Basingstoke TownYour Community, Your Game We have a project entitled “Your Community, positive way upon the community whatever walk of Your Game” aimed at providing opportunities for life they may come from and provide opportunity for participation in football to primary and secondary participation in sports that otherwise may be out of aged children focusing on mainstream, disabled, their reach. disadvantaged and hard to reach children from low income families and those not actively participating in extracurricular recreational sports. At present we visit schools within the local area providing after school clubs and coaching within lesson times to mainstream and schools for children with disabilities, helping to build good relationships within the community. Our aim is to be in up to 10 schools by the end of the school year helping us to impact on up to 300 children per week. Sessions are a varied programme of footballing activities with a focus on development of individual technique and skill and also development of personal and social skills through teamwork and small sided games. We are especially proud of the work we are doing to provide opportunities for children with various disabilities, and the support we receive from staff at Dove House and at Icknield – a school for children with severe disabilities is fantastic. It is nice to see the genuine joy on the faces of the children participating in the activities, and the feedback from the parents and staff is extremely positive. The main aims of “Your Community, Your Game” are: • To increase community participation by young people in sporting activities. • Help promote active healthy lifestyles within the community. • Reach out to disadvantaged children and provide them with opportunities for participation in sport. • Provide a positive introduction to sport within a pressure free environment. • Increase awareness of the club within the community and provide tickets to home fixtures for disadvantaged families attending our sessions. At Basingstoke Town Football Club, we recognise not everybody has the same opportunities, so by running this project we hope that we as a football club can be a positive influence and impact in a52 Issue 50

So long as they are able to retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions they will have a good chance of mounting a title challenge. One of the highlights of the team’s performances so far this time around has been the attacking brand of football that they have managed to produce. This is reflected by the fact that they have scored 15 goals already at a rate of more than 2 per match. This has certainly meant that any supporters attending their fixtures have been well entertained and should encourage more of the community to get behind them in the future. This in turn has the potential to provide them with some valuable additional revenue. Risca United is not a club to focus solely upon their senior section however and they also have a number of youth sides in place. These teams look to provide young players from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any team to be able to produce their own talent and it will be major boost for their first XI if they are able to rely upon young talent coming through the ranks. It will certainly be exciting to see how their juniors are able to develop over the coming years. Risca United’s good start to the season is a reflection of all the hard work that has been put into the club in recent times. If they can continue in the same manner over the coming years they should be able to look forwards to a bright and successful future.72 Issue 50
