introduced me to the mountains,\" Michi reveals. He first qualified as a ski instructor through an Austrian state training course, but was soon working his way through courses for aspiring mountain guides, and today he holds the highest possible guiding qualifications. Of course, his passion for exploring doesn’t stop with the mountains: Michi inherited a love of sailing from his father. This might seem another curious choice, Austria is, after all, a landlocked country, but in reality, the Mediterranean is only four hours’ drive from Graz.LIVING THE DAYDREAMPerfect climbing rocks, right on theSardinian coast.
