Internati onal Day of Yoga The International Day of Yoga is celebrated with much fervour every year on June 21. The theme for the International day of Yoga this year is ‘Yoga for Wellness’. Yoga is an invaluable gift of the ancient Indian tradition. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit which means ‘unite’.  Yoga is all about spiritual, mental and physical development. It is about having a healthy mind and soul in a healthy body. Yoga focusses more on relaxing rather than exercising. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic , the International day of Yoga was celebrated virtually at St. Patrick’s Academy. All the students actively participated on the yoga day. The PE teacher, Ms. Deepa shared a video about the importance of yoga in our daily life. The video included ‘Surya Namaskar’ and a few simple ‘asanas’ or postures. The students also reciprocated by sharing the images and videos of  practising  various yoga postures. Ms. Deepa P.B Webinars!!! A couple of very informative and enlightening webminars were organized by the Kariyad Residents Association in collaboration with St. Patrick’s Academy, Angamaly. The first session ‘ Let’s Talk To The Expert – Dr. Soly Manuel ’ was organized on June 13,2021. It was our privilege to share a common platform with Dr. Soly Manuel who is a Pediatrician and Neonatologist at Little Flower Hospital, Angamaly. The event was organized to clear the doubts about the upcoming third wave of Covid-19 pandemic as there was a widespread rumour that the third wave would mainly affect the children. Dr. Soly patiently listened to all the queries put up by the parents and cleared their doubts. Be alert and aware of the situation to handle it was her message to the listeners. The second event was conducted on July 4,2021 which focused on  ‘Cyber Space’. We were fortunate to have Mr. Thalhath P.M, a gold medalist and an officer currently working at Cyber Police Department, Ernakulam Rural, addressing us about the over use of digital media and its after effect – growth in cybercrime. The session was very enriching as Mr. Thalhath P.M explained the pros and cons of the usage of smart phones and other electronic gadgets. We all know that this is a virtual era where by our children are subjected to unlimited usage of internet facilities which in turn is victimizing a few of them as they get indulged in cybercrimes  either accidently or forcefully. The expert also threw light on the handling of fraudulent calls which is nothing but a trap to withdraw money from our bank accounts. Mr. Thalhath brought into the notice of the listeners a few of the cybercrimes that took place recently and how it could have been avoided with a little more awareness. In a nutshell, both the sessions were really very informative and very much appreciated by the parents and guardians of SPA. Ms. Sangeeta Nair

75th INDEPENDENCE DAY  CELEBRATION   A Salute to our Mother Land! 'Freedom is something that money can’t  buy, it is the result of the struggles of many brave hearts.' SPA is not a place where Patricians are confined in the four walls of home. Even in this pandemic situation of COVID -19, the students of SPA  celebrated the 75th  Independence day of our motherland with deep patriotic fervour and enthusiasm. Our promising artists presented a mélange of patriotic programmes in a different way. To commemorate the sovereignty of our nation, our Principal unfurled the tricolor flag. The special prayer, rhythmic patriotic song, graceful dance which exhibited ‘Unity in Diversity’ and a skit which portrayed the events till 1947 marked the uniqueness of    the independence celebration of senior Patricians. Principal  Rev.Bro. Dennis Joseph spoke on the significance of the historic day.   The tiny tots of SPA junior block remembered the sacrifice of freedom fighters with gratitude. The nutshell of the cause of Independence Day celebration was conveyed through a small skit. Prayer dance, a melodious patriotic song, a tableau on freedom fighters along with a blend of Punjabi and Western dances were the highlights of the celebration. Indeed it was a memorable day which aroused patriotic feelings and threw light to the patriotic spirit to become ideal citizens of the country. It was a reverent bow before the great leaders who shed their health, wealth  and family for a great cause. Ms Jiji Baby

Onam Celebration Onam is the highlight in the festive calendar of all Keralites. Covid- 19 has shifted Onam celebrations for all of us to the virtual space. We, the SPA family,    orchestrated a series of virtual events which included the performances of students from KG to Class XII to strengthen the feeling of harmony and fraternity during these festive times. Our online Onam celebration was a colourful blend of Kerala dance forms, Onapattu, skit and Principal’s onam message. It included compiling and editing videos of individual performances and presenting it as group event. Classwise celebrations were    also organized which included online competitions like sundarikku pottu, Anthakshari, Onam Quiz, Malayalam tongue twisters etc accompanied by dance and music sessions where class teachers and students had a great fun time together. With all the stress these children face while staying at home, it’s impressive that they come up with spectacular performances. Keeping in mind the fact that these all are adaptive measures at the time of an unprecedented pandemic,we see the virtual festival as an eye opener. We now know that nothing can come in the way of teacher student bonding.                                                                                                 Ms.Jiss Shyam

Through this we could raise the status of women in all areas like education, economics and health. In western countries women empowerment is often associated with specific phases of women rights movement in history. Women should be able to stand up on her own choices. We can empower women through many ways like giving more job opportunities for women. Women are primary caretakers of children and elders in every country of the world. Without a woman’s presence, a family cannot move ahead in a proper way. Women play an important role in socio- economic and the political development of the society. For example, Nirmala Sitharaman plays an important role in Indian economy as finance minister of central government of India. There are many things a woman can do, sometimes even better when compared to men. Women have suffered a lot owing to various archaic practices, religious reasons, social cause etc. India is one of the countries where women still lack their due recognition. There are various reasons for this. Nowadays, there are so many honour killings taking    place in India . In Underdeveloped countries women still  lack the freedom  to pursue higher education. They are married off early. The men are still dominating women and considers that it’s her duty to work for him endlessly. They do not let them go out or have freedom of any kind. \"I raise my voice not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard….We cannot succeed when half of us are held back.\" -Malala Yousafsai Andrea Antony, VII B

It also introduces us to the nitty gritty of the subjects we have chosen. Well,  Indian School Certificate, ie. ISC provides us with a strong, broad base which enables the future journey easier. ISC is known to be accepted as an official educational qualification all over the world by higher education Institutions. ISC schools provide children with the best possible infrastructure and faculty. ISC syllabus is made for the students to have an overall development in areas such as academics, cultural activities, co-curricular activities and sports with events conducted each year like ISC /ICSE Cultural Meet and ISC /ICSE sports competitions. ISC also emphasizes fluency in English for students to be more articulate in English. Some foreign, especially UK based institutions give a slight preference to ISC students over students enrolled in other Indian boards. ISC syllabus gives wide variety of choices in streams, a notable one is the Humanities stream. ISC Humanities stream is for students who wish to take up a career in teaching, civil-service, social sector, fine-arts, law, journalism, Hotel-Management and many more. Humanities stream enables the student to learn the functioning of human society, system and social relations. Taking up this stream, one can pursue specialization courses like psychology, history, economics, sociology, archaeology, anthropology, etc. It is an experience worth experimenting. Th ose Little Moments Yet to Come The tinged rays of the fireball struck, There is nothing good happening, they say, The glossy bed of the frozen lake. But I always think the other way; Washing off the prominent muck, Exposing the blissful view. The beauty of sunrise, the smell of the rain, And the warmth of coffee The pointed ones hang down the tree, When we are in pain, Arresting the melting rays. The chirping of birds, the rainbow that's dyed The warblings began and the flowers were in glee, From violet to red, far up in the sky; Greeting the bright hopeful days. The vibrance of flowers, the floating of clouds, And every other thing that we see around; The frozen river resumed its path, For the never ending journey to start. These little moments we ignore today, But the rays were yet to meet the strath, Will be the ones that we will miss someday; Extending the time of their depart. They have the power to brighten your day, So please don't ignore them, you'll be in dismay. As population multiplied human beings got involved in different crimes. No doubt, inventions were made but these inventions were also misused and have created a lot of problems. Today, we have mobile phones in our pockets for communication, it’s  a great blessing for us .But at the same time it has it’s  disadvantages too. William Shakespeare says, “ There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so”. In fact, there are two aspects of everything that is good or bad. There are several educational applications that are helpful  for their school projects. It also encourages    children to improve their talents and various skills. Mobile phone assists you a lot in dealing with critical situations. Mobile phone hacking for money is a big problem that many people all around the world    are facing now a days. The impact of cell phones on children and the youth is immense as they are getting exposure to unwanted videos and video games. Studies have proven that children and teens who spend too much of their time with their cell phones are more prone to health issues : Tumors, effects brain activity, low academic performance, academic malpractice, inappropriate media, sleep disruption, medical issues and mental health. Another disadvantage of mobile phone is that you can access unlimited content that may be inadequate for us. Equanimity is calmness and composure especially in a difficult situation. It is this tranquility that has led to the successful completion of this edition. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam said, \"All fingers are not of the same length. But when they bend, all stand equal. Thus life becomes easy when we bend and adjust to all situations”. This edition of SPA Beacon is also an outcome of adjusting and adapting ourselves to the present pandemic situation. The strong determination, enthusiasm and hard work of the students was clearly reflected during the conduct of various events and online competitions. I am really fortunate to have a diligent editorial team who is ever ready to take up a task when assigned. I sincerely thank the management, our Principal Rev. Bro. Dennis Joseph and Vice Principal Rev. Bro. John Britto for their constant support, able guidance, cooperation and motivation towards the successful publishing of this newsletter. I am extremely grateful to our coordinators and teachers in-charge for their valuable contributions. I sincerely acknowledge the support of our teachers and students who penned the reports and articles and the stroke of artistic works towards this journal. God bless! Happy Reading… Ms. Sangeeta Vibin
