ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah SURAH 98: AL-BAYYINAH سورة البينة THE CLEAR PROOF Learning Outcomes: At the end of this Surah, the students will learn that: 1. Islam provides clear proof. And truth must be with proofs. 2. We must follow what we know to be the truth. When we have believed that the Qur'an is true, we must obey it in action too. 3. Allah sent Prophet Muhammad to us with the same message that He sent to all other Prophets before him. 4. It is our duty as Allah’s creation to surrender ourselves to Him by worshipping Him. Overview of Surah al-Bayyinah: Surah al-Bayyinah is a Medinan surah. “al-Bayyinah” means The Clear Proof. This is a surah that describes the response of the unbelievers when they were presented with the proofs of Islam. And these unbelievers were the People of the Book (the Jews and Christians) and the idolaters (Musyrikin). When the proof of Islam came, they started to be divided, bickering with each other. Fathers and children went about their own ways. Family relationships were cut off because some of the family members chose to embrace Islam while others were stubborn to be in their misled ways. And tribes fought with each other. What is the proof of Islam? It is the prophet and the Quran, both of which together make up the Proof. Before Islam, everyone held on strongly to tribal and familial sentiment. These ties were very strong such that even when one of their tribe or family members did wrong against other tribes and families, they would still have their tribe’s and family’s backs. When Islam came, however, these false ties inevitably broke. When Islam came, the only truth that people hold on to is Islam. Therefore, everything must be decided according to the standards of Islam. Whenever there are people who do wrong things, even if they are Muslims, they will surely be judged and held responsible based on the laws of Islam. Truth does not side with anyone but itself. Whoever refuses to abide by the truth and keep on being stubborn in falsehood will surely be thrown into hell. Whereas, for those who have taqwā, they will enter Paradise.
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah WEEK 1 In week 1, the concepts and themes that are at the center of the discussion are the concepts of “truth”, “uprightness”, “proof” and the disbelievers’ response towards the da’wah of the Prophet. The religion of Islam came as the “true” religion. And this is “proven” by the presence of the Quran and the Prophet. They both presented Islam as an “upright” religion. Reacting to the new religion, the disbelievers distanced themselves from the Prophet and the Quran. And they even broke apart from each other when some members of their families and tribes embraced Islam. TAFSIR CORNER Ayah 1: The Disbelievers Were United Until the Proof of Islam Came. The disbelievers from the People of the Book and the polytheists were not going to desist ˹from disbelief˺ until the clear proof came to them: (98:1) The unbelievers were once a united lot. Unfortunately, their unity was not based on truth. Instead, it was based on worldly utilitarianism. They were able to tolerate each other’s falsehood because this condition enabled them to flourish economically and in worldly wealth. However, when Islam came, it provided a new foundation on which people can unite. But because the conditions that Islam has set forth were opposing their beliefs, they started to be divided. LESSON 1: STORY-TELLING To know the concept of proof, and its effect in separating the true from wrong, lets introduce the concept of proof, and relate it with the general theme of the surah. At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to: 1. Know the concept of proof 2. Able to explain the general themes of the Surah. Do you wonder…? Surah al-Bayyinah means Proof. Can you tell a story about a detective who found a proof? *Teacher will guide those who wants to story-tell.
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah In this lesson, teachers may story-tell (based on the given video below at appendix) or play a video. Tell the story of Bayyinah, the Quran and Prophet who came to separate the believers from the disbelievers. Discussion: 1. What does the surah describe? Ans: The situation of the disbelievers. 2. What was the response of the disbelievers? Ans: They became disunited. 3. Who were the disbelievers? Ans: The People of the Book (ahl al-kitāb) and the idol worshippers (mushrikīn). LESSON 2: PROOF BINGO Previously, we have learned about the themes of the surah. One of the themes is about proof. Islam is a religion that comes with a proof of its truth. How do proofs work? Let us play a game to understand this. At the end of the lesson, student will be able to: 1. Exercise logical thinking to win. 2. Explain how the Quran employs logic to prove its truth. Activity: Proof Bingo Materials: Bingo Sheet @ at appendix printed. Procedure: 1. Like regular Bingo, the first student to fill out their sheet with a line is the winner. 2. Instead of sitting down and listening to the teacher, they have to walk around asking question in their Bingo Sheets. 3. First, students walk around the class asking questions in their bingo sheet. 4. If the answer is “yes”, they mark X on their Bingo sheet. 5. Next, they have to ask a different person another question in the ESL Bingo sheet. 6. Finally, the first student with a line presents it to the teacher and wins.
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah Lesson: 1. When Islam came, it presented itself with proofs that confirm its truth. 2. So, whoever has a sound mind will immediately know that this is indeed the true religion. 3. This activity trains the students to exercise logical thinking. 4. They have to devise their own logical strategy to find out how to win. 5. The intellect (ʿaql) is a gift from Allah. Only with the proper use of the intellect can we truly understand, appreciate, and affirm the truth of Islam. Assessment: 1. Students thinking critically in finding ways to win. 2. What is the role of the ʿaql in religion? Ans: to understand and affirm the proofs of Islam.
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah TAFSIR CORNER: Ayah 2: A Messenger Bringing a Holy Scripture. ﴾ً﴿ َر ُسو ٌل ِم َن ٱَّ َّل ِل َي ْتلُوا ُص ُحفًا ُّم َط َّه َرة “a messenger from Allah, reciting scrolls of ˹utmost˺ purity,” (98:2) The proof intended by Allah in this surah refers to none other than the Prophet and the Quran. The Quran is a holy scripture because it came from Allah, brought by the noble Jibril, which guarantees the Quran’s being free from errors and falsehood. This holiness is then exemplified by the Prophet through his actions. Ayah 3: The Highly Valued Writings. ﴾ٌ﴿فِي َها ُكتُ ٌب َقيِ َمة “containing upright commandments.” (98:3) The writings mentioned here are the unchanging laws, commandments, and prohibitions in the Quran. The Quran is an epistle which compiles in it all of the teachings that were revealed to the previous prophets. It is also the decisive criterion which puts all of the previous teachings in their proper places (muṣaddiqan limā bayna yadayhi wa mā khalfahum). All of the previous teachings were elaborated further in the Quran. LESSON 3: DIFFERENT WAVELENGTH We have learned about the concept of proof in the previous lesson. We have also learned about the role of the intellect in affirming the truth of the religion. However, not everyone wants to acknowledge the truth of Islam even though their intellect has already affirmed its truth. How so? Let us take a look. At the end of the lesson, student will be able to: 1. Describe the situation of the disbelievers in responding to the proofs of Islam. 2. Explain the concept of light refraction. Different Wavelength Materials: 1. White light (phone flashlight) 2. Prism. 3. A dark room.
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah Procedure: 1. Put a prism on a table. 2. Turn off the room light. 3. Turn on your phone flashlight and direct it towards the side of the prism. 4. Make sure the light is refracted to the wall. 5. Observe the result. Discussion: 1. There are actually different types of light. Some are visible and some are not. 2. Even in the visible ones, different colors of light travel in different wavelengths. 3. The differences in wavelengths influence their travel speed. And when lights with different speeds go through the same object (the prism), they are refracted in different angles. 4. Hence, there are different colors observable. When in normal condition, these lights travel together and are observable as a single white ray. 5. The light represents the proof of Islam. 6. The prism represents the human intellect. 7. And the refracted lights represent the different responses that humans give when the proof comes. 8. Some people accepted the proofs of Islam and left their old religion without a second thought. 9. While others were stubborn because they didn’t want to lose their wealth and position. 10. So, even when the intellect already affirms the truth of Islam, it depends on the heart to accept it or not. 11. A good heart accepts Islam without problem. Meanwhile, a black heart clings very dearly to worldly pleasures. Exercise: 1. Why do we have different colors of light? 2. How does a prism refract a single white ray into different colors? 3. How does the activity represent the situation of the disbelievers? 4. Why do people accept the proof of Islam differently?
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah TAFSIR CORNER: Ayah 4: The People of the Book Were Also Divided. ﴾ُ﴿ َو َما تَفَ َّر َق ٱ َّل ِذي َن أُوتُوا ٱ ْل ِكتَ ٰـ َب إََِّّل ِم ۢن بَ ْع ِد َما َجآ َء ْت ُه ُم ٱ ْلبَ ِي َنة “It was not until this clear proof came to the People of the Book that they became divided ˹about his prophethood˺.” The People of the Book never quarrelled among themselves except after the coming of Islam. This is because when Islam came, they had no other choice but to acknowledge the truth of Islam, even though they did not want to. Consequently, they quarrelled among themselves on how to procure the best refutations to Islam. LESSON 4: SPUD GAME Previously, we have looked into the various responses given by the disbelievers. If a single truth is responded to in many different ways by the members of a society, what would happen to the society? They will be ununited and disorganized. How so? Let us play a game to understand this. At the end of the lesson, student will be able to: 1. Explain the effects of the coming of the truth as disuniting the people. 2. Point out the disuniting factor. Spud Game Materials: 1. Ball 2. Cones Procedure: 1. See: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=FCqD8XxFD-Y 2. Reflect on the game. Discussion: 1. In verse 4, Allah says that the disbelievers will be divided among themselves when the proof of Islam comes. 2. In this game, division is pictured with the players moving away from the thrower. 3. Similarly, the disbelievers move away from truth when it was brought to them. 4. The factor that divided them was their own arrogance in accepting the truth of Islam.
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah Exercise: 1. What are the responses of the disbelievers when the truth of Islam came? Ans: they refused to accept it. 2. Why did they reject Islam? Ans: because their arrogance stopped them from acknowledging the truth of Islam. 3. When they rejected Islam, what happened to their society? Ans: They got divided among themselves.
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah TAFSIR CORNER: Ayah 5: They Were Ordered Only to Worship Allah, to Pray, And to Pay Alms. ﴾﴿ َو َمآ أُ ِم ُر ٓوا إََِّّل ِل َي ْعبُدُوا ٱَّ َّل َل ُم ْخ ِل ِصي َن لَهُ ٱل ِدي َن ُح َنفَآ َء َويُ ِقي ُموا ٱل َّص َل ٰوةَ َويُ ْؤتُوا ٱل َّز َك ٰوةَ ۚ َو ٰذَ ِل َك ِدي ُن ٱ ْل َق ِي َم ِة “even though they were only commanded to worship Allah ˹alone˺ with sincere devotion to Him in all uprightness, establish prayer, and pay alms-tax. That is the upright Way.” The People of the book were not even given a difficult commandment. They were only to acknowledge the truth of Islam; to worship Allah, to perform prayers, and to pay zakat. All of which would strip them from their status as the sole custodians and interpreter of God’s words. They did not want to acknowledge the Prophet because they wanted to keep the authority, power, and respect for themselves. LESSON 5: DIY SKETCH BOOK In the previous lesson, we have learned about the responses of the disbelievers towards the proof of Islam. In what form does the proof come? In the form of a book and a man, namely the Prophet. At the end of the lesson, student will be able to: 1. Identify the forms in which the proof of Islam came. 2. Give reasons on the coming of the proof in the said form. D.I.Y SKETCH BOOK Materials: 1. Sketch papers. 2. Designed scrapbook papers. 3. Scissors. 4. Ruler. 5. Graph board. 6. Long arm stapler. 7. Utility knife. Procedure: 1. First, stack some A4 sketch papers. Fold them in half. 2. Then, take a designed scrapbook paper and cover the folded papers. This paper serves as the book cover. 3. Staple the bone with a long arm stapler. 4. Trim the excess papers using a utility knife.
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=tn_Hq4nfOk8 Discussion: 1. In verse 2, Allah mentions that the proof of Islam is the Prophet and the Quran. 2. And in the proof, there are the laws and the books. 3. This activity is to make a book, for the Quran itself is a book. 4. But why was the Quran revealed in a book form? Because books record things. 5. And once things are recorded, there can be no change upon it. 6. Instead, these recorded things are the one that has the power to change societies. Exercise: 1. In what form was the proof of Islam revealed? Ans: a book. 1. Why was the Quran revealed in the form of a book? Ans: see lesson 4-6. LESSON 6: UPRIGHT BALLOON Previously, we have seen that the proof that was brought before the disbelievers made the religion of Islam upright. Furthermore, it has the power to change societies. But from what to what? Let us find out! At the end of the lesson, student will be able to: 1. Identify the characteristic of the religion of Islam as being upright. 2. Explain the meaning of uprightness and its virtues. The Upright religion Materials: 1. Balloons. 2. Coins. Refer Activity Video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/132vIa_klElsvq1UvhoqxaQuoha4bkOkG/view?usp=sharin g Procedure: 1. Firstly, blow a balloon. 2. Secondly, blow another balloon with the same size. This time put a coin inside the balloon. 3. Next, hit the empty balloon straight up so that it flies upward. When it is falling, keep hitting it upward in a straight manner. 4. Now, try the same thing with the balloon with a coin inside. Is it as easy?
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah Discussion: 1. In verse 4, Allah mentions that Islam is the upright religion, “al-dīn al-qayyimah”. 2. The empty balloon represents the religion of Islam. It is an upright religion. Therefore, it is easy to support. 3. The coin-filled balloon represents falsehood. Falsehood is difficult to support. 4. The religion of Islam, therefore, is an upright religion and it changes a wretched society to be upright. Exercise: 1. Why does a coin-filled balloon is harder to balance? Ans: Because the coin inside makes the center of gravity always changing. Therefore, the balloon cannot be stable. 2. What makes Islam stable? Ans: Because it has unchanging principles. 3. Why are unchanging principles important? Ans: Because only with a stable foundation can something true be built upon. Just like only a solid ground can support a building.
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah TAFSIR CORNER: Ayah 6: The Punishments for the Disbelievers. ﴾﴿إِ َّن ٱ َّل ِذي َن َكفَ ُروا ِم ْن أَ ْه ِل ٱ ْل ِكتَ ٰـ ِب َوٱ ْل ُم ْش ِر ِكي َن فِى َنا ِر َج َه َّن َم َخ ٰـ ِل ِدي َن فِي َهآ ۚ أُولَ ٰـٓئِ َك ُه ْم َش ُّر ٱ ْل َب ِريَّ ِة “Indeed, those who disbelieve from the People of the Book and the polytheists will be in the Fire of Hell, to stay there forever. They are the worst of ˹all˺ beings.” These people are the worst of creations (sharr al-bariyyah). This is because they were stubborn to be in the darkness of falsehood, despite the presence of the light of truth as per presented to them. Ayah 7: The Rewards of the Believers. ﴾﴿إِ َّن ٱلَّ ِذي َن َءا َمنُوا َو َع ِملُوا ٱل َّص ٰـ ِل َح ٰـ ِت أُو َل ٰـٓئِ َك هُ ْم َخ ْي ُر ٱ ْل َب ِر َيّ ِة “Indeed, those who believe and do good—they are the best of ˹all˺ beings.” However, for those who, with their healthy minds and sound reasons, acknowledged the truth of Islam, they will be given an unlimited reward. And they are the best of creations (khayr al- bariyyah). Ayah 8: Allah is Pleased with Them. ﴾ُ﴿ َج َزآ ُؤ ُه ْم ِعندَ َربِ ِه ْم َج ّنَ ٰـ ُت َع ْد ٍن تَ ْج ِرى ِمن تَ ْحتِ َها ٱ ْْلَ ْن َه ٰـ ُر َخ ٰـ ِل ِدي َن فِي َهآ أَ َبدًا ۖ َّر ِض َى ٱَّ َّللُ َع ْن ُه ْم َو َر ُضوا َع ْنهُ ۚ ٰذَ ِل َك ِل َم ْن َخ ِش َى َربَّ ۥه “Their reward with their Lord will be Gardens of Eternity, under which rivers flow, to stay there for ever and ever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. This is ˹only˺ for those in awe of their Lord.” Their reward is a heavenly residence in Paradise, in which they will reside for eternity. They are those who are satisfied (riḍā) with Islam, submitting themselves to Allah. And this submission is the real freedom in the truest sense of the word. As a result, Allah is also satisfied with them. LESSON 7: SCAN WORD Previously, we have learned about the Quran as a correction for a wretched society. How does the Quran do that? Let us find out! At the end of the lesson, student will be able to give arguments on the role of the Quran as the differentiator between truth and falsehood, good and evil. Scan Word
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah Materials: 1. Black marker 2. Paper 3. Double tape Procedure: 1. Write words as shown below or the teacher can write any suitable words on the paper by using the marker. 2. Paste it at the wall. 3. Ask students to stand 3meter away from the paper. 4. Ask them to read. They will be easy to read at the first three layers because the words are clear and big but the other layer, it will give them difficulty to read. Discussion: 1. This activity is to reflect verse 3, “Containing correct scriptures”. 2. Allah with His raḥmah and mercy helps us to look at right and wrong clearly with al-Quran. 3. So, al-Quran brings us out from the darkness of ambiguity to the light of clarity, min al-ẓulumāt ilā al-nūr. Exercise: 1. What is the role of the Quran? Ans: The criterion between truth and falsehood. How does the Quran play its role as a criterion between truth and falsehood? Ans: By differentiating between what is true and what is false. LESSON 8 We have learned about the Quran as a proof of Islam. We have looked at how disbelievers reject the proof of Islam. And they are characterized by disunity. But what about those who accept the proof of Islam? What are their characteristics? Let us find out! At the end of the lesson, student will be able to identify the characteristics of believers of the proof of Islam. Activity: Sing together with students and make them have spirit to love al-Quran: https://www.youtube.com /watch?v=adZ5t4tfW0k Discussion:

When someone accepts the proof of Islam, what are the characteristics that they have? Ans: They are united on the truth. And they love the proof, namely the Quran. LESSON 9: LETS MURAJA’AH 1. Give the students a few pieces of paper. 2. Ask them to draw or paste any materials related with surah such as several of icon surah. They were also encouraged to write surah lessons of surah. 3. They may decorate and write based on their understanding toward the Surah. LESSON 10 We have learned about one of the characteristics of Muslims. They love the Quran. What are other characteristics that Muslims have when they accept and love the Quran? Let us find out! At the end of the lesson, student will be able to explain the effects of accepting the proof of Islam. Complete the puzzle Materials: 1. Printed pictures. 2. Scissors. 3. Glue. 4. Plain A4 paper. Procedure: 1. Provide the students pieces of printed paper pictures from the portal. 2. Teachers cut the printed picture to 10-12 pieces. 3. Let students be in a small group. 4. Ask the students to match all the pieces until it become one complete puzzle.
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah Discussion: 1. Surah al-Bayyinah is a Medinan surah. “al-Bayyinah” means proof. 2. The surah describes the situation of the disbelievers when the proof of Islam came. 3. If the disbelievers were disunited, what about the Muslims? They are surely united. 4. And this unity is observable in the pieces of puzzle that are united and organized to form a beautiful picture. Exercise: 1. What happened to the disbelievers when they rejected the proof of Islam? 2. What happened to the Muslims when they accepted the proof of Islam? Ans: the situation of the disbelievers. 3. What was the response of the disbelievers? Ans: they became disunited. 4. Who were the disbelievers? Ans: The People of the Book (ahl al-kitāb) and the idol worshippers (mushrikīn). LESSON 11: KEBAB ON A STICK Previously, we have learned about the effects of Islam to the believers. They become more united. But why is being united so important? Let us find out! Cut bread and cheese into cubes.
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah 2. Skewer on a stick with sliced chicken meat and other ingredient choices (tomatoes, lettuce, etc.) 3. Ask students to share the food with their friends and family members. Discussion: 1. Being united is a blessing. This is because by being united, we can do anything with more strength. 2. For the believers, this means being able to worship Allah with more ease and motivation. 3. And this strength can be achieved only with the spirit of brotherhood (ukhuwwah). 4. And the spirit of ukhuwwah is achievable when we share the blessings of Allah with each other. Exercise:
ILQ | Teacher’s Book Al-Bayyinah CONCLUSION OF SURAH AL-BAYYINAH: Islam came to emancipate mankind from the slavery of their own ignorance. And it is based on this truth that they should be united.
