ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS Justin Edwab Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Criminal Practice Award A 2006 graduate of Penn State Dickinson Law School, Justin Edwab be- gan his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. James Blaney, J.S.C. He joined the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office in 2007. During his early years with the office, Justin exhibited excellent prosecutorial temperament, self- discipline and passion to execute justice for the victims of crime. Highly capable, dili- gent, and hard-working, he spent several years handling a high volume of violent criminal cases including robbery, carjacking, assault, as well as guns and drug offens- es. Justin became a gifted trial attorney. Just as importantly, he became known, by the defense bar and the Courts, as a man of his word who was fair, compassionate and always sought justice. For all these reasons, he was assigned in 2014 as a trial attorney in the Homicide Unit. Justin is committed to assisting families devastated by violence, helping them navigate the often complex and slow moving criminal justice system to bring them some measure of justice. Acting Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, recently pro- moted Justin to Director of the Adult Trial Section at the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, where he demonstrates professionalism with adversaries, the bench, victims, and the community. O’Connor, Parsons, Lane & Noble, LLC Civil Practice Award O’Connor, Parsons, Lane & Noble, LLC, was created in 2008 by the merger of two personal injury law firms when Jerry O’Connor, Paul O’Connor, and Greg Noble merged their Chatham firm with Scott Parsons and Bill Lane’s firm in Westfield. Jerry O’Connor was a dean of the New Jersey personal injury bar for dec- ades, and his passion for injured clients remains the cornerstone of the firm today, which is one of the finest medical malpractice law firms in the state. Greg Noble has added to the firm’s repertoire by representing plaintiffs in employment discrimination matters, obtaining a record-setting verdict in Essex County in 2011. The firm tries cases from Bergen County to Cape May County, and everywhere in between. What Paul, Scott, Bill, and Greg never forget is that every case is a story about people, often a heartbreaking one regarding people whose lives have been negatively impacted due to someone else’s unlawful choices or negligence. The lawyers at OPLN never forget that each case represents an adult, infant, or family who means the world to loved ones, and whose lives have been deeply impacted. Paul, Scott, Bill, and Greg have been recognized by Best Lawyers, Super Lawyers, Top 100 Trial Lawyers, Million Dollar Advocates Forum, and Best Law Firms. It is no overstatement to observe that the firm comes highly recommended by their peers and richly rewarded by their industry. Jerry O’Connor was described in his 2015 obituary as a “gentle-man” based upon the way he treated people, clients, and adversaries. Paul, Scott, Bill, and Greg are gentlemen who have continued Jerry’s tradition of being great people and amazing trial lawyers.

SAMUEL S. SAIBER PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Earning a livelihood practicing our profession is important, but unless, with it all, we have a continuous sense of our obligation to promote justice and the public good, we have failed to carry out our solemn pledges to practice our profession. -- Samuel S. Saiber After serving more than 25 years as a New Jersey Superior Court Judge, including the last decade serving with distinction as the As- signment Judge in Essex County, Judge Costello returned to the private legal community in 2015. As Assignment Judge, Judge Costello had judicial responsibility for all trial courts in Essex County, including the county’s municipal courts and more than 100,000 filings per year across all trial courts. Judge Costello supervised approximate- ly 1,000 employees and managed a $55 million annual budget for the state’s busiest courthouses. It is not an overstatement that the Essex County Bar Association is a tenant in the Essex County Courthouse only because of Judge Costello’s determined leadership and her dedication to the organized bar. Appointed to the bench in 1989 by then Governor Thomas Kean, Judge Costello spent the first 15 years of her judicial career in Hudson County, serving first in the Criminal Division where she became Presiding Judge, then in the Civil Division where she directly supervised the Special Civil Part. She served also in the Family Division where she again became Presiding Judge. Judge Costello served as a member of nu- merous Supreme Court committees, including as Vice Chair of the Judicial Education Committee. Prior to her judicial service, Judge Costello was in private practice as a partner in the law firm of McAlevy & Costello where she attained Certified Criminal Trial Attorney status in 1986. After law school, Judge Costello clerked for the Honorable Thomas McCole in the Hudson County Superior Court. Judge Costello now concentrates her practice at Chiesa Shahinian & Giantomasi PC on mediation and arbitration of civil, chancery, and matrimonial matters including probate, commercial litigation and labor and employment disputes. Judge Costello received her J.D. from Rutgers Law School and her B.A. from Seton Hall University. Honorable Patricia K. Costello (Ret.)
