The Meaning of the Surah The Most High 2
ِمۡسِب ٱلَّلِ ٱل َّر ۡ َح ٰـ ِن ٱل َّر ِحي ِم 2 َخ َل َق َف َس َّو ٰى َّ ا ْلَ ْ َع 1 َس ّبِ ِح ا ْس َم َر ّبِ َك ا ِل َوا َّ ِلي َق َّد َر َف َه َد ٰى َ 3وا َّ ِلي أَ ْخ َر َج الْ َم ْر َ ٰع 4 فَ َج َع َل ُه ُغ َثا ًء أَ ْح َو ٰى َ 5س ُن ْقرِئُ َك َف َل تَن َ ٰس 6 7 َيْ َ ٰف َو َما ا ْ َل ْه َر َي ْع َل ُم إِنَّ ُه ۚ الَّ ُل َشا َء َما َّ إِل َونُ َي ِّ ُس َك لِلْ ُي ْ َس ٰى 8فَ َذ ّكِ ْر إِن َّن َف َع ِت ال ِّذ ْك َر ٰى 9 َس َي َّذ َّك ُر َمن َيْ َ ٰش َ 10و َي َت َج َّن ُب َها ا ْلَ ْش َق 11 13 َيْ َ ٰي َو َل فِي َها َي ُمو ُت َ ُث َّم 12 الْ ُك ْ َب ٰى النَّا َر يَ ْص َل َّ ل ا ِلي بَ ْل تُ ْؤثِ ُرو َن ا ْ َل َيا َة ال ُّدنْ َيا َ 16وا ْل ِخ َر ُة َخ ْ ٌي َو َأبْ َ ٰق 17 َق ْد أَفْلَ َح َمن تَ َز َّ ٰك َ 14و َذ َك َر ا ْس َم َر ّبِهِ فَ َص َّ ٰل 15 إِ َّن َهٰ َذا لَ ِف ال ُّص ُح ِف ا ْلُو َ ٰل ُ 18ص ُح ِف إِبْ َراهِي َم َو ُمو َ ٰس19 3
Verse 1 Tasbih 4
1 1 َس ّبِ ِح ا ْس َم َر ّبِ َك ا ْلَ ْ َع Praise the Name of your Lord, the Most High. Allah commanded the Prophet to praise Him by mentioning His beautiful names. 5
Verse 2&3 Creates and Perfects 6
2&3 2 فَ َس َّو ٰى َخ َل َق َّ ا ِل He who creates and regulates. 3 َوا َّ ِلي َق َّد َر َف َه َد ٰى He who measures and guides. Allah has created everything perfectly, suitable to each’s purpose of existence. 7
Verse 4&5 Fresh and Withered 8
Verse 6 Reciting the Quran 10
6 6 َس ُن ْق ِرئُ َك َف َل تَن َ ٰس We will make you read, until you do not forget, Allah teaches the Quran to the Prophet by planting it in his heart. 11
Verse 7 The Seen and The Unseen 12
7 7 َيْ َ ٰف َو َما ا ْ َل ْه َر َي ْعلَ ُم إِنَّ ُه ۚ الَّ ُل َشا َء َما َّ إِل Except what God wills. He knows what is declared, and what is hidden. Allah knows everything – both visible things and invisible ones. 13
Verse 8 Heaven 14
8 8 َونُ َي ِّ ُس َك لِلْ ُي ْ َس ٰى We will ease you into the Easy Way. Allah also eases the religion of Islam to be practiced. Furthermore, He will ease the way to Heaven for the Prophet. 15
Verse 12&13 The Residents of Hell 20
12&13 12 الْ ُك ْ َب ٰى النَّا َر يَ ْص َل َّ ا ِلي He who will enter the Enormous Fire, 13 َيْ َ ٰي َو َل فِي َها َي ُمو ُت َ ُث َّم ل Where he will neither die, nor live. For those who rebel against the message, they will reside in Hell and punished gravely forever. 21
Verse 14&15 Dhikr 22
14&15 14 َق ْد أَفْ َل َح َمن تَ َز َّ ٰك Successful is he who purifies himself. 15 َو َذ َك َر ا ْس َم َر ّبِهِ َف َص َّ ٰل And mentions the name of his Lord, and prays. On the other and, as for those who obey His commands, they are the successful people. 23
Verse 16&17 Love of Dunya 24
16&17 16 بَ ْل تُ ْؤثِ ُرو َن ا ْ َل َيا َة ال ُّد ْن َيا But (most of) you prefer the present life. 17 َوا ْل ِخ َر ُة َخ ْ ٌي َو َأ ْب َ ٰق Though the Hereafter is better, and more lasting. Most of us choose this world over the next, even when it is already told that the hereafter is far better than this world. 25
Verse 18&19 The Kitab of Prophet Ibrahim & Musa 26
18&19 18 إِ َّن َهٰ َذا لَ ِف ال ُّص ُح ِف ا ْ ُلو َ ٰل This is in the former scriptures. 19ُص ُح ِف إِبْ َراهِي َم َو ُمو َ ٰس The Scriptures of Abraham and Moses. This reminder is not something new. In fact, it has already been told in previous revelations – like the kitab of Prophet Musa and Ibrahim. 27
Surah Summary Surah al-Alā reminds the Prophet to preoccupy himself more with remembering Allah by praising His names. It also promises “al-Yusra” (Heaven) to the Prophet and those who follow him. As for those who oppose him, their fate is not so lucky. 28
Tasbih = praise Create = produce, design declared = seen by the eye, visible. hidden = unseen, invisible reminder = advice, admonition 1. We must always remember Allah by praising His names. 2. We must always heed and obey the commandments and the reminders 29
