DG Christina’s Monthly Message District Newsletter Issue 2/3 – August/September 2017 Page 2 Dear Fellow Rotarians of our Great District 2452, Let me start by wishing all the very best to everyone who celebrates the Eid el Adha or the Kurban Bayram! Observing our traditions is the best way to pass the correct values to our children and the generations to come. We are now well into our new Rotary Year and as the summer recedes we should be all falling into our new routine. Our club program should be attracting the interest of our club members and guests, our committees working in full force to successfully achieve the club’s goals and complete the club projects. Likewise, I’m preparing for my tour of the District which begins on the 26th September with my first visit to Lebanon. The purpose of the club visits is so that Governors tour their Districts and can have the opportunity to meet as many Rotarians as possible; to encourage the clubs in their work; to share with the members the club’s achievements; to actively participate in their projects. At the same time, the Governor is there to discuss with the club leaders their worries, answer their questions and offer support for the club’s beneficial development. Rotarians by their dedication, their generosity and sacrifice of valuable time make up every successful and vibrant club. Rotary International is made up of clubs not individual Rotarians and its strength for service is only reflected by the strength of its clubs. I am very much looking forward to meeting every possible Rotarian in our unique district, sharing the traditions of each of our countries and discovering every single large or small project processed by our clubs with one single purpose. ‘To Make a Difference’.

Rotary International News District Newsletter Issue 2/3 – August/September 2017 Page 3 Presidential message - August 2017 Ian H.S. Riseley President 2017 When someone asks you, \"What is Rotary?\" what do you say? I think we've all had the experience of being asked that deceptively simple question and finding ourselves suddenly at a loss for words. Even the most articulate among us have a hard time capturing the essence of our organization in just a few sentences. As an organization, Rotary has always had a difficult time conveying the scope of our work: not just what we do, but how we do it, and the value of what we contribute to the world. As an accountant, I like numbers. They work in every language, and often they communicate complex information much more effectively than words. That is why, in this Rotary year, I am asking each club to provide Rotary headquarters with two numbers: the amount of money, both in cash and in kind, spent on humanitarian service; and the number of hours of work performed in Rotary's name. If we want these numbers to be useful, they have to be accurate. That means beginning now to accurately track the hours and the money that our clubs spend on their service. The simplest way for clubs to provide this information at the end of the year will be by entering it every month on Rotary Club Central – a tool that has been completely rebuilt and relaunched to be significantly more useful, and user-friendly, than it has been in the past. If for some reason (for example, limited internet access) your club is not able to connect to Rotary Club Central, please be in touch with your district governor, who will ensure that your information can be submitted through other means. I cannot emphasize strongly enough that the goal of this effort is not getting the largest and most impressive numbers. There is not going to be any competition, recognition, or public use whatsoever of the numbers reported by any individual club. The goal is accurate and reliable numbers that we can present confidently in our public image work, in our membership materials, and to our partners – numbers backed by specific data, on the club level, that answer not only the question, \"What is Rotary?\" but the question, \"What does Rotary do?\" I strongly believe that with these numbers, we will be better able to demonstrate the value of Rotary: Making a Difference – which in time will enable us to make more of a difference, for more people, in more ways, than ever. Rotary International News District Newsletter Issue 2/3 – August/September 2017 Page 4 Presidential message - September 2017 Ian H.S. Riseley President 2017 One of the best parts of any Rotary convention is the sheer diversity of the people you see there. Whether you're heading into a breakout session, exploring the House of Friendship, or sitting down for a bite to eat, you'll meet people from every corner of the world, in all kinds of national attire, speaking just about every language. It's a lot of fun, and it's a big part of what makes Rotary great: that we can be so different and still find ourselves so at home together. That spirit of warm community that is so central to Rotary also defines Toronto, our host city for the 2018 Rotary International Convention. Toronto is one of my favorite cities. It's a place where half the population is from another country, where over 140 languages are spoken by 2.8 million residents, and where no one ever seems to be too busy to be helpful. In June, at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, global leaders pledged $1.2 billion of the estimated $1.5 billion required to end polio. However, Rotary's work continues. We're now working to raise $50 million a year and to ensure that global leaders make good on this summer's pledges. From the Rotary Calendar District Newsletter Issue 2/3 – August/September 2017 Page 8 September Basic Education and Literacy Month Did you know that more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate? That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population. Rotary aims at strengthening the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults. Rotary members invest in the future by giving scholarships to students who have the potential to change our communities. We share our knowledge and experience with educators and other professionals who work with vulnerable populations. And, Rotary members fight adult illiteracy by working with local advocates to offer community literacy programs. The Rotary Foundation supports education through scholarships, donations, and service projects around the world. Rotary members make amazing things happen, like:  Opening schools  Teaching adults to read  Teaching educators to use new teaching methods  Making schools healthy Our great district 2452 is proud of its Lebanese members who are providing clean, fresh water to every public school in Lebanon so students can be healthier and get a better education. “Water project unites Lebanon clubs across all divides”. Across our district there are other equally important projects that promote Basic Education and Literacy in diverse ways, from donating refurbished bikes to Jordanian children to reach the nearest school, to the supply of uniforms or books to underprivileged schools and political refugees in Cyprus and many more. It is extremely important that clubs in 2452 continue to develop projects to support Basic Education and Literacy, particularly through Global Grants and to help spread the word about Rotary’s efforts to support education. This project was a col- laboration with Aldo stores in Bahrain City Centre and the Rotary club of Sulmaniya. The press conference was held on 5th December 2016 in the Aldo Stores in City center where the club members and Aldo store staff explained the event to the local press. District 2452 News District Newsletter Issue 2/3 – August/September 2017 Page 13 District 2452 Proud Host of a Presidential Peace Conference An interview with the chair of the Organising Committee, PDG Jamil Mouawad Our district is, one of six worldwide, chosen by RI to host a Presidential Peace Conference in the current Rota- ry year. We are proud for being chosen and we are doubly proud that our fellow Rotarians in Lebanon are hosting the conference in Beirut. We considered it imperative that in this edition of the newsletter we in- clude an interview with the chair of the organising committee, PDG Jamil Mouawad, on the conference, so that all Rotarians in the district are well informed, well in advance, and know how to register. You may read the interview here. What is the significance of a Presidential Peace Conference on water, sanitation, hygiene and peace especially in our district ? Clean water and sanitation is a human right. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they become healthier and a cycle of positive changes occurs, like: poverty reduc- tion, socio-economic development, drop in illness and death from diseases. However, many countries are challenged to provide these basic necessities to their populations, leaving people at risk for water, sanita- tion, and hygiene (WASH)-related diseases. Sufficient and better quality drinking-water and basic sanitation, combined with teaching good hygiene prac- tices in schools and encouraging children to demonstrate good hygiene to their families and community is one method to cut the toll of lives lost dramatically. “A school is a place where children should feel safe, not a place where they are susceptible to infection,” says Lizette Burgers, senior adviser of UNICEF’s Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Schools program.  Rotary members are providing communities with sustainable access to safe water, improved sanitation, hygiene management training.  Rotary doesn’t just build wells and walk away.

It will highlight WATER situations in schools and among schoolchildren. It will address WATER education among communities, down to the grassroots level. It will simultaneously hold a project fair showcasing best practices in water and water-related projects particularly in schools and featuring a space for discussions among present and prospective stakeholders. At the end of this healthy exchange, it is the conference’s objective to produce concrete actions from the conference participants towards the betterment of man’s precious resource, WATER. Why will the conference be held in Lebanon? Rotary President Ian Riseley selected Lebanon to hold the \"Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Presidential Peacebuilding Conference\" because of the importance and huge impact to the Community of the Lebanese Mega Project for \" Securing Clean Drinking Water in Lebanese Public Schools \". The Conference will be held under the auspices of the President of the Lebanese Republic, General Michel Aoun at the Phoenicia Hotel, Beirut; on Friday, 16 February 2018 at 18:00, followed by a full day seminar on Saturday, 17 February and the program features prominent and expert speakers in the field of Water and Peacebuilding. We close with departures and optional sightseeing on Sunday, 18 February. Rotary Lebanon Club’s Project “Securing Clean Drinking Water in Lebanese Public Schools” Almost one and a half year ago the Rotary Clubs of Lebanon kicked off with the project “Securing Clean Drinking Water in Lebanese Public Schools”. The objective of this project is to Provide Water Filtration Systems to all Public Schools in Lebanon. Due to the existing corroded water pipes, the nearby sewage pipes, the inefficiency of water treatment on a governmental level and cuts in electricity causing back pressure, schools do not receive clean water. High microbial count and the presence of enteric bacteria are proof of water contamination. Efficient water filtration systems can reverse the equation and provide potable water to Lebanese public schools. In order to offer full benefits to the students and school personnel, paying special attention to sustainability will be an integral part of this project. It is essential to train the trainers on maintaining the system, changing cartridges and UV lamps, as well as on spreading awareness of the importance of drinking clean water, cleaning hands and using water efficiently. All of these items will be essential to the project. The main beneficiaries are students, teachers, school administrators and personnel, and in some schools, the Syrian refugee students who come to attend a second shift of dedicated afternoon courses. To have more impact on the community and in order to give full actual benefit, we are also spreading awareness on the importance of: 1.Consuming and Using Clean Water 2.Conserving water in our daily life 3.Maintaining the Personal hygiene and how it effects each one’s health These goals are being met through TV Commercials, Print works, social media messages, how-to showings, and interactive workshops with the students in each area in Lebanon. The water project workshops are being handled by specialists in this field and in collaboration with the Education and Health Ministries.
