ILQ | Teachers’ Book Al- Masad SURAH 111: AL-MASAD سورة المسد THE FIRE Learning Outcomes: At the end of this Surah, the students will learn: 1. The story of Abu Lahab and his wife towards the Prophet. 2. The descriptions of The Fire. 3. How Allah protect Prophet Muhammad SAW. SURAH OVERVIEW Al-Masad was revealed in Mecca, making it a Meccan surah. “al-Masad” means fire. It refers to the punishment promised by Allah to one of Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺuncles, Abu Lahab. The surah also addresses his wife, Arwa, and promised her severe punishment as well Abu Lahab and Arwa were among those who opposed the Prophet Muhammad ﷺwith great hatred for many years. They repeatedly cursed him and tried to hurt him physically as well. They refused to repent to Allah even until their deaths. TAFSIR CORNER 1. The damnation towards Abu Lahab and his circle: “Doomed are the hands of Abū Lahab; doomed is he.” The surah begins with its ultimate purpose, that is, to reply to Abu Lahab’s attacks on the Prophet. It declares the certain destruction that will fall upon him. In Arabic, the word “hands” can mean not only physical hands but also his deeds. 2. The frivolity of his possessions: “Neither his wealth nor his gains will help him.” Abu Lahab believed that his wealth and his gains will save him from the punishment promised to him. “Gains” in this context, according to Ibn Abbas, means his sons. It can also mean his status. But Allah firmly denies that possibility. No worldly possession or position could save him. 3. The description of what awaits him: “He shall have to endure a flaming fire,” He will be thrown into the hell of “Saʿir”. And he will be burnt eternally for his enmity towards the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
ILQ | Teachers’ Book Al- Masad 4. The accompanying threat towards his wife: “and his wife, the carrier of firewood,” Abu Lahab’s wife used to put thorns and sharp woods in the paths where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺused to walk in an attempt to hurt him. That is why she is nicknamed the “carrier of firewood”, to show that her efforts were useless. 5. The specific punishment for Abu Lahab’s wife: “she will have a rope of palm fibre round her neck.” Because of her evil habit of putting harmful things in the path of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, she will be repaid with the same thing many times greater. She will have a rope made out of palm fibres, sharp woods, and thorns around her neck. And she will be dragged into hell with that rope. Such is the punishment for Abu Lahab. So great was his antagonism towards Prophet Muhammad ﷺthat Allah allocated a special surah that condemns him and provided a special punishment for him in the Hereafter. The lesson we can learn from this surah is that we must love Prophet Muhammad ﷺand must not insult him. We also must not be mean and hurtful to people, rather, we should always try to be supportive and helpful towards other people.
