ILQ | Teachers’ Book Quraish SURAH 106: QURAISH ‫سورة قريش‬ The Quraish Tribe Learning Outcomes: At the end of this Surah, the students will learn: 1. To remind about Allah’s blessings. 2. Ways to worship Allah. SURAH OVERVIEW “Quraish” is the name of the tribe of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). This surah is a Meccan surah. The surah was revealed to remind the Quraish tribe of the blessings from Allah that they are enjoying. These blessings that Allah refers to in this surah are peace and safety from hunger. The Quraish were free to travel for trade and feed themselves with all kinds of products from the East and West of the Arab peninsula. This comfortable situation is related to the historical event mentioned in Surah al-Fiil. Because Allah protected the Kaabah from being attacked, people from all over the world understand that the Kaabah is sacred. As a result, they, too, revere it and respect the Quraish, who were the custodians of the Kaabah. Thus, the Quraish were able to live and travel in peace and security. There are four main points in the surah:

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Quraish TAFSIR CORNER 1. Mentioning the Blessings Enjoyed by the Quraish: “For the security of the Quraish,” Allah begins the surah by reminding the Quraish that He has blessed them with security. One of the wisdom of Allah is that He would begin an important message by clearly addressing its recipient so the message will be understood. 2. Ease of Travelling in Different Seasons: “Secure in their winter and summer journeys.” Not only were the Quraish secure in Mecca, they were also granted safety in their travels. The Quraish would travel to Yemen in the winter and Syria in the summer for trade. Allah protected their journeys from attacks by robbers, severe weather, and so on. This secured trade allowed them to expand their wealth. 3. Call of Worship: “Let them worship the Lord of this House,” Allah commands the Quraish to worship Him as a gesture of gratefulness. The Quraish were blessed with security, the noble position of custodians of the Kaabah, and the honour of Allah’s Prophet is chosen from among them – the Quraish should be the most grateful people in the world. 4. A reminder of the blessings of Allah: “Who gave them food against hunger, and made them secure from fear.” Not only does Allah allow them to have a free ride and live to see the important events of Islam as well as enjoy its benefits, He also generously preserves and sustains their life with all sorts of food from all places. He also keeps them safe from any fear of the uncertainty of life. This is a reminder to the Quraish, who were readily aware of the great importance of the Kaabah and its effects on their lives. At the moment of danger and difficulty, the Quraish used to appeal only to the Lord of that House and seek only His help. However, when comfort was theirs, they easily forgot where the blessings came from. Thus, this simple reminder was sent from Allah to them, and to us too, for the security and blessings we enjoy in our life.

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Quraish LESSON 1: GAME – TRADING VILLAGE Introduction: In verse 1, the focus will be on the recalling of the blessings of the Quraysh. This will be the focus of lesson 1. Set Induction: In the first verse, Allah has mentioned the blessings that are enjoyed by the Quraysh tribe. But what are the blessings? And why are the blessings a blessing? Let us do an activity to understand this blessing. Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the blessings that have been provided to the Quraysh. Materials: 1. Goods and Merchandise Procedure: 1. Ask the students to bring something from their home that they can sell to their friends and teachers. 2. Set up tables and chairs as sale booths in class. 3. Students can display their goods and prices. 4. The teacher can invite other teachers and administrators to come in as buyers. 5. The money from the sale can either be taken by the parents or donated to any charity box. Lessons: 1. This activity is related to verse 1 which mentions the blessings of the Quraysh, which is the ease to travel anywhere. 2. Why is this a blessing? Because the Arab peninsula is not actually a hospitable place. Therefore, they must find their life supply elsewhere. 3. The ease of travel, therefore, is a very great blessing to such a people. Lesson Assessment: Formative: Ask the students about the blessings of the Quraysh. Suggestions: 1. What are the blessings that Allah has provided for the Quraysh? Summative: Ask about the relevance of the blessing as a blessing. Suggestion: 2. Why is easy travelling a blessing? Ans: Because it allows them to find for themselves food and all other equipment of life.

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Quraish LESSON 2: EXERCISE – ESCAPE THE MINEFIELD Introduction: Verse 2 addresses multiple topics in a single verse. Here, we will focus on the manner with which the blessings are acquired by the Quraish – which is through travel. Set Induction: In verse 2, Allah has mentioned the blessing of easy travel for the Quraysh. However, this travel is only easy if a condition is fulfilled. What is the condition? And why does Allah put a condition in acquiring His blessings? Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Explain the relevance of easy travel as a blessing. 2. Identify the condition required to be fulfilled to acquire the blessing mentioned in the surah Materials: 1. Blindfold or piece of cloth 2. All sorts of objects Procedure: 1. For this exercise, you need a large empty area. Fill the area with obstacles such as chairs, boxes or anything else you have in class. This area is the “minefield”. 2. The students are divided into a few pairs. A student from every pair wears a blindfold. 3. The blindfolded member then has to navigate through the minefield while their partner verbally guides them safely through it. Lessons: 1. Part of the Quraish tribe’s strength is being united. 2. Allah put conditions on all blessings that He has promised. For example, to excel academically, we must be hardworking; to eat, we must find the food; etc. 3. Why does Allah put such conditions to His blessings? Because only those who are worthy can enjoy His blessings. And to be worthy, we must fulfil the condition. 4. The Quraysh were initially the worthy people to be the custodian of the Kaabah. However, once they turned away from the true religion, they have stripped themselves from worthiness. This is a lesson that we will see in verse 3 and 4. 5. Aside from obedience, cooperation is also a condition to live successfully in a hostile environment. Lesson Assessment: Formative: Ask the students about the relevance of easy travel as a blessing. Suggestion: 1. Why is easy travel a blessing? Ans: Because it allows us to find things that are not available in our place. Summative: Ask the students to identify the condition required to be fulfilled to acquire the blessing mentioned in the surah.

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Quraish Suggestion: 2. What made the Quraysh worthy of the blessings? Ans: Because they were the custodians of the Kaabah. 3. Why are they not worthy then? Ans: Because they no longer obeyed Allah.

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Quraish LESSON 3: D.I.Y - PAPER GLOBE Introduction: Here, the focus will be on the geography of the Quraysh’s residence area. This geography allows them to travel in both summer and winter to provide themselves with all sorts of blessings. Set Induction: In verse 2, Allah mentions that the blessing of the Quraysh is the ease of travel. How is travelling made easy for them? Does the location of their city play a role? Let us find out! Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Pinpoint the location of Makkah in the globe. 2. Explains the geographical factors that contribute to the possibility of travel in summer and winter. Materials: 1. 2 paper bowls 2. Thread 3. Glue 4. Scissors 5. A world map Procedure: 1. Glue 2 bowls together with the thread in between. 2. Then, cut the world map to fit the glued bowls. 3. Next, glue the map to the bowl. 4. Voila! You have your own Earth model! Lessons: 1. Allah has created the earth for us to benefit from, enjoy and protect. 2. He does so by way of knowledge. With knowledge of the world, we could know about the changes of seasons and other things. 3. For example, when we know about the times when the winds will be blowing strongly, we could plan our travel to face the strong winds. 4. Therefore, being in a place where the wind is averagely mild allows us to travel easily. 5. Also, knowing about the advantages of our geographical position also allows us to achieve the same aim. Aside from obedience, cooperation is also a condition to live successfully in a hostile environment. Lesson Assessment: Formative: Ask the students to make a globe and pinpoint the location of Makkah. Suggestions: 1. Ask them to pinpoint some other locations as well to make the activity more interesting. Summative: Ask the students to explain the geographical factors that contribute to the possibility of

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Quraish travel in summer and winter. Suggestions: 2. What is the element that creates summer and winter? Ans: the wind. 3. Where do winds come from? The wind is produced due to the rapid rotation of the Earth. How do the winds change the weather? Ans: strong wind carries cold air to our place, resulting in winter. And weak winds create hotter weather, resulting in summer.

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Quraish LESSON 4: GAME – SUPERWIND Introduction: The next 3 activities will focus on the three aspects of verse 2: (a) the role of wind in creating seasons; (b) riḥlah; and (c) trading. Here, the activity focuses on the role of wind in creating summer and winter. Set Induction: In verse 2, Allah says that the Quraysh could travel in any season – be it in the summer or in the winter. But how do the Quraysh travel in these different seasons? Let us play this game to find the answer. Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Identify the role of wind as the enabler of travel. 2. Explain how wind helps travellers to travel around the world in different seasons. Materials: 1. Cotton balls 2. Craft sticks 3. Pieces of ribbon 4. Leaves 5. Straw Procedure: 1. Mark a start and finish line. Or for older students, you can draw a course/track. 2. This is a competitive race experiment. Divide into groups of four. 3. Each person in a group gets one of these materials. 4. Everyone sits at the starting line. 5. Everyone blows their different objects with a straw until the objects reach the finish line. 6. See who wins the race. Lessons: 1. The wind is Allah’s creation. It can help move and support the movement of boats, aeroplanes, birds, and for plant seeds to spread and grow. 2. By studying the movement of the wind, we can know in which direction the wind will move our transports. 3. So, for example, when the wind is blowing to the East, we can set our course to eastern sites. Lesson Assessment: Formative: Ask the students about the directions of the wind in different seasons. 1. Show the students a video about the monsoon winds. Based on the video, ask them to identify the different types of wind. Summative: Ask the students how to travel in the past and move from a place to other far away places. 1. How does the wind move a ship?

ILQ | Teachers’ Book Quraish LESSON 5: REHLAH - TRIPS Introduction: Here, the focus will be on the travel (riḥlah) aspect of verse 2. How does trading things help us to acquire all sorts of things? Let us do this activity to find out. Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to explain the basic mechanism of the microeconomy. Procedure: 1. It’s the trip day! Bring the students on a short trip to any factories nearby. 2. Let the students explore how the goods are being made and sold. 3. If there are no factories available in your area, you can try bringing the students to any mall, shop lots or somewhere they can walk, learn about trading and business while having fun. Lessons: 1. This activity expands on the Trading Village activity from Week 1. 2. It lets the students learn about trading in a fun and experiential manner. 3. By trading (buying and selling), we can acquire the things that we want but could not produce on our own. 4. In the meantime, by selling the things that we can produce, we are providing for others the things that they want and need. 5. With this complex interaction of buying and selling, people can get what they want while at the same time provide for others what the others want. Lesson Assessment: Formative: Ask the students about the reasons behind trading. Suggestions: 1. Why do we buy things? Ans: Because there are things that we want and need, but we cannot produce it ourselves. 2. Why do people sell things? Ans: Because there are things that they can produce but do not need. So, they sell them to others who need it. Meanwhile, they can buy other things that they want from the money that they get by selling. Summative: Ask the students about the significance of trading. Suggestions. 1. What benefits can trading provide for us? Ans: Trading helps the members of a community to provide for themselves the things that they could not acquire on their own. This they do by cooperating with each other

Mark these openings on your sketch and erase those portions of the wall outline. 3. Use the symbols above to draw in the doors and windows. Thicken your outline for the walls to show they are solid. 4. You can add furniture to your sketch by drawing their shapes as seen from above. Make sure your plan drawing works like a map, so it shows their correct locations in the room. Lessons: 1. Even though buildings are 3-D spaces, architects use 2-D drawings to create their designs and organize their ideas. A floor plan is a 2-D drawing of a building or room from an overhead view. 2.
