MISS HELLENE 2014 | 55I am 23 years old and, while I currently reside in Johannesburg, I am originally fromThessaloniki in Greece. Professionally I am a psychologist, however, I am continuing mystudies in industrial psychology. My hobbies include crossfit, basketball, and anything that is sports or car related. My friends and family describe me as a classic stubborn Spartan who has a hugeheart and likes to surround herself with a lot of friends. My mother is originally fromSparta and Scotland but born in America, while my father is originally from Serres.I heard about this competition mostly from my friends and the launch party in Pretoria. However, the only reason that I decided to take part in a competition of this kind is thefact that it assists individuals from the Greek community to have a chance at highereducation. I truly believe that helping others achieve their goals is truly fulfilling. Secondly, what intrigued me so much about this competition was the fact that I had to work and studyat the same time so that I could assist in the payment of my own university fees, and thusmaking this subject close to my heart. If I have the chance to represent the Greek community as Miss Hellene I would simplyencorporate my skills to take care of any responsibility that might be at hand. Multitaskingis my second nature and I have learned over the years to use all my energy to solve anyproblem that comes my way.

MISS HELLENE 2014 | 63Contestant Meet & Greet Excitement and euphoria pulsed through my veins as I neared Metro Restaurant in Sandton. This day had finally come. The day we got to meet each contestant of the pageant and the Miss Hellene committee. Although there were some nerves leading up to the Meet and Greet event, being greeted by the smiling faces of the committee made any apprehension disappear in an instant. They were welcoming and pleasant. My eyes scoured the restaurant and fell upon a table where a group of girls sat chatting animatedly with each other. I didn’t know any of them, but we already had so much in common. We were all in the same boat – every single one of us was of Hellenic descent and we had entered Miss Hellene for a common cause – a cause to promote Hellenism amongst the youth. We were all chosen because the committee knew that we would best embody the virtues of a Miss Hellene finalist. As I greeted everyone at the table, I could sense that each girl was just as excited as I was. As the day progressed, we were given our black Miss Hellene tops into which we had changed. We had also received an abundance of food which had ALL been eaten 20 minutes later (it’s no secret that Greeks and Cypriots love to eat). After lunch we were directed to the couches where the contestants received more information about what it means to be a Miss Hellene finalist and the funds we would raise for charity. However, the most notable part of the day was taking the individual and group photos. I personally have never had my photo taken professionally so it was a really new experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. The group photos indicated how we would vibe together as a group of contestants and needless to say, the energy between us was incredible. It was friendly, relaxed and we all clicked really well together. The Meet and Greet event was the starting point of the most remarkable adventure we have ever embarked on thus far. I can sense that it will not only push us to be the best version of ourselves, but it will also provide us with wonderful memories. I look forward to travelling this journey with the other girls and seeing what else Miss Hellene has in store for us. Christina Zachos Miss Hellene 2014 Contestant

MISS HELLENE 2014 | 71Contestant Fun DayWhat could possibly be more exciting than meeting ten other Miss Hellene contestants? Howabout a whole day of fun activities with them! On 26 July our committee planned a “Miss HelleneFun Day” to give the contestants the opportunity to bond and get to know each other a littlebetter after initially meeting a few weeks earlier. The instructions given were to meet at the GreekSporting Club and to take a pair of socks. Of course we all had our guesses as to what our funactivity was going to be but nevertheless, we came prepared...or at least that’s what we thought.Once we arrived, we got straight to business as the president of NAHYSOSA, Michail Scholiadiscalled us contestants in five by five to be interviewed on air at the Hellenic Radio Station.I was lucky enough to be part of the first group as we received generally “easy” questionsunlike the second group who were caught a bit off guard when they had to answer to “whatwould you do if you woke up as a boy?” However, the shy sides of us Miss Hellene ladies wereexposed as we found ourselves giggling more than talking. Now, what would a fun day be without food? And we all know there is nothing better than Greekfood! Our next stop on our fun filled day was Mythos in Bedford Centre for lunch. We enjoyedthis time bonding and sharing stories with each other across the table but at the back of ourminds we were all still wondering why we needed to bring socks? The moment arrived wherewe found out... We were going bowling! As we walked down to the bowling alley we had allagreed on the decision we have to play with the rails up, until we saw a sign saying “Railings onlyfor children under 12.” But we got away with it anyway! (Not that it helped). Here another sideof the ladies came out as we saw some bowling pros and some very funny moves somewherein between picking up the bowling ball and letting it go. Our champion for the day was noneother than the president himself and of course there is no need to mention who came last. Overall, it was a fun day contributing to our journey as the 2014 Miss Hellene contestants and when I look back at this journey, I remember this fun day as a day full of laughs and beautiful smiles, but most importantly as a day dedicated to the formation of new friendships. MISS HELLENE 2014 | 79Contestant Weekend Away “Three and a half hours,” they said. Four hours into the trip: “We’re on dirt road, surely we’re close now!” “Look, we’re turning, are we here? ”Five hours later, we finally arrived – with barely any cellphone signal, but enough for the girls to be getting SMS’s welcoming them to Botswana! We were all immediately amazed at how beautiful the venue was. Staying together under one roof, like one BIG GREEK family, the Ferreror Rocher cake that came along for the trip was placed for all eyes to see on the main table. First on the agenda was swimwear and formal wear fittings. We were handed our formal dresses one by one and were taken aback by how elegant, intricate and stunning each of them were. On Saturday morning, straight after breakfast, the hard work began with professional make-up for each girl to match the dresses. Photoshoots began and each contestant got their ‘money shot’ with the extremely helpful Thalia (2012 Miss Hellene), our incredible photographer, Sergio and our one-of-a-kind committee. Before we knew it, lunch was served, which meant we were on to the second part of the day and our make-up was transformed with face painting to match our “Out of Africa” theme for swimwear. As we wrapped up, everyone rushed back to our house to practice their speeches, and what did we find? Three Ferrero Rochers missing from the top of the cake – which was probably a bigger dilemma than learning our speeches! (Raphaella, Irini and Zoe - we all know who the culprits are now!) The night ended the way any Greek event should – with a party! We were entertained by the amazing Rosanna, dancing anything from zembekika, to traditional Greek dancing, with a bit of Ice Ice Baby and Mandoza thrown in. After the festivities, we decided that the only way to cover up the missing Ferrero Rochers was to finish the entire cake. The perfect midnight snack! On the last day, we were treated with a game drive, for a real feel of Africa. We selfie’d with white lions and got up close and personal with Remo, the cheetah, yet the best part was still awaiting us. We drove all the way to the top of the hill and experienced the most breath-taking view. Miles and miles of land stretched out in front of us, ending only because our eyes couldn’t see further. It was the perfect way to end a weekend none of us will ever forget. Callie Bofilatos Miss Hellene 2014 Contestant

100 | MISS HELLENE 2014 EditorN'soteThere is nothing more fulfilling than being a part of an organisation such as NAHYSOSA. Thereis nothing more fulfilling than being able to contribute to the difference in someone else’s life. There is nothing more fulfilling than actually realising WHOSE life you are making a difference to.This will have been my third year on NAHYSOSA, and in all honesty they have beensome of the best years of my short life. From the newbie in my first year, learning theropes in my second and now the ripest of the lot in my third, I have not only grown asan individual but I have also learnt some life lessons for which I will forever be grateful.NAHYSOSA is a student organisation that grants bursaries to students. In my opinion, this is thegreatest gift that anyone could ask for. However, NAHYSOSA not only assists in education, but creates opportunity. The opportunity that I speak of is not in the schooling sense; it is theopportunity to find friendship. This organisation opens the door to a multitude of chancesnationwide and to long lasting friendships beyond the bounds of our own neighbourhoods. The Miss Hellene pageant this year has been the hardest feat that my committee and I haveever come across. Not only did we want to have the most successful event to date, but wealso wanted our 11 contestants to be able to walk away from this event with the feelingof satisfaction; the satisfaction that they achieved any task that was thrown at them, thesatisfaction that they were able to contribute to a difference in the lives of others, and finally, the satisfaction that they were able to compete with their heads held high, promoting Hellenism.“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” – William ShakespeareBe the greatest you can be ladies, and I wish you all the best of luck in the final leg of yourwonderful journey!
