60 CULI’s 40th Anniversary PERSONAL PERSPECTIVES On the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of CULI, I am delighted to share my memorable experiences as a longtime member of the teaching staff. During the past four decades, I have seen CULI develop into a powerhouse in ELT, a teaching institution consisting of staff of high calibre, devotion and strong commitment to English language education. All members have worked collaboratively and laboriously towards a common goal: producing effective English language communicators. Given its expanded mission, I have also seen CULI make steady progress to achieve excellence not only in teaching, but assessment, research and services to society in general. To me, CULI is a vibrant learning community in which staff, old and new, are here to share and learn from each other. I am proud to be part of this institute, having witnessed its ever-increasing growth. 62 CULI’s 40th Anniversary Working at CULI has provided me with tremendous opportunities to be engaged in a variety of challenging administrative tasks and extra-curricular activities, apart from teaching English. My strong impression about CULI is the coworkers – both teaching and support staff – and their unstinting goodwill and support for one another. There is always someone for everyone to turn to on a bad day. It is a friendly and pleasant work environment. At CULI, I have developed both hard and soft skills – lead- ership, teamwork, and problem solving abilities to name a few. As for the teaching part, I am fortunate to have a chance to meet different groups of students in various fields of study every semester. I could not have asked for a better career than being an instructor here. The major goals of CULI are to encourage sharing, growth, and development – not only of language skills and knowledge, but of people as a whole, for, after all, as author Melinda Marchetta noted, “without our language, we have lost ourselves. Who are we without our words?” These important objectives are set not only for the students whom we teach, but for those of us who work here as well. I have been part of CULI since 1999, and it has been a wonderful 18 CULI’s 40th Anniversary 63year-experience working here. Over the years I have been involved invarious kinds of duties and that is how I know how professional andhardworking CULI faculty members and staff are, while at the same timebeing caring and supportive. At CULI we work hard and we are very goodat multitasking as our work always presents new challenges. Many thingshave changed since the day I started working here and there will alwaysbe more changes to come, but one thing that remains the same is thatwe all will continue to work hard and know that our achievements dependon our cooperation and teamwork. Chatraporn Piamsai Full-time instructor (1999-present)My life at CULI started 8 years ago on the 1st of May, Labor Day inThailand. So many colleagues mocked jokingly that I must be workingvery hard for sure. And yes, it is true. I do. We all do! But it’s not in anonerous way at all. CULI’s staff includes many intelligent, collegial andcaring people and that’s what’s good about it as there are many people Ican learn from. Turning 40 this year, CULI has experienced its ups anddowns. For me, if CULI were a person, it would be a kind-hearted parentwho lets me try things on my own while watching my back, who tells meconstructively when I’m wrong, and offers opportunities for me to reachthe world through the medium of English. 64 CULI’s 40th Anniversary Having worked here for almost two years, I would say that I am very fortunate to be a member of CULI and grateful for all the great opportunities CULI has offered to me. I have learned and experienced a number of wonderful things I would not have been able to if I had not joined this organization. Effective teamwork, academic excellence, and integrity are some of the values that I have come to appreciate and hold dear since I started working here. Most recently, I was sponsored by CULI to attend the 52nd RELC International Conference from March 13-15, 2017 in Singapore, where I had an opportunity to explore new research trends and teaching perspectives which I can apply to my teaching and research. On the very special occasion of CULI’s 40th anniversary, I would like to extend my most sincere congratulations to every CULI lecturer and staff member who has tirelessly and diligently contributed to the success of Chulalongkorn University Language Institute. Seehhazzakd Rojanaapichatsakul Full-time instructor (2016-present) When I first heard of CULI, I was not quite certain of what to expect. I had heard people speak positively of Chulalongkorn University whenever I had been in Thailand. However, I was unsure as to how things would compare with universities and teaching philosophies in Australia. After a few months at CULI, things started to become clearer. After a year, I realised how extensive the range of courses offered was and how talented the group of teachers on staff. Most striking was the diversity of the courses, from English for medical and law students, through to those specifically for pharmacy, architecture and business. It is a testimony to the professionalism and skill of all CULI’s teachers that such a curriculum is not only designed and delivered, but done so very well. Coming to CULI from having worked at Wall Street -Thailand was a CULI’s 40th Anniversary 65pretty big change for me. I went directly from teaching small groups ofoffice workers at Wall Street’s corporate centers to teaching large groupsof young adults here at Chula. It was a transition that took a little gettingused to but I soon came to appreciate both the challenges and rewardsthat teaching at university offers. I feel fortunate to have the opportunityto teach English in such a wide range of contexts and to students ofvarious majors. I also appreciate the support I’ve received from coworkersat CULI. Whenever I’ve had questions, staff, both teaching and support,have always taken time out of their busy day to assist. Such support andthe overall experience of teaching at Chulalongkorn University has helpedkeep the experience fresh for me – so much so that it’s hard to believethat I’ve now been working here for 10 years. Richard Lemarie International instructor (2007-present)Teaching is accompanied by learning and at the Chulalongkorn UniversityLanguage Institute, we are involved in a variety of faculties thatpresent us with challenges. Those I have encountered are mitigated bythe incredible people I work with thanks to the spirit of teamwork andshared goals of inspiring and motivating students. Working with both Thaiand International teachers not only makes our responsibilities manageablebut opens doors to new learning opportunities.When I joined CULI, one of the challenges we faced was the students’reluctance to engage in conversation in English. The Self Access LearningCenter is a testimony to how collaboration and dedication among CULIteachers and staff can lead to change. Starting with “Conversation Hour”,the number of activities and the amount of student participation increased.After a couple of years, some who had participated returned to say “thankyou”, having been accepted to study abroad with language skills andconfidence improved.This is just one of the rewards of teaching at CULI. 66 CULI’s 40th Anniversary Congratulations to the Chulalongkorn University Language Institute (CULI) on its 40th anniversary. I joined CULI in 1981 when CULI was one of the first university-based English language institutes. Since then, CULI has pioneered English language teaching. The institute also plays a seminal role in professional development of teachers throughout Thailand. CULI was instrumental in establishing Thailand TESOL, Thailand’s only association for English language teaching professionals. Professor Toemsakdi Krishnamra, then Director of CULI, was the association’s first President. At CULI’s annual conferences, teachers learn about global trends in English language instruction. CULI has received numerous grants from the Office of the Higher Education Commission and Regional English Language Office of the US to support local/regional projects, including symposia/seminars with leading universities and the Lower Mekong Initiative English project. I wholeheartedly congratulate CULI for its contributions to English language education. I urge the Institute to continue along this bright path. I have learned a lot working for CULI: individualization – a form of programmed learning with the provision of self-pacing, communicative approach, self-access learning, standardized tests, experiential English etc., to name a few, whatever is the name of the game at that point. CULI then gave me the opportunities to try my ideas and make myself useful teaching, and working on test-writing and translation service assignments. Without CULI support, I definitely would not have learned as much. CULI was also where I met many valuable friends and colleagues, young and old. I have now retired, but considering how much time one spends at work, CULI has undoubtedly been a big part of my life. I also have to say ‘a big happy part.’ In this way, how can I not love CULI and have only the best wishes for CULI as the institute as well as for all those working for CULI always. Part-time teaching at CULI has been one of the happiest activities for me CULI’s 40th Anniversary 71since my early retirement in 2012. Like all lecturers, I like seeing mystudents having fun while studying a variety of topics. Many of my studentsare very hardworking and try to finish assignments such as the onlinediagnostic test and SALC activities early. Class discussion is the mostenjoyable part of the lesson for them so we usually spend most time onthat. It can be difficult to move on to the next part of the lesson when thestudents keep raising their hands, wanting to share their ideas. The mostbeautiful thing about being in the classroom is that the students can laughand enjoy themselves even when they cannot answer correctly. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join the Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) English Project: Professional Communication Skills for Leaders on the topic of environment organized by the Chulalongkorn University Language Institute (CULI) in collaboration with the Regional English Language Office of the US Embassy in Thailand to help me with this. The course has helped me improve my English skills as well as provided me with knowledge of procedures and techniques on how to make a proper presentation and present proposals at an international conference. In addition, I’d really like to thank all the teachers of CULI for their effective teaching and the friendly atmosphere. While taking the courses, I could recognize that my English communication skill was improving every day. Apart from that, CULI gave me the great opportunity of sharing my professional experience with the students in “Career Talk” – one of the special activities of the CULI English Club. For forty years, this gigantic tree has branched out and stood in stability with its roots spreading deep into the soil. Sometimes, this tree has been through storms, downpours, and droughts. Yet, it remains upright and strong, being a protecting shelter for birds, squirrels, and any passers-by. Likewise, CULI has long performed its duty with a strong will and determination for the utmost benefit of the society and it will continue this responsibility forever. Somkiat Panyameepholkit Support Staff, SALC (1980-present) The Chulalongkorn University Language Institute (CULI) is a great resource for English language instruction and possesses highly capable instructors. It is widely known in Thailand due to its outstanding academic achievements including CU-TEP, a well-known English proficiency test, the Self-Access Learning Center (SALC), which was a pioneer of its kind, and the English development project titled “Sustainable Si Chang” which supports local people in Chonburi. In addition, CULI is blessed with teaching and non-teaching staff who have great integrity, capability, and efficiency. 76 CULI’s 40th Anniversary It’s 24 years now since I started working here at CULI. My first day was totally different from a typical day today. Then the State Personnel Development Center, under the supervision of the Research Department, arranged only one to two projects a year. After a while, I realized that I would not be able to grow in my career without love for what I was doing. This caused me to change from being an unmotivated employee to a very dedicated one, aiming to work harder and make my work more systematic. From that turning point, CULI became my second home as I started working early in the morning until late at night. Now CULI is much more prosperous in all respects whether in terms of academic programs, research or extra academic services. It has also assembled a huge number of highly capable staff. As part of the institute, I am always determined to work at my best and contribute to the growth of CULI. It’s because of CULI’s support that I have developed professionally. I congratulate all CULI staff for our success. Apart from my two main responsibilities mentioned, I also assisted other units and departments, especially when there was a shortage of staff or when CULI was organizing an important event. For example, over two decades ago when computers were not available, I helped the staff in the Distribution Unit to manually write receipts for students. I also helped prepare materials for national seminars and international conferences. Nowadays, CULI has more staff members and is more modern and well-equipped with high technology. However, one thing that never changes is the helpfulness of all staff members working together. 78 CULI’s 40th Anniversary Since its establishment on 7th November 1977, with an original mission “to provide English language instruction and training as well as conduct research related to the Thai and the English languages”, CULI has greatly developed its role. It has provided courses to correspond to various needs of faculties in Chulalongkorn University. In addition, it also caters to a variety of functions for both government and the private sectors. One highlight is the initiation of proficiency tests under two well-known names, the “CU-TEP” and “CULI Test”. With a strong foundation and expertise as a leading institute in testing and assessment, I hope to see CULI developing its test bank which can respond to the needs of all stakeholders in Thailand. Similarly to other teaching institutes challenged by ever changing global circumstances and the advancement of technology, I wish to see CULI continue motivating and strengthening their teaching and support staff over the long term to enhance and make an even stronger academic contribution. Puth Seesopaporn Retired Support staff Former Administrative Director (1982-2016) I have seen continuous progress at CULI over the years. It originally started as a project of the Planning and Development Department of Chulalongkorn University. It later became an English language center and merged with the Central Institute of the English Language (CIEL) of Ministry of University Affairs. Eventually, it was established as the “Chulalongkorn University Language Institute”. CULI provides English language instruction to both undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, it is well-known for its Self-Access Learning Center and as a center of English language academic resources. Dating back 40 years, CULI started as a small sprout. All of the staff has helped water, weed and fertilize, to cultivate and strengthen it. All share the same goal to see this plant grow and be fruitful year after year. Now, CULI is like a deep-rooted tree of Chulalongkorn University which has contributed greatly to Thailand’s educational institutions and its contribution will last forever. 80 CULI’s 40th Anniversary My Impression of Let’s Chat The aspect of Let’s Chat that impressed me the most was the sincerely supportive intention behind the activity; the Language Institute’s collective desire for students to improve their English through self-directed learning tools in the SALC. When I first heard about it, I wondered if it was necessary since there were already so many other English activities for students to choose from. However, when I participated as one of the student assistants in the activity, I realized that having students of more or less the same age conduct Let’s Chat was what set it apart from other English activities which often involved instructors. In this manner, I believe Let’s Chat allowed students to open up more, dare to make mistakes, and apply their English skills in a practical way without reserve. Indeed, it was truly moving to meet many fellow students and witness their self-driven initiative to master English. I felt like English was not important for me and that I wasn’t good at it. Then in my fourth year, I realized that I wasn’t able to communicate with foreigners, which really matters for my future. As a result, I started practicing and coming to CULI, which really helped me to improve my English skills. I went to SALC to do all of the activities that they had. The teachers and staff were so nice and kind to me. They always gave me wonderful advice. I registered in 2 English courses in my last semester. I did my best and it paid off. This made me realize that if I try as hard as I can, I can accomplish anything. While studying at CULI, the teachers never got tired of giving me help on my pronunciation, writing, presentations, mock exams, resume writing and how to make a great interview—even though they sometimes scolded me for being late. 82 CULI’s 40th Anniversary Growing up in America during my early years gave me an edge in English competency when compared to my Thai peers. Quite often scoring top of the class during high school, I became a bit cocky. It was not until I entered Chulalongkorn University and found out that my English was just a little bit above standard but still lacked writing skills. Thanks to CULI teachers and their curriculum, I got back on track. Thus, CULI played an essential part in bringing me to where I am today. Then, in early 2017, Chulalongkorn University selected me to be host of the CU on the Road English-language quiz show which presented the chance to work with CULI staff again. This reconfirmed to me the devotion and inspiration of CULI staff. Thank you again.
