UPPER SCHOOL PRIZE GIVING - 2015 Chief Guest’s Speech Mr.Duminda Hulangamuwa (Partner and Head of Tax Services- Ernst and Young SriLanka) Your Lordship the Bishop of Colombo, Revered Fathers, members of the BOG , Principal Sir, teachers, distinguished invitees, parents and dear students. My wife and I are indeed privileged to be at this prestigious event at the best school of all as the chief guest. I consider this invitation of being the chief guest at this year's prize giving of Trinity as the most valued prize awarded to me by my old school. More so because I have never won any prizes myself at school and found it hard to pass the standard promotion exams year on year let alone winning prizes. I had the privilege of entering Trinity at the age of five as a boarder to what was then known as the matron's dormitory in 1971 as a third generation Trinitian following in the footsteps of my grand father and my father. However, circumstance prevented me from sending my children to Trinity and as such had to decide on the second best school by the sea in Mount Lavinia to send my children. St. omas' being built and nurtured much on similar if not the same traditions and values as Trinity it was yet a di cult decision to take my children to a school other than Trinity. Ever since your Principal invited my wife and I to be the chief guests at the prize giving I was wondering what my message is going to be to this audience of students, parents and teachers. e Principal told me to talk about my school life at Trinity and life therea er I replied to him that my life at Trinity will not inspire many a young students and the parents. To tell you frankly my schooling life at Trinity and mind you in the hostel from the age of five was filled only with mischief, fun, sport, laughter and at times with tears. I mentioned tears because I still remember as a young boarder when my parents used to drop me in the boarding a er the holidays I would see them again in three months when the term ends. at was a sad moment. I never mentioned studies because we in the hostel never studied as we never thought it was a part of going to school until such time that great maths teacher Mr. C.B.Ukuwela found and fostered my talent when I was in grade 10. However , I am proud to say that I qualified as a Chartered Accountant with a first degree in law, and my batch mates some of them practicing as best consultant doctors, architects and engineers whilst some are successful business men and the others employed overseas in lucrative employment ranging from General Motors in Michigan and so ware companies in the Silicon Valley to the ADB. Also , there are many who have not had successful careers a er leaving school but they live a dignified and happy life. I have been frank about myself but I am not advocating anyone in the audience to follow me. My message is that in hindsight to me I saw Trinity not as an institution that is wholly devoted to academic activities but as an institution that gave us an all—r0und education in academia, social service, 12

discipline and sport and produced well balanced men. To me all round education at Trinity means the spirit of humanity we learned. It is the values we are taught and learnt at school that will last forever . At Trinity we may not have been studious children but were disciplined children. When I refer to discipline I mean discipline to respect steadfastly. Discipline to respect teachers and elders, discipline to respect the other persons rights, the discipline to be timely, neat and tidy are the characteristics of discipline taught to us at Trinity. In sports we were not taught sports as an excellence to an end but as a means to one. It was team effort that was promoted and not individualism for the glory of one. Although, Trinity was founded and continues to function as a Christian missionary school living up to the true teaching s of Christianity it gave equal opportunity to children from all religions and races. As a Buddhist I had the freedom to practice my religion in a Christian environment. As much as it was to a Christian child the chapel became a part of our lives as Buddhists too. Similarly my Christian friends o en visited the Asgiriya temple on our way to the Asgiriya grounds. As mentioned by Ramya Jirasinghe in her book titled “Trinity” produced for the Colombo branch of the OBA referring to that great Principal of Trinity Rev. A.G Fraser she says Fraser believed that in order to create a Christian character in a person the students should be well grounded in the ideals of service and brotherhood. She goes on to say that Fraser believed that the medium of education, the form it took, and the spirit it endorsed mattered more than the end for which a missionary school had been established.” In the 14o years of existence of Trinity, the Sri Lankan population and society have faced many challenges of it being carved into sections based on religions, race and cast. However, in all such situations Trinity has successfully withstood such challenges. Ramya Jirasinghe in her book states I quote “ the response of the college and its students to crisis such as the riots of 1915 and 1983 demonstrates their unwavering belief in fair play, in justice and in the equality of the people. ere are values that make up the very essence of Trinity and the whole school stands for them. Yet a set of values can never be ingrained in students through class room exercises and preaching. Instead ,they need to be brought to life by providing the students with an opportunity to make decisions that uphold those principles, confronting them with moments that force them to make a choice when values conflict with a personal interest”. I appreciate and understand that today's world is fiercely competitive than it was before and more complex and would thus demand a di erent skills set to what was when we le school and ventured out to the open. We could play all time, not study at school and yet lead a successful life upon leaving school. Hence , today the pressure on students and the parents for excellence in performance is gigantic. Today’s child has little or no time for playing cricket in the quadrangle, to play tap rugger in the class room or plan to raid the school tuck shop at night, but spend most time in the classes. Sports have become so competitive that individualism has taken over team spirit, parents running behind coaches and teachers for favours. us, my message to both parents and students is that we must allow an element of freedom for the student to decide his life whether it is in selecting a career or some other sort. During our 13

school we had little guidance on our careers and what we wanted to be in life. My father or mother never asked me to be a chartered accountant.Similarly I doubt whether any of my school mates were told by their parents what professions they were to select whilst they were yet students. As Steve Jobbs the founder of apple said, you must allow the student to be hungry and foolish. en he will use his creativity ,think freely for himself and select the path that will use his talents and skills best and endeavor in that field. In my view brilliance comes from being open and allowing intuition, human nature and common sense to take place. You do not achieve that by putting handcu s on your brilliance. President Maithreepala Sirisena become the Presidents of Sri Lanka from starting life as a Gramaseveka as much as Steve Jobs found Apple a er being a school dropout at the age of 17. In my view all kids have talent and we must not squander them. In my view you must knock on doors until your knuckles bleed. Doors will slam in your face. You must pick yourself up, dust yourself o , and knock again. It is the only way to achieve your goals in life. When I explained school life during my time, one might think I paid no regard for studies or paid less emphasis on studies. I did not mean any of that. My message to both the students and the parents was that the students must not be pushed or forced to follow a career for the sake of following a career or to satisfy needs and egos of others. e student must do and be encouraged to pursue what he is good at to bring the best out of him. e times we were at Trinity life was more tougher and di cult than it is today and worse in the hostel. We would see our parents only once in three months, had to eat the boarding food cooked by cooks who chewed beetle so they could never taste salt, used common bathrooms that did not have doors and slept on mattresses on which probably my father also slept when he was in the same hostel. Worse o we were as we got caught to the period of rationing food and clothes in the mid 7o’s. We had tea with what we thought was juggery ,bread with pumpkin gravy and wore blue shorts that become purple with one wash. I hear today the boarding houses have televisions, mobile phones and food catered by a star class hotel. In hindsight I have no regrets but only glad that our lives were so di cult that we were determined to do better. We were pushed to the wall so that we came out stronger so that we were prepared and battle hardened to face any situation in life. at was the best part of my learning from this great and the best school of all. Dear students you are indeed privileged to be a part of such a great institution. Not many schools can boast of a landscaped compound of 26 acres amidst some of the most beautiful and historical buildings ,two separate international standard stadiums for both cricket and rugby, a swimming pool, well equipped science laboratories , four modern transport buses, and more than all an institution so rich in tradition, culture, values and providing some of the best infrastructure for both studies and sports in this country today. Take all that this school has to o er you and venture out in to the world with your heads held up high, proud in the knowledge and assurance that you have the best of foundations in life. You can achieve all and everything in life. So once again I want to thank the Principal and the Board of Governors for inviting me and my wife to be the chief guests at your prize giving. It was indeed a privilege to have spoken to you. ankY0u. 14
