INTRODUCTION The purpose of this document is empower thestudents of Jammu & Kashmir to be employableat global level through mastery over English and soft skills.

01LISTENING The first and foremost step in a person’s self improvement is good listening skills. Listening skills are among those things in life that you can use to your advantage when you know more about them and how the concept works. The advantages of being a good listener are vast. This skill can positively affect many parts of our everyday life and interaction with people. Nevertheless, it is a skill that is overlooked in today’s unmindful society. Improving your listening skills is a sure-fire way to strengthen your personal relationships and help you in your career as well. STORY ON LISTENING TRAITS Duck Race Quick and Quack were two brave, sporty little ducks who lived with their mother. Both were really fast, and were always competing against each other. They raced each other in all sorts or places. On land, sea and air; running, swimming, or flying. One day, after visiting their Uncle Ducklass upriver, Quick shouted \"last one home is a goose!\" and both ducks swam quickly downriver. They both knew the way well, but Quack had been preparing a trick for some time. He had realized that the current in the middle of the river was stron- ger, and would help him. So, even though Mother Duck had told them never to swim in the middle of the river, Quack paddled over to it. \"I'm old enough now to swim here,\" he thought to himself.

It wasn't long before he realized his mother had been right. He was goingmuch faster than Quick, and was developing a big lead. Quick was notamused. He never disobeyed his mother, and now his obedience meant hewas going to lose the race! As they went on, the current got stronger. Quacktriumphantly crossed the finishing line, without realizing he was headedstraight for a big whirlpool in the middle of the river. Before he could react, there he was spinning around in it, unable to escape.Getting him out of there was no easy matter. No duck was strong enough toswim in those waters, and poor Quack kept swallowing water. The fact that hishead was spinning like a top didn't help matters much either.Fortunately, a cow from a nearby farm came by and, seeing Quack, wadedin and rescued him, to prevent him from drinking all the water in the river. When he was on dry ground, he remained dizzy for quite some time. That pro-vided quite a laugh for the various different animals that had been watching. That day, Quick understood that he had done well to listen to his mother, eventhough at first it might have seemed the difficult option. As for Quack... well...Quack could not forget that experience, even though he wanted to. Fromthen on, whenever he touched a drop of water, he fell to the floor and spunround three times before being able to get up again.

02 STRENGTHS Another important step in student empowerment is to make them understand their unique strengths and their limitations. Most of us do not spend enough time to analyze our strengths. It is important to take time to identify your strengths. Strengths are our personal characteristics, which help us to be more creative. Some people identify their strengths and build their success on them. Your strength comprises of skills, knowledge, talent, and personal traits. Also, the ability to see a situation from different perspectives and get the work done even in the face of difficult obstacles are worthy strengths. STORY ON STRENGTH EXHIBITION

Johnny Jones was a nice, popular boy, who everyone loved. He was somuch fun, so good, and so kind with everyone that they treated him wonderfully, alwaysgiving him presents and looking out for him. And as everything he needed was given tohim without asking, Johnny became weak. He was so spoiled by everyone that hecouldn't endure any hardship, nor did he have any strength of will. You would think that himhaving a little stone in hisshoe was almost killing him. Ifhe felt cold he would put somany clothes on that youwould think he was at theNorth Pole. If it was hot, hecouldn't keep his top on foreven a minute. And if hewere to fall and hurt himself...well, that was a nightmare.Someone would have to callan ambulance. He became so well known for being weak that one day Johnny heard a mother saying to herson \"Come on, my boy, get up and stop crying. You're behaving like Johnny Jones\". Thatmade Johnny feel so ashamed that he didn't know what to do. But he was sure that he would prefer to be known as a good boy rather than a softie. For several days he tried to see how much he could put up with hardship. It was true: he couldn't endure anything. Any little pain made him cry like a tap. Worried, he spoke to his father about all this, though he was afraid maybe he would be laughed at for having such worries. His father, far from laughing at Johnny, told him that the same had happened to him when he was a boy, but that a teacher had taught him a secret trick to turn him into the toughest boy of all. \"And what is the trick?\" \"Eat a candy less, study a minute more, and count to five before crying\". Johnny could not believe it. \"Just that?\" \"Yes, just that.\" - said his father, \"It's very simple, but I warn you that it won't be easy.\"

Johnny went off happy as a lark, ready to followthat advice to the letter. He went to see hismother, and she noticed how happy he waswhen she offered him two candies. \"One candyless\", thought Johnny, so he only took one. Itwasn't easy, though, and he realized his fatherand been right. To leave one candy sitting in hismother's hand really took it out of him! That sameafternoon he had another chance to put thetrick into practice, by studying for one minutemore. The outcome was that he missed the firstminute of his favorite program! But havingachieved this gave him a great feeling of satis-faction. The same happened when he bumpedinto the corner of the kitchen table. He onlymanaged to count to four before crying, but hismother was well impressed at that.Over the following days Johnny kept applyingthe motto to his life. Eat one candy less, studyone minute more, and count to five beforecrying. And the more he put this into practice, the easier it got. Before long he realized that notonly could he eat fewer candies, study moreminutes, and cry fewer times, but he could alsodo things that before would have seemed im-possible, like eating vegetables or running for agood while. Happy, he took some paper and wrote down t chest had a sign on it, saying \"Impo

SELF-03 CONFIDENCE Another important step in student empowerment is to make them understand their unique strengths and their limitations.

STORY ON SELF-CONFIDENCE WALKING NIGHTMAREPogo the Ogre, Big Giant, and The Abominable One had spent hundreds of years lockedup in Monster Prison. They had entered voluntarily, when they realized that frighteningchildren wasn't a good way to make a living. Since then, the three of them had been sadand lonely figures. Frightening children was the only thing they knew how to do well. Theylost all hope, and felt useless. They had already served their full jail sentences severaltimes, but when they were told they were free to go, they answered by asking where theycould go, and what could they do, if all they knew in life was scaring people...However, all that changed on the day they locked up Nightmare. Nightmare was a tinylittle monster, who devoted very little time to frightening others and spent most of the daysleeping. But when awake, he was great fun. He told hundreds of stories of how he had changedpeople's dreams to make them more amusing, and of how these changes almost alwaysturned out so badly that they would have scared anyone. Pogo the Ogre, and his friends, loved Nightmare's stories, but they had to wait for the sleepyhead to get up so he could tell them. Now, that was by no means easy. It seemed not even an earthquake could wake the guy. Until one day, when the three monsters com- bined their terrific cries. Nightmare woke up with a start. He looked at them, wide-eyed, but he didn't seem frightened or angry. Rather, he seemed happy. \"Great!\" he said, \"I've always wanted to get up early. That way you enjoy the day much better. You know what? You guys should work as alarm clocks. I know a lot of sleepyheads who would really thank you for it.\" The three monsters were so happy to hear those words. Finally they could be of some use! After so many years, it turned out they could do much more than they had believed. And they could do it without frightening or bothering chil- dren. That very day they left the prison, ready to make their first alarm call. And so it was that the three monsters became famous for their special service for sleepyheads, and were happy to have understood that there is always something nice we can do, just waiting to be discovered.

STORY ONTIMEMANAGEMENT

TIME04MANAGEMENTIt is rightly said “Time and Tide wait for none”. An individual should understand the value oftime for him to succeed in all aspects of life. Time Management refers to managing timeeffectively so that the right time is allocated to the right activity. People who waste time arethe ones who fail to create an identity of their own. Effective time management allows indi-viduals to assign specific time slots to activities as per their importance. Time Managementrefers to making the best use of time as time is always limited. Time management skills are notonly valuable in job-hunting, but also in many aspects of life – from revising for examinationsto working in a vacation job. Also time management has come up as a subject in the man- agement field to reach the goal of increasing productivity. The Unending Well of WondersLouis was the kind of kid whose favorite activity was lying about staring at the ceiling, or sittingquietly in front of the TV. He knew his parents didn't like that he spent so much time like that, but he liked the comfort of that kind of life and, after all, he wasn't doing badly at school ...One day, while out hiking, Louis sat down to rest a while and the next thing he knew, he hadlost the rest of the group. But right at that moment, while getting to his feet, he was stunnedto see a little dwarf walking quickly through the trees. The dwarf seemed so angry, grumblingand moaning, that he didn't realize that a huge boulder was rolling down the hill towards him.And but for the reflexes of Louis, who jumped in to save the dwarf, the little guy would havebeen crushed. After recovering from the shock, the dwarf was so grateful that he insisted he take Louis toshow him one of the dwarves' secret places. So off they went through the mountains and arrived at a small clearing. In the middle of theclearing there appeared to be a well.

This is a magic well,\" explained the dwarf.\"Every so often some wonderful gifts come out of it, and whoeveris here at the time can use them and enjoy them.\"Louis didn't know whether to believe this story, but at that samemoment a really cool bicycle appeared from out of the well.\"Can I can keep it?\" Louis asked.\"Sure, it's all yours! Enjoy it!\"Louis went over and spent a long time looking at the bike, really excited by it. Finally, hegot on to try it out. But not for long, because without any warning, the bike disap-peared, and Louis' backside hit the dirt. He would have been really angry with thedwarf, had it not been for the fact that the costume of his favorite superhero had justcome out of the well, complete with all the accessories. Again, Louis spent a long timeinspecting everything about the costume. And again, just after he had dressed himselfin it and started playing, the gift disappeared. And so it continued. Before his eyes came a procession of all the things Louis liked, butnot a single one of them stuck around for very long. At first he was angry because hewanted to keep everything to take home, but realizing that this wouldn't be possible, hecontented himself with enjoying each of the wonders provided by the well, until hecould do so no longer. He sat down and had a rest with his friend the dwarf, and the dwarf explained that the well hadalways worked this way, constantly making wonderful gifts, and those gifts always disappearedshortly afterwards. And he told Louis how everyone ended up accepting that the well wasbetter that way, offering something new every time.Time passed so quickly that, before they knew it, everyone was out looking for Louis. Hearingtheir shouts, the dwarf ran away, and only had time to say:\"I can't let them see me, and neither can I allow you to remember where this place is. But lestyou forget me I'll present you with a gift.\"He handed Louis a small parcel, and before disappearing the dwarf said: \"It's a miniature copyof the well, but it's just as magical. Learn to look at it in the right way, and it will provide you withgreat joy. Goodbye, and thanks for saving me!\"With all the commotion that ensued after he was found in the woods, Louis forgot about the giftuntil a few days later. He decided to open it in his room, as if it were a secret, only to discoverthat the gift was a simple clock with a picture of Louis playing near the well.\"The dwarf was kidding me,\" he thought.\"I knew it would have been too much to get a real copy of that well.\"

So Louis sat back on the bed to practice his specialty of whiling away the time. However, whenthe hand of the clock had turned five minutes, a small glow came out of the clock, and the pic-ture of Louis happily playing burst into a thousand pieces, which came back together to form theimage of a child looking lonely and bored. The same happened another five minutes later, andevery time five more minutes had passed without Louis having done anything.Louis began to understand. What if the gifts from the well were the minutes themselves? Was thatwhat the dwarf had been talking about when he said Louis needed to learn how to look at thegift properly? That way Louis would have everything: time cannot stop, and therefore you have to really makesure you enjoy the gifts you're given when they come, because once they go they're gone forgood and will never return. Then he thought about the minutes he had been given in life, so many of them spent watchingtelevision or lying in his room, and those minutes would never return! And he realized that, as withgifts from the well, you had to start enjoying them right away. And ever since that day it was as though there were two or three Louis' in the house. Whereverhe was, he learned to open his eyes and to discover in every moment what a fantastic gift he hadbeen given by the well of time. And in this way he learned to read books he would never haveread, play games he never would have played, make friends he never would have made, andlearning lessons he never would have learned ... He learned to see everything around him as agift, a gift to be enjoyed to the maximum. And even when watching TV now, it seemed like hewatched it with more interest, because he was no longer willing to waste any of the gifts given bythe magic well of time.

05 GOAL SETTING Goal setting is the process of deciding what you want to accomplish and devising a plan to achieve the result you desire. Working without goals and targets in an organization would be similar to a situation where the captain of the ship loses his way in the sea. Set targets for yourself and make sure they are realistic ones and achievable. STORY ON

WHICH ROAD? On the best sunny day, the most powerful magnifying glass will not light paper if you keep moving the glass. But if you focus and hold it, the paper will light up. That is the power of concentration. A man was traveling and stopped at an intersection. He asked an elderly man, “Where does this road take me?” The elderly person asked, “Where do you want to go?” The man replied, “I don’t know.” The elderly person said, “then take any road. What difference does it make?” How true. When we don’t know where we are going, any road will take us there. Suppose you have all the football eleven players, enthusiastically ready to play the game, all charged up, and then someone took the goal post away. What would happen to the game? There is nothing left. How do you keep score? How do you know you have arrived? Enthusiasm without direction is like wildfire and lads to frustration. Goals give a sense of direction. Would you sit in a train or a plane without knowing where it was going? The obvious answer is no. Then why do people go through life without having any goals?N GOAL SETTING

DECISION 07MAKINGDecision making is the thought process of selecting a logical choice from the availableoptions, which results in the selection of a belief or a course of action among severalalternative possibilities. Every decision making process produces a final choice, whichmay or may not prompt action. The decision making process is a key to leadership. STORY ON DECISION MAKING THE KID IN A CANDY STOREA kid walked into a candy store with his dad and was bedazzled by the array of treats on offer.“What should I choose? What should I choose? What should I choose?” He asked himself.“Come on son, we don’t have all day,” his dad said.“These are my favorites. No wait, these are my favorites.”He walked along the aisles, picking up bags and putting them back.He just couldn’t make up his mind.“Quick son, make up your mind, we have to go,” His impatient dad said.Frantically, the boy ran around the store, his eyes moving from one shelf to another, but all of the optionslooked so good and he couldn’t make a decision.Eventually, the dad had enough, grabbed his son by the hand and they walked out of the store emp-ty-handed. The young boy had tears in his eyes. He wanted them all, but ended up with nothing becausehe couldn’t choose just one. We’re all that boy.The world is that candy store. We have a myriad of options available to us, but if we don’t make a decision about our career, education, relationships, investments, church or other important issues, we end up empty-handed.Sometimes we worry about making the wrong choice. What if we regret the direction that we take and it’s too late to go back? The bigger danger is that we make no decision at all and end up going nowhere and doing nothing.
