ILQ | Teachers’ Book Al- Nasr SURAH 110: AL-NASR ‫سورة النصر‬ The Help Learning Outcomes: At the end of this Surah, the students will learn: 1. The event of “The Opening of Mecca” (Fath al-Makkah). 2. The character of The Most-Knowledgeable of Allah SWT. 3. To rely to the help of Allah in our life. SURAH OVERVIEW Surah al-Nasr is a Medinan surah. “Nasr” means help. It is a surah which was revealed as a signal and an announcement of the arrival of God’s help for the Muslims. The help is in the form of the Muslims’ return to Mecca. Interestingly, this surah was revealed even before the event of “The Opening of Mecca” (Fath al-Makkah). This surah is one of the proofs that the Quran is really revealed by Allah because it can describe things that will happen in the future. TAFSIR CORNER 1. The announcement of God’s future aid: \"When comes the Help of Allah, and Victory.\" This surah starts with an announcement which declares the coming of an inevitable event. With Allah's help, Muslims will be victorious and Mecca will belong to them. There was a widespread rumour that if Prophet Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬manages to reconquer Mecca, he is truly a prophet. This surah and its consequent event then, proved the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬. 2. The prophecy that Islam will be embraced in large numbers: “And you see people embracing God’s religion in large numbers” With the opening of Mecca, the victory of Islam, and the proven legitimacy of Prophet Muhammad’s ‫ ﷺ‬prophethood, people from all over Arabian Peninsula began to convert to Islam in large groups. 3. A reminder that whatever blessings the Muslim enjoy, all of it come from Allah: “Then praise and glorify your Lord, and seek His forgiveness. He is the One who accepts repentance.” Muslims should return to Allah and worship Him, glorify Him, praise Him, and ask Him for forgiveness. When we put Allah before everything else, surely He will help us in all our affairs. HADITH CORNER Ibn Abbas r.a, when was asked by Umar r.a on what this surah means, he answered that the surah signalled the coming of the Prophet’s death. The Prophet’s sole task was to be God’s messenger and to deliver God’s commands in establishing Islam. With the completion of that task, it is only plausible that the Prophet, then, must return to his Creator.

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Al- Nasr LESSON 1: WIN THE CHARADE Introduction: This activity explores the key terms that are important to be understood in verse 1, which are “naṣr” and “fatḥ”. Set Induction: In the first verse, Allah declares that help and victory from Allah will surely come to the Prophet and the Muslims. What are the words in surah that carry the meanings “help” and “victory”? Let us find out. Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the meanings of “naṣr” and “fatḥ”. Materials: 1. Scoreboard (write down their score in a creative way) either draw stars on the whiteboard or give them a gift for each correct answer. Procedure: 1. Divide the children into two teams before playing. 2. The teacher will choose a verse from the surah randomly and \"act out\" the verse without speaking, while the students of both teams try to guess what the verse is. 3. The first team to guess the word or phrase gets a point. Lessons: 1. This activity is related to the terms “naṣr” and “fatḥ” in the first verse of surah al-Naṣr which means help and victory. 2. Let the students compete to get the victory of the day. Lesson Assessment: 1. Ask the students about the meanings of the words.

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Al- Nasr LESSON 2: THE MAGNET OF TRUTH Introduction: The activity here is about how victory is acquired. Set Induction: In verse 2, Allah says that when the help and victory come, we will see mankind embracing Islam in crowds. What would the situation look like? Let us conduct an experiment to find out. Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to relate the help and victory from Allah with how this help and victory take form. Materials: 1. Paper clips 2. Strong magnets Procedure: 1. Prepare the materials. 2. Put the paper clips on a table. 3. Put the strong magnet on the back of your palm. 4. Hover your “magnetized” hand above the paper clips. 5. Observe what happens. Lessons: 1. The magnet represents truth, namely Islam. 2. The paper clips represent mankind. 3. With Islam, there will be help from Allah. 4. And when there is help, there is nothing that could stop Islam and Muslims from acquiring victory. 5. In what manner will the victory show itself? When humans embrace Islam in crowds. Lesson Assessment: Formative: 1. How does a magnet work? 2. What are the objects that can be influenced by magnets? Summative: 1. Who does Allah bestow His help too? 2. What is the sign of an Islamic victory?

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Al- Nasr LESSON 3: THE CROWDS OF MUSLIMS IN ISLAMIC HISTORY Introduction: Here it extends lesson 2 by giving historical examples of the said victory through storytelling. Set Induction: The surah describes the victory that Allah promised and fulfilled for the Muslims in the time of the Prophet. But do you know that Allah’s help and Islam’s victory are not unique only to the time of the Prophet? This occasion has been repeated again and again in many other eras after the time of the Prophet. Let us find out about the stories that are like the victory of the Prophet. Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to give examples of the victory of Islam. Materials: Stories of: 1. The Opening of Makkah, by the Prophet. 2. The Opening of Constantinople, by Sultan Muhammad al-Fatih. 3. The Conquests of Syria, by Saladin al-Ayyubi. Procedure: 1. Have a storytelling session with the students. 2. Along with the storytelling session, emphasize these aspects: a) The urgency of the mission. b) The religious personality of the leaders. c) The religious commitment of the followers. d) How Allah gives them the victory. Lessons: 1. Some criteria determine whether God’s help will be given to Muslims or not. 2. Firstly, help comes in the direst of situations. 3. Secondly, it comes with the integrity of the leaders. If the leaders are individuals who hold on to Islam strongly, then only the help of Allah will come. 4. Thirdly, the leaders must be followed by equally great followers. If there are no great followers, then there will be no help. 5. Then only Allah will send down His help to his worthy servants. Lesson Assessment: Formative: 1. Ask them about the details of the stories told. Summative: 2. What are the criteria required for the help of God to arrive?

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Al- Nasr LESSON 4: ALLAH THE MOST FORGIVING Introduction: The focus of the activities after this will be on verse 3. Here, the activity explores one of the beautiful names of Allah, al-Tawwāb. Set Induction: In the previous activity, we have learned about the concept of istighfār, because Allah wants to always be aware of the source of success that we enjoy. And Allah is the Most Forgiving whenever His servants ask for forgiveness. But how forgiving is Allah? Let us find out. Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Identify the meaning of al-Tawwāb. 2. Relates the Name of al-Tawwāb with the relevance of their daily life. Materials: 1. Styrofoam objects (cups, plates, etc.) 2. Acetone. 3. Glass/metal bowl. Note: adult supervision is required. Procedure: 1. Prepare the materials. 2. Pour some acetone into a metal or glass bowl. 3. Then, put the Styrofoam objects in the acetone solution. 4. Press the objects a little bit so that the reaction can take place at a faster rate. Lessons: 1. The acetone solution represents God’s forgiveness. 2. The Styrofoam objects represent our sins. The bigger the objects, the bigger is our sins. 3. When the Styrofoam objects are put into acetone, they will always melt no matter how much, just like Allah’s al-Tawwāb. 4. The name al-Tawwāb represents God as the Most Forgiving. 5. However, God is forgiving in many senses. 6. In this name, it represents His relentless forgiveness. 7. No matter how many times His servants have done wrong, as long as they ask for His forgiveness sincerely, He will always forgive. Lesson Assessment: 1. What does al-Tawwāb mean? Ans: The Most Forgiving. 2. How does al-Tawwāb differ from the forgiveness of mankind? Ans: Humans have limited patience. They will stop forgiving once they run out of patience. However, Allah will always forgive as long as His servants ask for forgiveness sincerely.

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Al- Nasr LESSON 5: BE FORGIVING LIKE GOD Introduction: The focus of this activity is on the importance of imitating God in His forgiveness. Set Induction: Previously, we have learned about how Allah is the Most Forgiving. At the same time, Allah expects us to also be forgiving. But why? What are the consequences if we do not become forgiving like Allah? Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to explain the importance of being forgiving. Materials: 1. Sandwich-sized Ziploc bag 2. Vinegar 3. Warm water 4. Measuring cups 5. Baking soda 6. Tissue – like Kleenex Procedure: 1. Add 1/4 cup warm water to a plastic Ziploc sandwich bag. 2. Vinegar is next. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the same bag. 3. Measure out 3 tsp of baking soda and dump that in the centre of a tissue. 4. Fold up the tissue around the baking soda. 5. I did not find that the explosion was very big, but please have kids use safety goggles if you are concerned. 6. Working quickly, drop the folded tissue into the bag and close it completely. 7. Step back. 8. If the reaction doesn’t happen quickly, shake the bag to agitate it and start the chemical reaction. Lessons: 1. This lesson is about forgiveness. 2. The experiment setup represents our heart. If we confine anger and hurt inside, we will only hurt ourselves. 3. Why do we forgive? Because Allah wants us to. If we imitate Allah in His perfection, we too can be more perfect than we initially are. 4. Also, because by forgiving others, we are allowing ourselves to be happy and unburdened with grudge.
