MANAGING TO MANAGE AN By SHERRY PRICE Collectively, our mental health has suffered this past year and the enormous emotional toll has been egregious. It is of no surprise that given the demands that COVID has thrust upon women in particular, with schedule changes affecting their children’s schooling and their work/home balance, that women have largely driven the spike in alcohol consumption. Clearly, over-drinking is one of the quickest ways to sabotage physical, mental, and emotional health and zap one’s energy, motivation, and productivity. Most realize its affect on their system and would choose to adjust their drinking patterns to realize the benefits of a healthier lifestyle, and a revitalized energy, however, our society normalizes drinking with a focus on treatment and rehab centers at a time when drinking takes over one’s life. The better option is to nip the habit in the bud before it becomes a major factor. Preventative strategies do exist and most over-drinkers can learn to cut back successfully without total abstinence. Cognitive-based therapy can transform one’s desire and one’s relationship with alcohol with its focus on reprogramming the brain with concrete tools to successfully manage consumption. A first step to habit change is becoming aware of one’s triggers. Knowing how the brain perceives certain people, places, time of the day, and situations will uncover the emotional reasons why over-drinking is likely to occur. The strategies that follow focus on emotional management, allowing one to manage the urges properly and decondition those triggers, leading to confidence and control over consumption. Total abstinence is not required. These strategies can be learned rather quickly, and confidentially online or in private sessions, allowing one to imbibe as they selectively choose without compromising their good health. Care To Be Rescued? By Catriona Rutherford Julie McLaughlin, founder of CanineJulz is a firm believer that your canine friend sharing your household will return every bit of love that you care to give, and will be there for you during the good times and each and every challenging moment. As a Certified Dog Trainer with over 10 years continuous experience training dogs and their owners, she holds membership with the International Association of Canine Professionals, the American Kennel Club Good Citizen Evaluator, and with her dog Amstel has joined Therapy Dogs International. Born out of an aspiration to help dogs and their families communicate effortlessly and positively, CanineJulz takes a purely holistic approach to dog training, using positive reinforcement as a proven method toward success. Julie believes dogs should be assessed as a whole being and not just from their behavior. She takes into account the dog’s history, including any known trauma, the dog’s temperament and attitude, current behaviors and any known triggers, which guides her while teaching the dog and its owner at their own pace. Without a timeline for communication, the teaching method is to help dog owners understand intuitively and somatically what the dog is expressing, working toward the ultimate goal of better communication between dog and owner. Believing that every dog is a treasure, and having trained countless service dogs, therapy dogs, rescue dogs in rehabilitation, dogs of all sizes and breeds, Julie’s passion is working with local animal rescues to rehabilitate and help them regain confidence. Knowing the positive affect a loving dog can have on those struggling with a medical hardship, CanineJulz began a program titled Bella’s Gift. Julie provides a free training retreat through CanineJulz for a rescue dog assigned to a medically challenged individual, which has proven highly successful. At times while not in training with dogs and their owners, you will find her at anyone of several rescues volunteering her time in support. There can be no better friend than one found at your local animal rescue. Caninejulz.com Photography by Gilda Adler
