THE ABC OF THE ROTARY Excerpt from the book by Cliff Dochterman PAUL HARRIS – THE FIRST, BUT NOT THE FIRST Was Paul Harris the first President of the Rotary Club? No. Was Paul Harris the first President of Rotary International? Yes. There is a simple explanation for this obvious inconsistency. Although Paul Harris was the founder and organizer of the first Rotary Club in Chicago in 1905, the first president was one of the other founders - Silvester Schiele. By 1910, there were 16 Rotary clubs linked to an organization called the National Rotary Club. A few years later, with the founding of clubs in Winnipeg, Canada and England, Ireland and Scotland, the name of the organization was changed to the International Rotary Clubs Organization. In 1922, the name was shortened to Rotary International. When, the first Rotary Club organization was created in 1910, Paul Harris was elected the first president, serving from 1910 to 1912. Thus, the initiator of the Rotary idea, who refused to be the president of the first club, became the first president of the world organization, Rotary International. NAMES OR NICKNAMES Rotary members are on friendly terms from the very beginning. Given that personal acquaintances and friendships are the cornerstone of Rotary, it is natural that many clubs have accepted the custom to leave official titles on the side in mutual communication. People who are otherwise referred to as doctor, professor, gentleman or your Excellency, are for the other Rotarians simply Joe, Charlie or Jerry. A typical Rotary badge on which the person’s name is written is another proof of this custom. In some regions, such as Europe, members of the club are more formal in their communication. In other parts of the world, mainly in Asia, it is customary to give members of the club a nickname according to a specific feature or depending on the member’s profession. For example, a member nicknamed ‘Oxygen’ is a chemical gas manufacturer, ‘Wood’ is the nickname of a Rotarian who deals with wood processing, ‘Building’ is a civil engineer, and ‘Paper’ is a representative of a paper mill. Other members have nicknames like ‘Superman,’ ‘Trumpet’ or ‘Smiley’ on the basis of physical appearance. Nicknames are often used for friendly banter. However, regardless of whether Rotarians use names or nicknames, the spirit of mutual friendship is an initial step that opens the doors to all occasions for service. THE INTERNATIONAL COMMITMENTS OF THE ROTARIANS As an international organization, Rotary offers each member unique opportunities and commitments. Although the primary responsibility of every Rotarian it to be an exemplary citizen of their country, Rotary membership opens a slightly different view of the world for Rotarians. In the early 1950s, a Rotary platform was adopted that describes how a Rotarian should think on a global level. “The Rotarian, as a citizen of the world, should observe things above national patriotism and see himself as someone who shares responsibility for improving international understanding, good will and peace; opposes any tendency to act as national or racially superior; finds and develops common bases for communicating with the peoples of other countries; supports the order and the law in order to preserve the liberty of personality, and with the aim of freedom of thought, speech and assembly and freedom from persecution, aggression, insignificance and fear; supports actions aimed at improving living standards for all people, aware that poverty endangers prosperity all over the world; supports the principles of justice for all people; is always trying to promote peace among countries and to be prepared for personal sacrifice to achieve this ideal; promotes and implements in practice the spirit of understanding for others as a necessary step towards the development of goodwill, aware that there are certain basic moral and spiritual standards that ensure a richer and more full life.” This is a rather comprehensive task that every Rotarian needs to consider and implement!
