ACTIVITIES IN THE DISTRICTK CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ROTARY FOUNDATION JULY-DECEMBER 2018 Having summed up the results for the first six months of our Rotary Year we can be pleased with the fact that the total contributions of our District for the Rotary Foundation amount to 60.926 USD, which gives us a guarantee that this Rotarian year will finally exceed the magic goal of 100.000 USD of contributions to the Foundation. In addition to two Global Grants currently being realized (RC Belgrade Cukarica and RC Belgrade Skadarlija), the ‘4x250’ and ‘PHF ++’ Projects have significantly added to the contributions to the Rotary Foundation. These projects are of extreme importance to our District since, after many years, in the last Rotarian year, there has been a significant increase in the District's contributions to the Rotary Foundation, especially to the Annual Fund, from which every third year, 50% of the funds invested are ploughed back into the District DDF for Global Grants and District Grants. From November, when we officially continued with the ‘4x250’ and ‘PHF ++’ Projects, until the end of December 2018, our clubs realized 55 PHF awards (as of January 14, 2019, we already have 68 PHF awards). Budva, Belgrade Sava, Belgrade Stari Grad, Bijelo Polje and Nis Konstantin Veliki Rotary clubs stood out in this respect. There are procedures in progress for obtaining another 30 PHF awards, so it is realistic to expect that we will have close to 100 PHF awards achieved in this Rotary year by the time our traditional Rotary Day celebration is held. With special pleasure and pride we can conclude that by the RI Celebration we will have five 100% PHF clubs: RC Belgrade, RC Ulcinj, RC Pancevo Mihajlo Pupin and RC Belgrade Sava. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Until the end of this year, we will continue with the Annual Fund contributions either through the ‘4x250’ Project or through the use of the existing PHF points through the ‘PHF ++’ Project. In addition,, we must increase our contributions to the Polio Plus Fund as the results are not satisfactory given that only 13 clubs have paid the planned amount to this fund.
‘101 ZA 101’ - 101 PROJECTS FOR 101 SCHOOLS As part of the celebration of the 101st Anniversary of the Rotary Foundation, we continued with the project of helping schools, this time under the title ‘101 for 101’ - 101 projects for 101 schools in Serbia and Montenegro. The bulk of donations was made through Global Grant 1870836, where we collected $ 153,561 with the help of 52 clubs from the country and abroad and a number of districts. This enabled us to deliver 500 computers to 110 schools in 50 cities and municipalities in the first phase. By the end of this Rotarian year, in the second phase of this project, another 100 computers will have been delivered by this Global Grant. At this end of the 2018 calendar year, we are delighted that the plan has already been fulfilled, since, at the time of writing, donations have been received by 114 schools from 244 donors, and the total value of the donation so far is 144,545 dollars. By the end of our Rotary Year, we plan to have realized a minimum of 150 donations for our schools. It is especially important to us, in agreement with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia, to include a larger number of socially responsible companies in the project of equipping schools as a permanent task. We will aim to sign the School Equipment Memorandum under the working title ‘For a Beautiful School’ at our celebration of the RI together with the Minister of Education and Company Directors. ROTARY AWARDS OF RI PRESIDENT IAN RISELEY Each Rotary year, the presidents of the RI determine the goals and priorities that clubs need to achieve to the largest extent possible. PROMOTION OF THE FILM AND BOOK ABOUT VISUALLY-IMPAIRED MARATHON RUNNER GORAN NIKOLIC After successful completion of the \"55 marathons in 55 days\" Project, District 2483 and clubs in the District organized promotions of the film and book about Goran Nikolic, Serbia’s visually- impaired marathon runner, financed by the ‘Delta Foundation’. Thirty-three organized promotions were attended by a large number of Rotarians, our friends and high school students who rewarded Goran Nikolic, the ever-present marathon runner, at the end of each viewing with great applause. A total amount of 642,100 dinars was collected from the donations for the books of Goran Nikolic, which enable our clubs to provide more than 300 free days at the ‘Iskra’ Regional Center in Kragujevac, where Goran Nikolic is the manager, for children with disabilities and their professional attendants. Each club, in accordance with its financial contribution to this action, will plan, in coordination with DT Zorica Jestrovic and Goran Nikolic, the stay of children from their town and their professional attendant in Kragujevac starting from February 2019. We are eagerly awaiting the next undertaking of Goran ‘77 marathons in 77 days’ from April 15, 2019 in Chicago. The project is also supported by RI President Barry Rassin, who will receive Goran Nikolic at the RI headquarters in Evanston. Let us all join in and help Goran further raise the reputation of our District.

THE ABCs OF ROTARY BY CLIFF DOCHTERMANN THE SPONSORING OF A NEW MEMBER The bylaws of Rotary clearly outline the procedure for a prospective member to be proposed for Rotary club membership. The \"proposer\" is a key person in the growth and advancement of Rotary. Without a sponsor, an individual will never have the opportunity to become a Rotarian. The task of the proposer should not end merely by submitting a name to the club secretary or membership committee. Rotary has not established formal responsibilities for proposers or sponsors. However, by custom and tradition these procedures are recommended in many clubs. The sponsor should: 1. Invite a prospective member to several meetings prior to proposing the individual for membership. 2. Accompany the prospective new member to one or more orientation; informational meetings. 3. Introduce the new member to other club members each week for the first month. ROTARY AWARD FOR WORLD UNDERSTANDING Since 1981, the Rotary Award for World Understanding has been given each year, with one exception, to an individual or organization ‘whose life or work demonstrates in some exemplary or worthy manner the Rotary ideal of service, especially in the promotion of international understanding, goodwill and peace.’ The award is presented at the Rotary International Convention. A special worldwide committee makes the selection, which must then be approved by the R.I. Board of Directors and the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation. In addition to a beautiful crystal sculpture, $100.000 is also awarded and the award provides the opportunity for the recipient to select ten Rotary Foundation scholars who then receive their ambassadorial scholarships in the distinguished award winner's name. Past recipients of the World Understanding Awards have been: 1981, Dr. Noburo Iwamura, Japanese professor of medical research; 1982, Pope John Paul II; 1983, Dr. Lotta Hitschmanova, Canadian humanitarian; 1984, The World Organization of the Scouts Movement; 1985, Dr. Albert B. Sabin, developer of the oral polio vaccine; 1986, International Committee of the Red Cross; 1987, Lady Hermione Ranfurly, for worldwide Ranfurly Library Services; 1988, The Salvation Army; 1989, no award; 1990, Vaclav Havel, president of Czechoslovakia; 1991, Javier Perez de Cuellar, secretary general of the United Nations; and 1992, Edward J. Piszek, U.S.A. businessman-philanthropist. 1992, Edward J. Piszek, American businessman and philantrophist; 1993, Dr Fred Hollows, Australian medical doctor; 1994, former US President Jimmy Carter and 1995, James Grant, former executive director of UNICEF. SHARING ROTARY WITH NEW MEMBERS Are you aware of the responsibility or obligation most Rotarians fail to perform? Paying their dues? Attending meetings? Contributing to the club's service fund? Participating in club events and projects? No - none of these! Of all the obligations a person accepts when joining a Rotary club, the one in which most Rotarians fail is ‘sharing Rotary.’ The policies of Rotary International clearly affirm that every individual Rotarian has an ‘obligation to share Rotary with others and to help extend Rotary through proposing qualified persons for Rotary club membership.’ It is estimated that less than 30 percent of the members of most Rotary clubs have ever made the effort to propose a new member. Thus, in every club, there are many Rotarians who readily accept the pleasures of being a Rotarian without ever sharing that privilege with another qualified individual. The Rotary policy on club membership states: ‘In order for a Rotary club to be fully relevant to its community and responsive to the needs of those in the community, it is important and necessary that the club include in its membership all fully qualified prospective members located within its territory.’ One merely has to glance through the pages of the local telephone directory to realize that most clubs have not invited qualified members of all businesses and professions into Rotary. Only a Rotarian may propose a customer, neighbor, client, supplier, executive, relative, business associate, professional or other qualified person to join a Rotary club. Have you accepted your obligation to share Rotary? The procedures are very simple, and everyone must know at least one person who should belong to Rotary.
