JASON SH E LTO N NER APPLICATIONGRADUATE GRAPHIC DESIG
In my pursuit of looking for new creative explorations, I saw your job opening on your twitter page... and I thought I had to apply!
I'm not just a graduate.... Dear Sir / Madam, I’m writing this letter to express my interest in the Junior Graphic Designer role, at the National Space Centre. I can bring valuable contributions to the creative team. As a perfectionist, no detail would go unnoticed, particularly in tailoring it to the needs of the target audience. This is essential in design when aiming at a broad cross-section, including children, teachers, families and enthusiasts. My time at university gave me the platform to become a better designer, learning new skills in a collaborative environment, whilst responding to constructive criticism from both tutors and peers. I have 8 years of technical experience working with Photoshop to manipulate and re-touch artwork, photography and bespoke designs; from my A-levels into the present day. Working with the small independent company Luisa’s Vegan Chocolates, I reported directly to the company owner as part of an internship. I completed the branding, packaging, 2-D material (leaflets, business cards and menus), GIFs and photography for the website, within a six weeks period. I successfully delivered the project brief within the time frame as a result of my organisational skills.
The project was both collaborative and an independent effort. As the owner is passionate about the business, she wanted to be involved within the design process. This collaboration allowed a variety of perspectives to be heard, thus feeling more personal to the client. However, there were parts of this project where I worked independently and I was able to plan and prioritise competing objectives and incorporate any design adjustments to meet tight deadlines. This internship enhanced my confidence to be creative within the confines of a design brief. I was responsible for contracting printing suppliers to receive high-quality prints, ensuring I saw the project through to completion. Working to a restricted budget also required me to make the packaging both cost-effective and eco-friendly, tying into the business ethos. Recently, Curakit reached out to create a booklet for sample boxes for their wellness brand. Their brief to me was to enhance the packaging to show customers more detail in the content of their boxes. Collaboration with the project leads throughout was essential to achieve the desired objectives. Alongside my freelancing work, I also work part-time at Tesco. This gives me a great insight into current brand-awareness and consumer behaviours and traits. Having this up-to-date knowledge helps when being given design briefs as I am aware of what works well when being put in front of customers. This current role has also contributed to my excellent communication skills, something which I believe will help me in the Junior Graphic Designer role. I look forward to expanding upon this at the interview...
