See the Secretary’s report below for asummary of the changes that were made.Jim ShermanPresident
From the SecretaryThe Board of Governors recently conducted a thorough review of the Club’s existing Rules which pertainto our guests. It is clear to us that our members should be free to bring their friends and family to visit Germantownand enjoy our facilities with them. It is also clear that many of our members’ first exposure to the Cluband its fine facilities was as a guest of our members and that this is an excellent way to encourage newmembers to join.On the other hand, we felt that some provisions of the existing rules should be changed to ensure thatthe full range of benefits of GCC membership are reserved for our members who share in the financialcommitments that keep Germantown viable financially. As a result, the Club’s Rules have been amended to tighten up some of these provisions. These changeswill be included in the updated version of the Rules and posted on the website for reference. Here is a summary of the changes. • The maximum number of days that a guest may visit the Club and use the facilities during a Membership Year has been increased from six days to ten days. Ten is the maximum no matter which member signs in a guest on any particular day. • The maximum number of clinics or lessons in tennis or squash that an adult or a child guest may take in a lifetime has been changed from six to ten. • Starting with the 2018 Membership Year, guests may not play or be a member of the roster of any of the Club’s league or interclub tennis or squash teams. • Indoor Contracts - Each contract must include either a minimum of two GCC members in good standing or 50% of the players on the contract must be GCC members in good standing, whichever is greater. • The fine imposed on members for a violation of the guest provisions was increased from $100 to $200 per violation. • The status of members’ child care employees while on Club premises was clarified. • Guests are now permitted to use the Club’s locker room facilities while on the premises.
Admissions CommitteeThanks to all for your efforts in bringing in new members, keep them coming! Our vigorousmembership campaign is continuing. Through your efforts and support we have beenaveraging 2 site visits per week in June for potential members who are interested inmembership. Please look out for new faces and give them a good GCC welcome. There aremany players among this group so be sure to invite them on the courts and into games. Welcome to our new Members! BUILDING ON RICHTRADITIONSIn the mid 19th century, a group of schoolboys inflannel shirts began to play cricket in aGermantown pasture. Because of the alcohol andgambling that it attracted, locals shied away fromthe sport, and they knew very little about thegame. Still, the boys’ matches seemed innocentenough and passersby occasionally stopped towatch. As the few spectators became crowds, thegames’ fans outgrew the seating: As the few initialspectators became crowds, the game's fansoutgrew the sparse seating, which consisted of awhite fence along the pasture's edge and sixfolding chairs for the women who attended thematches. An American cricket legacy grew fromthese humble beginnings. For years, The Germantown Cricket Club has beena staple of Germantown culture. Originallyfounded in 1854 and incorporated in 1880, theclub has served as a recreation center andcommunity meeting place. Described as an“international ambassador,” its reach hasextended well beyond Germantown. The club’sparticipation in national and internationalsporting events established its reputation acrossthe globe and it continues to attract and impressvisitors from New York to Pakistan.

Gin TastingFriday, August 12th, 2016 The first confirmed date for the production of gin is the early 17th century in Holland, although claims have been made that it was produced prior to this in Italy. In Holland it was produced as a medicine and sold in chemist shops to treat stomach complaints, gout and gallstones. To make it more palatable, the Dutch started to flavour it with juniper, which had medicinal properties of its own. Join us and sample some Dutch Courage!Reservations are required for this event.
