TUNBRIDGE WELLSTUNBRIDGE WELLSLocated in one of the finest parts of Kent, Tunbridge Wells Hockey Club boasts 4 outstandingladies teams and a huge junior section, not to mention 5 aspiring men’s sides. Its charmingsetting in the quaint Royal Spa Town has, over the years, been dominated by larger rivalhockey clubs, but the last few years has seen a period of unrest in the league tables. TWHChas somewhat upset the apple cart in the local area with their ladies 1XI now playing EastPremier and teetering on the verge of perhaps vying for a place in National League. Players who are pretty much born and bred Tunbridge Wellians (as they are so called) are the foundation of the club and have risen from the ranks of the junior section and up in to the ladies’ teams. We also have strong linkswith both the University of Nottingham and NottinghamTrent University. We want to maintain our current healthy playingmembership and continue to recruit junior players. Wehave plans to retain the membership at the U16 andabove category. Continued improvement of our facilitieswill always be a long term goal. The club has aspirations to gain promotion to level 5in the next five years and for our ladies section to gainpromotion to The Premiership. EASTBOURNE EAGLESEASTBOURNEEAGLESIt has recently been announced that the Eastbourne Eagles are due to compete in the NationalLeague in 2015. Sport in Profile Magazine caught up with the club’s Joint Press Officer PaulWatson to find out more about the set up that they have in place. He started by telling us about his involvement, saying,“I have watched speedway at Eastbourne since 1994,although I have been following the sport since 1965.I started going to Eastbourne after I moved to Sussexfor work reasons. My main role is to try and generate as much publicityfor the club as possible. We have a website, Facebookpages and are on Twitter. The biggest challenge forspeedway - as it is for many smaller sports in the UK- is trying to get publicity on a national scale.Speedway, like most motor-cycle sport, is down the listbehind football. This tends to feed into the local mediatoo. The local press has traditionally been supportiveof speedway in Sussex and that remains the case. However, the circulations of these newspapers aregreatly reduced over the last ten years or so.It is a bit cross your fingers and hope for the bestsituation at the moment. We know the currentpromoters of the sport at Eastbourne will not be takingthe club into the 2015 season. However, anotherperson or people may come forward and wish to takeover the club. It is also possible that the owner maydecide to continue running the sport at the stadium, which he owns. At time of writing we are involved in a 40 ISSUE 02

EASTBOURNE EAGLEScommunication as you can with the supporters andnever forget we are in the entertainment business.Speedway itself faces many challenges; particularlyleague speedway in the UK. The country has droppeddown the “pecking order” of other European countriesand we often come off second best when there arefixture clashes with matches on the continent.A sensible way forward needs to be found so that teamsare not forever searching for guest replacements forstars who are riding elsewhere. My speedway life started as a baby in the pram at Rayleigh Weir but they closed and moved to Ryehouse. As life goes on I moved to London and went to Hackney where I met up with John Wainwright who was riding for Newcastle. I went on to help him in the pits when he moved back to Ryehouse, helping him with a little bit of sponsorship as well. I moved to Kent and had to support the eagles top flight speedway and a young Nickie Pederson. After a little while I started sponsoring heat13 through my business. I give the team steak when they get a maximum score. It is too big a club to close their gates so many great names have ridden for the club and with the new youth system they have many more to come.So long live the eagles. 42 ISSUE 02

It now attracts around 150 competitors each year and is a trulyinternational event attracting competitors from all parts of the globe including Germany,Australia, France, Italy, Poland, South Africa, USA, Spain and more.Event representative Jen Walsby took the timeto tell us more saying, “I moved to LlanwrtydWells in 2010 and in the first summer took partin the World Bog Snorkelling Championships, attempting the world record. I thought I’dmade good time: 2mins 30 seconds, but wasa minute off the record!Since then I have helped to marshal theevent - timing snorkelers, selling t-shirts, etc.and in 2014 took over the organisation of theevent with my partner and 3 friends. My favourite memories include watchinga darlek try to swim the bog and last yeara journalist from Australia covered in pinkballoons, she struggled to get in and out, butamazingly swam both lengths. The pleasure of guests who come to takepart in the event is greatly rewarding as is thewelcome they receive from local people. Forme the biggest challenge is fitting in breakfastfor our B&B guests before dashing to the bogsite and being ready for the day.The enthusiasm and tenacity of GordonGreen the originator of the event andsubsequent organisers have been key tothe event’s success, but it would be nothingwithout the fun loving people who come totake part in all weathers from around Britainand across the globe. 44 ISSUE 02

Both their Promoter David Helmsley and Team Manager Norrie Allen recently travelled to the final round of the Grand Prix Series in Poland with the target of speaking to Jason Doyle and another unknown rider. Doyle, the Rapid Solicitors Lions number 1, held a preliminary discussion with Norrie Allan on practice day but was unable to make an appointment to talk with Helmsley on the Saturday. Speaking to their official website after the event Helmsley said, ““It was a little disappointing that the meeting did not happen but it was not a total waste of time as it gave me an opportunity to have a discussion with another rider who we are interested in offering terms to and Norrie was able to sound out other options we have in mind about the possibility of riding for Leicester next season. What is for certain is that we are committed to building a team that has the potential to play a part in the chase for honours next season. To do that our home form has to be more robust than it was and whilst we picked up the odd consolation bonus point away from home those near misses will need to be converted into wins if we are to achieve our goal of improving upon the results of the season just ended.” Leicester Lions are clearly a set-up looking to make progress and it will be exciting to see how they are able to develop over the coming years. Following the end of the season they had the following message for their supporters on their official website, “David Hemsley and the management team would like to thank everyone who has supported Leicester Speedway during our first season in Elite League racing.
