they did exceptionally well. Following Provincial wins, both the Western Music Senior and Junior Choirs were crowned All Island Champions in 2015; the rst time that this has happened for many years. In the instrumental eld, AAT Surendrakumar became the Piano Solo All Island winner and his was judged to be the most outstanding peformance at the Sri Lanka Festival of Music, dance and Speech. Along with M Seneviratne, he also won the Piano Duet category. Our younger pianists, H Karunarathne and S Wijethunga also emerged victorious in the Piano Duet 12 Years category. Finally, as far as the Arts are concerned, the celebrated National Drum and Dance Troupe of Trinity College continue to go from strength to strength, and were the winners of the 2015 All Island Drum and Dance Competition. They also represented Sri Lanka in the Koronadal International dance Festival in the Philippines. The 17th Kandy Trinity College Senior Scout Troop is one of the oldest Scout troops in the world; founded in 1914, just six years after Baden Powell published “Scouting for Boys”, which led directly to the setting up of the Scout Movement. In addition to all their usual activities, highlights of last year included the now Annual First Aid Course, organised with the guidance of the St John's Brigade; “Vanskap '15”, a friendship day organised by Trinity Scouts designed to develop the brotherhood of Scouts and Guides in Kandy schools; the annual Senior Scout Troop Camp, which took place in Avissawela during August; just before which time C Ekanayake, M Jayasinghe and S Dissanayake represented Trinity at the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan. There were also triumphs for the Troop, including victories in the JH De Saram Memorial Challenge Hike; and most notably, the Sampath Ranawaka Memorial Challenge Trophy, an All Island event which our boys won for the rst time ever. Finally, four boys won the prestigious President Scout Award in 2015 - MMD Samaranayake, RDB Wettewa, RAKE Gunatunge and R Nidarshan. The Interact Club has been very successful in its ventures during 2015. The Club carried out various Community Service and Fundraising projects, including the Royal-Trinity Tap Rugby 7s tournament, and an event to raise funds for the prevention of Tuberculosis. In a similar vein, the Trinity College chapter of Sri Lanka Unites has been very active this past year in a number of projects designed to support the process of reconciliation which is being carried out in the country; and to mould a new breed of leader to drive the nation forward. The Young Farmers' Club already plays an important role in College life; and I hope that this will increase further as I am keen to encourage much more proactive involvement by the boys themselves in the Trinity College Farm. The Club stimulates interest in Agriculture and Livestock work and fosters a spirit of cooperation and mutual support amongst Agriculture Students and Farmers. It also fosters an interest in areas such as the Environment, Wildlife Management and Horticulture. At Trinity, 93
I am anxious to ensure that our boys are given every encouragement to develop an interest in Farming, which has always played such an important part in the culture and economy of Sri Lanka. The Radio Club is one of the most active Clubs at Trinity. Since 2002, it has been providing sound and multimedia facilities around the College. And they really are everywhere, I can tell you. Every event I attend (and probably more besides) seems to be supported in some way by the Radio Club. They do a fantastic job. 2015 saw an increase in announcing, photography and videography work. This even included a video documentary about the 2015 Bradby Shield... though I am not sure how many Trinitians will want to watch that particular lm! Seriously, though, what will have been greatly appreciated, is the Live Update Service provided for every Rugby Match by the Radio Club (or the Media Unit, as they re now more accurately described). There are so many more Societies in operation at Trinity, covering interests as diverse and valuable as Astronomy, Science, Global Linking, Recitation, ICT, and the Model United Nations, an increasingly popular and respected organisation in schools and colleges around the world. Boys are regularly achieving outstanding results in all these areas, including at a National and International level. For example, WLR Kularatne, IC Manawaduge and LN Dissanayake won bronze medals at the Sri Lankan Physics Olympiad. Master Kularatne was also selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Asian Physics Olympiad in Hong Kong. Finally in this section, special mention should be made of the Cadets. They celebrated their 125th Anniversary at Trinity in grand style, with a walk to commemorate their services to the school and country. Sport It will come as no surprise that Sport remains one of the very highest priorities at Trinity College. I have been so impressed, since my arrival, by the sheer quantity and variety of sporting opportunities available for boys of all ages. As with Clubs and Societies, I will include as much as I can, but fear that I am bound to miss out something, such is the range and extent of sporting achievement at Trinity, both by teams and individuals. I will start with Rugby, as that is probably the sport which enjoys most prominence at Trinity. It certainly creates the most passion, pressure, excitement... and social media comment, not all of it fair or objective! Whilst it would be fair to say that 2015 will not go down in history as one of Trinity's vintage seasons, it was by no means disastrous. The 1st XV won the majority of their matches, nished 3rd in the League and reached the semi-nals of the Milo President's Trophy. Two players, Isuru Rangala and Rahul Karunathilake, represented the Under 20 Sri Lankan team at the Asian Tournament held in Singapore. The Under 16 team, in contrast, had a very good season indeed, winning their version of the Bradby and only losing to a very strong St Anthony's XV on several very close, low- 94
scoring encounters.Amongst our younger players, three (AR Kulathunge, Jayavi Peramunage and Kovida Wickremasinghe) were awarded Certicates for being selected for the nal round of Under 14 players from around the country. And Harsha Samarasinghe was chosen as the ultimate winner of this competition. His prize was to deliver the match ball at the Canada vs Romania 2015 World Cup Match in the UK. Athletics is the oldest sport at Trinity, and as such occupies a special place in College Sport. It is also a sport which enjoys much success at the moment. We won the Zonal Meet for the 21st consecutive year. Both our Under 17s and Under 19s were age group champions, and RN Kumarage was the Under 17 Champion athlete. At the Provincial Meet, the U19s were Champions and the U17s were Runners-up. We were the relay champions and 23 Trinitians were selected to participate in the All Island School games. In the Junior National Championships, P Harriprasanna won the 800 Metres, SD Ratwatte came 2nd in the 100 Metres and 3rd in the 200 Metres, but won the 100 metres at the prestigious Sir John Tarbet Senior Championship. At the Central Province Meet, S Sirisoma won the U15 High Jump, R Kumarage won the U17 100m and 110m Hurdles, SD Ratwatte won both 100m and 200m and H Mahindarathne won the Shot Putt; all four relay teams won at both U17 and U19 level, with the U17 4x400m and U19 4x100m squads both setting a new Meet Record; and there were excellent performances from many other athletes, including SKD Dharmasiri, A Rathnayake, R Madena, P Harriprasanna, SN Hettiarachchi, MJ Dissanayake and R Bandara. At the National School Games, our U19s became 2nd Runner-up (for the rst time in 20 years). 19 athletes were awarded their National School Colours. There were too many outstanding individual performances to mention them all here, but SD Ratwatte won the U19 100 metres and was selected for the National Pool. He also won the 4x100m relay with YTBT Pitawala, D Premaratne and D Dodanwala. The four boys now also hold a new School Record. In the U20s, RMGKD Ratnayake won the 400m and H Wijegunawardane came 4th in the Shot Putt. In addition, 10 of our younger athletes were selected to take part in a Meet in Malaysia. Finally, on Athletics, I would like to acknowledge the generosity of a number of Old Boys who have between them set up the Trinity College Athletics Foundation and sponsored Sports equipment and athletics kits for the boys. It is much appreciated. Hockey has also been an important sport at Trinity for many years, and it continues to be played enthusiastically and competitively. 2015 saw some excellent results for the team and good individual performances too, with three players RGTA Rathnayake, DBGKE Jayasinghe and JADKI Jayasinghe all chosen to represent Sri Lanka in Malaysia. We reached the quarter nals of the U19 All Island Schools Hockey Tournament in Matale. 2015 was a decent year for Trinity swimming, though things seem to have slipped a little in this sport for some reason over the past few years. I may be mistaken, but I seem to remember that when I was working in Sri Lanka previously, Trinity was regarded as 95
the leading local school for swimming. I would like that to be the case again if possible. Swimming is such a good sport, encouraging high levels of tness, technique and self- discipline. And it also often appeals to boys who might not be natural ball-game players. So I shall be looking at what we might do to raise the standards of swimming again. Having said this, there are some very good individual swimmers at Trinity. Boys like D Dharmapriya and SB Senanayake have achieved excellent results this past year, supported by the likes of R Harjagan, Y Dayaratne, J Abeyrathne, M Jayasinghe, S Sirimanne and V Rajapakshe. And Trinity was Novice Boys Champions at the Central Province Swimming Championships. So there is denitely hope for the future. Soccer is a popular sport in Sri Lanka and at Trinity, even though it will never challenge Rugby here, I suspect. 2015 was a successful season for the U19 and U17 teams, both of whom qualied for the All Island Tournament having nished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Provincial Meet. Weight-Lifting had a very successful year in 2015, exemplied by the outstanding achievements of two boys in particular. S.N Abeywarna, following back-to-back wins in the All Island School Games and multiple Junior National records, went on to win a silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune. B.J Wijewickrama, who is a year younger, is a Sri Lankan record holder and consistent winner at National Level. He too took part in Youth Commonwealth Games competitions this year, winning both a Silver and a Bronze medal. Both these boys have great futures ahead of them in this sport. After some ups and downs in its 102 year history at Trinity, Boxing is enjoying a resurgence at the moment, and there are realistic ambitions for the school to regain its position as one of the top boxing schools in Sri Lanka. Indeed, in 2015, we were runners- up in the Junior National Boxing Meet, following some outstanding individual performances. Saranga Goonathilake and Shums Ziard won silver medals, whilst Virajitha Mahadiulwewa won a bronze. All three were awarded their National School Colours. As was Chamodh Dissanayake, Gold Medallist in the Super Heavyweight category. The undoubted star of Trinity boxing, though, is Senior Prefect Ryan Weerakoon. A heavyweight, Ryan has gone into the National (and Trinity) Record Books as the rst novice boxer to win a Gold Medal; the rst to win two consecutive Golds; and he has the highest bout to knockouts ratio (12 bouts/ 11KOs). Twice winner of National School Colours, Ryan has also been awarded a Boxing Lion. Badminton is thriving at Trinity, even though we do not have our own Courts at the moment. I hope this situation will be rectied soon, as it would certainly help our players signicantly if they could train and play at Asgirya. We clearly have some very talented individual players, with the following boys selected to represent Kandy in the Junior Nationals as a result of their performances in Zonal matches: B.Ranasinghe, B Niyangoda and Y.S Rodrigo (U17); K Kumarendran and R Rajendrakumar (U15); 96
M.Wijesundera, Horadagoda, B Basnayake, S De Arthur, R Balasuriya, A Edirisinghe, T Dinesh and Y Ravindraraja (U13); and K Balasuriya (U11). The tennis players enjoyed a successful season, with the U19s emerging as Champions of the B Division Tournament, whilst the U17s were Runners-up. They also won the Norman S Walter Memorial Shield in their encounter with the OBA. Table Tennis, too, had a successful year, with Anan Manzil and Abdullah Manzil winning the U18 D Division at the Inter School Championships; and M Gunathilake, C Bandara and A Manzil becoming U21 Champions at the Tibhar All Island Novice Championship. Basketball is another popular sport at Trinity, and I enjoy seeing lots of boys playing for fun during their free time. Sadly, though, the results in 2015 were not as good as in some previous years. Perhaps the most success in 2015 came in the U17 Zonal Tournament, when the boys had wins over Wesswood College and St Anthony's. 2015 was a very good year for Trinity Karate. The stars of the team are Nadeesh Ilukkumbura and M.R Ishkullah who represented Sri Lanka at the 2015 World karate Championships in Iran, winning bronze medals. Master Ishkullah achieved the same result in Malaysia. Both boys were selected to the Sri Lankan Schools' Karate Pool and have won multiple medals nationally over the past year. I am also told that Gymnastics is making good progress at Trinity, and many gold medals have been won at All Island Tournaments, largely due to the outstanding coaching of Mr Lakwin Ranasinghe. Last, but very denitely not least, we turn to Cricket, where Trinity enjoyed an extremely good season at both U17 and U19 levels. The U17 Division 1 team consistently won matches throughout the season, qualifying for the quarter nals by coming rst in both Rounds. They reached the semi nals when they lost to Ananda College. Outstanding performances came from T Dilshan and S.R Waidyathilaka (5 wicket hauls) and from S Shanogeeth, who scored a remarkable 270 not out against Rahula College. The U19 team were the undoubted team of the season at Trinity. They were crowned Champions of the Singer All Island Schools League, winning 10 of their 17 League Matches outright (and three 1st Innings wins), losing outright only once in the whole season. They were also Semi-Finalists in the Limited Overs Tournament and Quarter Finalists in the T20 Tournament. In addition, they won the Best Team Award at the Singer Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Awards and the Sunday Observer Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer Award ceremonies. Raveen Sayer will be awarded Best Captain, Best Bowler and Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer (2nd runner-up) awards at the Sunday Observer Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer Award ceremony, whilst Naveen Ekanayake will be awarded Best Fielder (runner-up). In addition, Raveen Sayer, Lahiru Kumara and S Shanogeeth represented Sri Lanka U19 against Pakistan. 97
Finally in this Sports section, any boy who represents the College dreams of Colours and nally the prestigious Lion. Colours for 2015 were won by P G D W Premaratne, P Harriprasanna, J T Dodanwela, L M D Y T B T Pitawela and W S A W M R S D S. Ratwatte for Athletics; L Heenagama for Basketball; K R Palayangoda, S Goonetilleke, D K M I Dissanayake, S Gunathilake, D L V Ranasinghe and V B Mahadivulwewa for Boxing; D Jayalath, S Shanogeeth, H Boyagoda, L Kumara, D Thilakaratne, N Weerasinghe and K. Hiniduma for Cricket; R. G T A Rathnayake, D. B. G K E Jayasinghe and J A D K I Jayasinghe for Hockey; A Boyagoda, A Bandara, D Ratwatte, G Pethiyagoda, T Perera, M G Ismail, R Samarasekara, A Priyankara, I Rangala, R Karunathilake, , S Gunathilake, R Weerakoon, S Dissanayake and N Sakalasooriya for Rugby; S M B Senanayake for Swimming; W M S K Wijesudara for Table Tennis; Naveed Mohommed for Tennis; K M W D B Abeyratne, R N P Perera, G G K M Gamage, P D D I Fernando, P Agilesh and J M P S T B Jayasundara for Weight Lifting. The very prestigious Lion was awarded to C. Dissanayake for Boxing, A B Jayasinghe for Cricket and S N Abeywarna for Weight Lifting. Their achievements in the sports eld have been exemplary; and they are outstanding Trinitians who will, I know, always be ambassadors for Trinity College. My grateful thanks to the Teachers in Charge, Coaches, Parents and all those who supported sport in numerous ways. Without their enthusiasm and support, all these outstanding results would not have been achieved. Staff Any school in the world is only as good as its staff. That is just as true at Trinity as it is at my old school, Eton College. Hundreds of years of tradition and history count for nothing if the quality of teaching is not good enough. I am therefore very grateful to all those teachers who understand what an honour, privilege and responsibility it is to work here at Trinity College. Working here should not be seen as just another job. At some schools, all teachers are expected to do is deliver the curriculum within their classroom. Not so here at Trinity. Teachers here need to relish the fact that they will be involved in many different areas of school life. And that only by knowing their students in an all-round, holistic way can they hope to inspire them. Many of the nest teachers here have been at the school for a very long time; yet they remain, because they appreciate how special it is to be part of the Trinity College community. I urge them to guide and mentor all the younger, newer teachers; so that they, too, will understand the responsibility that they have accepted by coming to the school. As the new Principal, I am extremely conscious of that responsibility myself, and am learning more and more each day. My mentors are people who are steeped in the history of Trinity College, whether as Old Boys, long-standing Teachers or Former Principals. I am especially grateful to men like Mr Leonard De Alwis, who has been generous with his time and advice, but who has never tried to tell me what to do. 98
And at a time when so many of us are new, including the Vice Principal, Head of Administration and my Secretary, I would like to pay tribute here to the Co Vice Principal, Mr Ananda Marasinghe. He has been a tower of strength to me personally since my arrival at Trinity, and has been my “go to” man whenever I need to nd out anything at all. Not only is he passionate about Trinity, but he seems to know everything and everyone. His knowledge of Trinity and Trinitians is encyclopaedic; indeed, he seems to have had about 1000 boys in his batch, as so many people know him! And I am yet to nd anyone who has a bad word to say about Ananda; the new Vice Principal, Thomas Jeganathan, and I are indeed fortunate to have Ananda Marasinghe as part of our triumvirate. Each year, it is customary that we bid farewell to the staff who have moved on from the school, whilst warmly welcoming those who have joined the Trinity family over the past year. Old Boys I have a very good friend, now living in Australia, who is a proud Old Trinitian. So I knew way before I was appointed Principal just how passionately the Old Boys feel about the College. I see this as a real strength and hope very much that it continues. I also personally value the support and advice of individual Old Boys and the various OBA organisations; and urge them to continue to help Trinity in any way that they can. Several batches are already involved in projects at the school, which will signicantly improve the lives and opportunities of current Trinitians. The Batches of '96 and '97, for instance, are working with the College on projects to digitalize the school archives and to develop and modernise the Library so that it becomes a Creative, Critical Learning Environment, t for the 21st Century. I am especially grateful to them for their support, both nancially and in terms of technical expertise. There are so many leaders in every eld of life who were at Trinity. We would be foolish not to tap into that huge reservoir of knowledge and skill. Parents Much the same goes for the Parents, who are a huge support and source of strength to Trinity. Not only do they play a valuable role through organisations like the PTA, but they should also know that I am always happy to see them to discuss any issue. Whereas the PTA exists primarily as a forum to discuss wider issues about the school community, my door (or email box!) is always open to parents who wish to discuss issues pertaining to their own children. I will always listen to what they wish to say; and will take appropriate action if needed, in a fair and objective way. All I would ask is that parents trust the school always to act in the best interests of the boys. And I give them my word that their children will never be penalised because they have come to see me. 99
Buildings and Infastructure There is much that needs to be done to restore the buildings of Trinity College to the state in which they should be. Many of the school buildings, ranging from Classrooms to Boarding facilities need urgent renovation to make them t for purpose. I fear that this will be a long and expensive task; but one which needs to be done as a matter of urgency. As the current Principal or Trinity, I believe that one of my responsibilities is to act as responsible custodian of the school; and to put in place an extensive rolling programme of decoration, maintenance, restoration, and new building and infrastructure projects which will ensure that the school remains a leading institution long after we have all departed. At the moment, there is no such plan, though I know that the Board of Governors are well aware of the need to have one. Indeed, I am delighted that they have set up Committees to oversee School Development in a number of areas. I have already mentioned the generous projects being undertaken by the batches of '96 and '97. I hope very much that they will act as pioneers for a major initiative whereby all batches undertake to support Trinity with specic projects which appeal to them and for which they can take joint responsibility with the College. My aim is that these will all come to fruition by 2022, when Trinity will celebrate its 150th Birthday. I shall be presenting a paper to the Board about this in the next few months, so would welcome any thoughts and advice about how best to instigate a programme like this. Let me end my rst Principal's Report by saying what a privilege and an honour it is to have been appointed to lead the exceptional Institution that is Trinity College Kandy. I am extremely grateful to the Bishop of Colombo, Chairman of the Board and all Board Members both for their faith in me and also for the huge amount of work that they do for Trinity College on an entirely voluntary basis. We are indeed fortunate to have the support and guidance of such an eminent, loyal and professionally impressive Board of Governors. And I would also like to thank all those stakeholders of Trinity who have made me feel so welcome since my arrival - Old Boys, Parents, Teachers, Administrative Staff... and especially the Boys themselves. They are the most important people at Trinity, and everything that we do here should be for their benet. Thank-you. Respice Finem 100

JUNIOR SCHOOL PRIZE GIVING 2016 Headmaster’s Report Rt. Rev. Diloraj Canagasabey, the Lord Bishop of the Colombo Diocese, the Chaplain, our Chief Guest Mr. Ranjith Fonseka and Madam Fonseka, members of the Board of Governors, the Vice Principal Mr.Thomas Jeganathan, The Co-Vice Principal Mr.Ananda Marasinghe, the Headmaster of the Middle School Mr.Palitha Senaratne, distinguished invitees, staff, parents, pupils, ladies and gentlemen. Today as we review this year's activities and recognize the high achievers, it is an encouragement to have you all with us this evening. First and foremost I am humbled and deeply honoured to stand amidst this intellectual gathering to present my report for 2016 at the Annual Prize Giving. Sir we thank you for accepting our invitation graciously in the midst of many calls on your valuable time. This evening it is my bounden duty to introduce our distinguished Chief Guest Mr. Ranjith Fonseka former Headmaster of the Junior School, one of the nest teachers we had at the best school of all. Joining Trinity in 1970 from Maris Stella College, Negombo and the school of agriculture he had the greatest opportunity of associating himself with the stalwarts of the day, Hillary Abeyratne and Bill Sinnathamby. Realizing that his life's calling was to serve Trinity, a decision he has not regretted to this day. As a house master of Napier House and the Junior School he instilled a good sense of discipline and an orderly conduct of matters. It is his experience as House Master of the Junior School that kindled his interest in child education, in which he has been very resourceful. He was the Master in Charge of the Young Farmers Club from 1971 to 1996 and the Master in Charge of the National Drum and Dance Troupe from 1991 to 2000. His appointment as the Headmaster of the Junior School broke fresh grounds in being the rst Roman Catholic to take up this position. Having served as the head of the Science and the Agriculture faculties in the Upper School and as the Headmaster of the Junior School he made his mark. Realizing the importance of preparing the platform for the budding leaders of tomorrow to display their talents and interests, Mr. Fonseka initiated several activities, clubs and societies in this part of the school. the Art Circle and Nature Club are a few societies organized for the benet of the Student Mr. Ranjith Fonseka left us in 2007. 125
Mrs. Lilian Fonseka too served Trinity as a member of the tutorial staff for 32 long years. Joining TCK in 1970 and serving in the Science Section of the Upper School as the Zoology and Science Teacher Mrs. Fonseka too served as the Sectional Head of the Advanced level Science Section prior to her retirement. Today they are spend their retirement in Minuwangoda surrounded by their two daughters, their spouses, the grand children and all the loved ones. TUTORIAL STAFF The devoted, dedicated staff continues to run that extra mile making an immense contribution to the life of school and I am indeed fortunate to claim of such a staff behind me. Performing their duties tirelessly and displaying deep commitment and professionalism is the secret of all our achievements in curricular and co-curricular activities during the year. It is indeed a reection of their contribution and I am grateful to my staff. Mrs. S. Xavier will be leaving us at the end of the year. We wish to record her dedicated services rendered towards Indian dancing and wish her every success in all her future endeavors. Mrs.G.A.S Randima also will be leaving us at the end of the year and we wish her all the best. PRE SCHOOL Pre-school continues to be in demand as a well recognized institution as they cater to psycho social and pre operational skills of the early learners. A very special thank you to all of you who have donated prizes which were awarded at the Prize Giving today. CONCLUSION If you are to teach the children of today, the way we taught yesterday, then we are robbing them of tomorrow. [Plato] My dear parents and teachers. We live with the children of the formative years who show a different approach and enthusiasm to learn, and not the way we learnt a couple of decades ago. The children and the whiz kids of the 21st century are exposed to “Technology Advancement” in the different form of Face Book, Wikipedia, e-learning, Instagram, blog, cloud and email etc. as the social media towards Networking. In the present context information is shared and is not a “closed system” Kids are smarter than the teachers in this digital learning era, hence the role of a teacher has become so complex and the preparation and readiness to teaching is very much challenging but let us understand that we are living in the“Age of information Explosion” The children could be mislead accessing web sites which are not conducive to growth of a child. The parents and the teachers have to be vigilant to guide the child towards the “learning objectives” of Advance Technology. Mind mapping of teachers will help the aspect of learning to learn in the 21st century. I urge the parents and loved ones not to force or over do the learning aspect of children and kill their creativity [Blooms Taxonomy] as there are ample opportunities for the innocent child to aspire in their chosen careers of Medicine, Engineering, Law, Management, ICT, Architecture, Interior Decorations, Hospitality Industry, Fitness and many more emerging elds where there are world of opportunities in Vocational Training. I fervently wish that the award winners today will prosper into great citizens with careful upbringing and nurturing by parents and teachers around them. “Respice Finem” Thank you. P. H. Navaratne Headmaster Junior School. 132
