LthEeTMTEARYOFRROM 5BurlingtonMagNC.com Over the past month a singular con- versation has been dominating the airwaves and social media in Burling- ton — that of violence in our commu- nity. And of that, particularly, concerns about youth violence. A string of related shootings involving young people in our community shooting at homes in a re- taliatory manner has led our community to ask some very important questions about how we got here and what can be done to make our community safer. It’s important to note in this conversation that the bulk of violent crime that we recently experienced in Burlington strings from one line of back-and-forth retaliation between young people. It is not random, and it is an indicator of deeper challenges facing cities like Burlington across our nation. A quick glance over headlines and community conversa- tions about gun violence will usually direct you to the same key talking points: access to guns, drugs, gangs, and the all-too-familiar “kids these days” or “back in my day.” These points ignore the much deeper, long-term causes of commu- nity gun violence which are: easy access to guns by people at elevated risk for violence, income inequality, concentrated poverty, underfunded public housing, under-resourced public services, underperforming schools, police brutality and lack of police legitimacy, and lack of opportunity and perceptions of hopelessness. That last point is one we’ve heard more and more of from our residents, before and during the pandemic. When we consider all these conditions and evaluate them on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis, we can match them to crime data and begin to make targeted investments in our community that lead to long-term reductions in gun violence. As we move our community forward, our focus must be on more than the traditional and short-term bandage of having more police on the streets. More police on the streets target- ing low-level crime ultimately makes this whole narrative worse and inflicts deeper wounds on our community. Effec- tive, long-term solutions take hard work and investment in programs like job training, youth development opportunities, recreation and community centers, after school programs, pro- grams that clean up blighted property, high-quality affordable and stable housing, and affordable health and mental health services. In addition to these programs, developing a commu- nity-based Cure Violence model can bring healing, de-escala- tion, and recovery for our community through understanding and action with the mindset that violence behaves like a dis- ease. Together our community has struggled through decades of adversity that created the environment of today and the work we do together helps us cure and recover. At every step along the way, we must always value each other as humans who deserve our compassion and forgiveness as we strive for a better Burlington together. Meet Edna Brown Mark, a local author from our Burlington community. Yet another wonderful example of the entrepreneurial spirit that keeps Burlington STRONG. A widow, mother of two sons and stepmother of a daughter, Edna Brown Mark is also a local author. After forty years as a manager at UNC Chapel Hill North Carolina and Piedmont Health Senior Care in Burlington, Edna retired. Currently, Edna serves as a board director for Piedmont Health Services and as chairman of Piedmont Health Board Development Committee in Chapel Hill. After retiring from healthcare, she pursued her lifelong passion to write books of value that could touch hearts in a positive way. With so much confusion going on in the world today, much of which has resulted in division, fear, hate, violence, depression and lack of self-worth, Edna is determined to help make the world a better place by elevating humanity and encouraging the reader to invite self-reflection through her writings. Her new book, Warm Socks: Life Lessons from My Father, urges the reader to search within to find their true purpose in life, rather than having it imposed upon them by other people who think they know what your purpose should be. These days, when she's not writing, Edna enjoys cooking, nature walks and spending time with her two granddaughters. Warm Socks: Life Lessons from My Father can be purchased now on Amazon.com. Also available on Kindle. Available soon on Barnes and Noble (links supplied below). our TOWN This year marks the 120th anniversary of the Burlington Graded School. For the previous burlington's 45 years, children living in and near Company GRADED Shops (as Burlington was once known) had been SCHOOL educated in a hodgepodge of private schools, church schools, and public “free” schools. Burlington Graded School Some were good, some were bad, but all were substandard because students of all ages were 2200 Burlington Magazine | FALL 202 1 taught in the same room with few books and only benches for seating. Concerned residents, especially those with school-age children, had been lobbying Burlington’s government for years to establish a graded school, where students of different ages and abilities could be taught together, but to no avail; therefore, a small group of leading citizens decided to do it themselves. First, they bought the former Methodist Academy on Broad Street on March 19, 1901 for $2,500. Then they organized themselves into an official school board, headed by Wesley Cates, a local coal dealer, and were sworn in March 23, 1901, in board member Jim Albright’s insurance office in the Rauhut building (still standing at the corner of East Front and Spring streets). While the purchase of the Methodist Academy gave the school board sufficient property on which to locate the new graded school, and any needed expansions, the academy’s one building did not provide enough space for the planned eight grades. In fact, only two grades, plus an auditorium, a music room and two offices would fit in that one main building. Consequently, a new four-classroom building was constructed adjacent to the academy’s main building. In addition, the former East Burlington Free School building, located in the middle of Means Street (now Maple Avenue) was ordered dismantled on April 19, 1901, and moved to the site of the academy to provide three more classrooms. Although functional, not everyone was happy with the facilities and both locals and residents of other towns made fun of it, saying that it looked like a collection of chicken coops. (That was especially true after the school board had to add five more small wooden buildings
to accommodate Burlington’s growing student Burlington Free School population.) Indeed, the name “Chicken Coop School” was used to refer to the Burlington Methodist Academy - Main Building Graded School for the next 15 years, until a large An estimated 380 students showed up for the first day of new brick building could be constructed. school, Monday, September 2, 1901. Finally, on November 8, 1901, the voters of Burlington approved their new graded school — Due to racial policies in effect at the time, over two months after it had already opened. The “Chicken Coop a separate building was acquired for the city’s School” lasted until the new brick school building (later known as black students. He was a quiet, scholarly man who stressed manners as much as he did education. Beginning on June 14, 1901, the school board met and voted to hire the first of eight teachers. They were Nellie F. Haithcock (1st grade), Myrtle Daughtry (7th grade), and Eunice Kirkpatrick (6th grade). On June 23, E. Lilla Kibler was hired to teach the 8th grade and named principal of the high school department. On July 2, the last four were elected: Etta Staley (5th grade), Susan Lewis Dull (2nd grade), Susie B. Stafford (3rd grade), and Ella Maud Robertson (4th grade). In addition, James P. Roberson was hired as the sole teacher for the Burlington Colored Graded School. Four of the teachers were paid $30 per month, four were paid $35 per month, and Roberson was paid only $25 per month. Interestingly, only two of the first teachers were from Alamance County. It is claimed that Superintendent Curtiss thought local women were “unqualified” to teach. In addition, all of the women had to be unmarried and they had to represent each of the Protestant denominations in Burlington. BurlingtonMagNC.com 2 1
