DG Christina’s Monthly Message District Newsletter Issue 4 – October 2017 Page 2 Dear Fellow Rotarians of our Great District 2452, We are well into the month of October and later this month we will be celebrating ENDPOLIO Day. Rotary’s Most ambitious project is approaching the end and it is our collective obligation to support it to the final day. So, on the 24th October, if you haven’t yet planned your POLIO event, make sure you even at this late date that it is the major subject in your club meeting, in your social circle, in your community, on a billboard, in the Media and your social networking. If every single of the 1,200,000 Rotarians, or every single of the 33,000 clubs in the world do something on POLIO DAY, imagine the impact on the planet. On the other hand, I’m well into my club visit schedule to the clubs, already over my first trip to Lebanon, and my visit to UAE. Meeting Rotarians and visiting their projects makes me feel the power of service we hold in our hands singularly and collectively. I am a very strong believer that whatever we give to the world the Universe will send it back to us. As Rotarians we should practice patience our common cause to serve Humanity. Practice tolerance and respect towards our fellow Rotarian volunteers. Join our individual personal skills and sacrifice some our precious time because it is the only way we can have successful clubs and do successful projects that really ‘Make a Difference’. SAVE THE DATE!!! DISTRICT ROTARY FOUNDATION SEMINAR LARNACA, CYPRUS, 1-3 DECEMBER 2017
Rotary International News District Newsletter Issue 4 – October 2017 Page 3 Presidential message - October 2017 Ian H.S. Riseley President 2017 Some years ago in the Melbourne, Australia, museum where my daughter used to work, an iron lung was on display. For most people my age who remembered the terrifying polio epidemics of the 1950s, that iron lung was a testament to how far vaccination had brought us: to the point where that once-critical piece of medical equipment had literally become a museum piece. For much of the world, the story of polio is a simple one: After years of fear, a vaccine was developed and a disease was conquered. But for some of the world, the story was different. In so many countries, the vaccine wasn’t available, mass vaccination was too expensive, or children simply couldn’t be reached. While the rest of the world relegated polio to its museums, in these countries, the disease continued to rage – until Rotary stepped forward and said that all children, no matter where they lived or what their circumstances, deserved to live free of polio. In the years since PolioPlus was launched, the combined efforts of Rotary, the governments of the world, and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative have brought the number of cases of polio down from an estimated 350,000 per year to just a few so far in 2017. But we must reach zero cases, and stay there, to achieve eradication. To do that, we need everyone’s help. On 24 October, we will mark World Polio Day. It is a day to celebrate how far we have come and an opportunity for all of us to raise awareness and funds to complete the work of eradication. I ask every Rotary club to participate in some way in World Polio Day activities, and I encourage you to visit endpolio.org for ideas and to register your event. Whether you host a silent auction, a virtual reality viewing, a fundraising walk, or a Purple Pinkie Day, your club can make a real difference. This year, our World Polio Day livestream event will take place at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation headquarters in Seattle; you can watch it on endpolio.org beginning at 2:30 p.m. Pacific time. As many of you know, Rotary has committed to raising $50 million a year for the next three years. This amount will be matched 2-to-1 by the Gates Foundation – effectively tripling the value of all money Rotary raises on World Polio Day and throughout the year. Let’s all make a difference on World Polio Day – and help End Polio Now. Meet President Ian Riseley President Ian’s Theme Speech

Rotary International News District Newsletter Issue 4 – October 2017 Page 6 Rotary finds a new partner for peace Rotary is forming a strategic partnership with the Institute for Economics and Peace, a leader in the study of peace and conflict. Together, we will create new learning oppor- tunities for Rotary members. Rotary will work with the institute to create an online learning platform, with webinars and interactive tools, that members and Rotary Peace Fellows can use to increase their expertise. Rotary and the institute will also devel- op workshops in “positive peace,” a concept that says we can build peace by identifying and measuring the attitudes, institutions, and structures that create and sustain peaceful societies and fostering them elsewhere. These workshops will be funded by global grants and hosted by Rotary clubs. More information about how you can get involved will be available in the coming months. Read More The Rotary Club of Stone Mountain in Georgia, USA, was facing a common problem: membership was aging, and the club struggled to attract younger members. When Past President Margie Kersey learned that Rotary had changed membership rules to remove the barriers be- tween e-clubs and regular clubs, they became a hy- brid club, preserving in-person meetings while also mak- ing them available online. From the Rotary Calendar District Newsletter Issue 4 – October 2017 Page 7 October Economic and Community Development Month OUR IMPACT ON LOCAL ECONOMIES Did you know that nearly 800 million people live on less than $1.90 a day? 795 million people — or 1 in 9 people in the world — do not have enough to eat. 60% of the world’s hungry people are women and girls. 70% of the world’s poorest people live in rural areas and depend on agriculture and related activities for their livelihood. The Rotary Foundation spent $9.2 m. last year to grow local economies and reduce poverty. Rotary members are passionate about providing sustainable solutions to poverty. Our members and our Foundation work to strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities. We provide training and access to well-paying jobs and financial management institutions. Rotary members train people to become resources for their community, offering networking activities, advice on new business development, and mathematics and financial management training. Rotarians make amazing things happen, like: Breaking the cycle of poverty for women: Most of the women living in rural Guatemala do not have the collateral to get loans from regulated financial institutions. The Rotary Club of Guatemala de la Ermita helped 400 local women complete financial literacy courses so they could pool their money and fund their own microlending program. Skills development, business training: In Esmeraldas, Ecuador, Rotary members MICROLOANS helped grant more than 250 microloans and train more than 270 community members in sewing, baking, plumbing, microcredit, business management, and leadership. Sustainable farming: In west Cameroon, soil erosion and loss of soil fertility have significantly reduced farmers’ harvests. Rotary members gave farmers the skills they needed to improve soil fertility, control soil erosion, and market their produce. The results: increased crop yields and profits. District 2452 News District Newsletter Issue 4 – October 2017 Page 8 District Grants Management Seminar & Assembly of the Rotary Clubs of Cyprus On Saturday the 9th of September 2017 the Cyprus Rotary was honored to host in Nicosia a District Grants Management Seminar with 77 participants and with some great Rotarian speakers from Lebanon. The esteemed speakers were DRFC Jamil Mouawad, DDG Ahmad Husseini and AG Chawkat Houalla. Their extensive experience and knowhow to pursue the Rotary Global grants was evident throughout their presentation. They led their audience through a step by step procedure, making it easy and clear for everyone to follow. We were particularly fortunate because our District Web Master PP Nicos Apostolides and PP David Zein had successfully run a live stream connection across the 9 countries of District 2452. The program was followed by our keynote speaker PP Paul Edde – Chairman of the Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon. His presentation was a unique powerful blend of real life experiences. He draws his passion and strength from real personal conviction and real vision for the future and has strong faith in one’s potential; therefore, he preached to us that when there is “faith and commitment nothing is beyond the realm of possibilities” He was a real power force of motivation to all present. DG Christina Covotsou-Patroclou brief us on the endowment fund to be established in memory of our late PDGs Mustafa Nasereddin and Usama Barghouthi, as well as on the District Policy Manual. The agenda of the day continued by the approval of 2016/17 accounts presented by PDDG Iacovos Constantinides & 2016-17 Country Treasurer PP Nicos Theodoulou. In her presentation on “Our Year Together” DDG Elena Tanou stressed the importance of attracting young members and suggested ways to approach them. She paid special attention to the environmental issue and suggested ways for all Cyprus clubs to adopt parks, plant trees at school “shade at schools”, and conserve water and energy in partnership with the Cyprus Hotels Association. The budget of 2017/18 was presented by the Country Treasurer Rtn Lakis Papakyriacou and was approved by the Cyprus Assembly. The whole event ended at 2:00pm with everybody departing in good spirit to continue their Rotary Year full of energy and good vibes. Elena Tanou DDG for Cyprus 2017-18

The Model United Nations conferences (MUN) are academic conferences where participants from across the world, assume the role of representing a country and debate in formal sessions current political, social and eco- nomic issues. MUNs represent an opportunity to learn how to influence decision-making at international level. Following the historical structure of the United Nations mechanism and its procedures, Rotaract Global MUN aims to bring young people’s solutions to global problems on the UN desk. To achieve this dream, RGMUN pro- motes excellence in education, professionalism in organization and integrity in performance. Participants accumulate strong knowledge of global issues, but most importantly master: the art of negotia- tion, public speaking, influencing at top levels, using the official UN language and using the procedural mecha- nisms set in motion by the UN.
District Newsletter Issue 4 – October 2017 District 2452 News Page 10 …Rotaract Global Model United Nations Conference Rotaract Global MUN transcends from a mere simulation to an actual youth decision-making process. It intro- duces the concept of Rapporteur Office whose goal is to ensure that the conference outcomes are presented, edited and transmitted in a clear and concise manner to the world and the regional and international decision- making bodies. Besides the chance to get trained as a young diplomat, RGMUN grants you the opportunity to explore different cultures and test your interpersonal and intercultural The Conference that was attended by around 100 par- ticpants was host to Rotaract members and university students form 15 different countries: United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Romania, Bulgaria, Jordan, Mexico, Egypt, Liberia, Cayman Islands, Tunis, Bahrain, India, Ethi- opia, Iraq. The general theme for this year’s edition was a “Nuclear-Free world”: Striving for a world that is free of Nuclear Weapons in accordance with the United Nations 2030 Sustain- able Development Goals Agenda. During the 3 conference days three committees were simulated: The Security Council, the United Nations Envi- ronment Programme (UNEP) and the Economics and Social Council (ECOSOC). A Post-conference trip followed from the 20th till the 22nd giving the International participants a taste of the au- thentic Lebanese culture. 35 Rotaract members went on a 3 day road trip, touring major historical cities and sites from coast to mountains. The trip started at Byblos the oldest constantly inhabited city in the world, was followed by a visit to the Cedars and Oyoun Orghosh in the North of Lebanon, and finished in Zahleh with a Wine Tour after having visited the Majestic Roman Temple in Baalbeck. The success of this conference is due to Rotary District 2452, Ro- tary Lebanon, Rotary Sahel Metn, Rotaract District 2452 and Ro- taract Lebanon’s much appreciated support.
