FACTS About Hearing Loss Whether you're playing with the grandkids or hanging out SYMPTOMS at home with family, you don't Signs and symptoms of hearing loss may include: want to miss a thing! ▶ Muffling of speech and other sounds ▶ Difficulty understanding words, especially when background noise is a factor or when in a crowd ▶ Trouble hearing consonants ▶ Frequently asking others to speak slowly, clearly and loudly ▶ Needing to turn up the volume of the television or radio ▶ Withdrawal from conversations ▶ Avoidance of some social settings HOW HEARING LOSS CAN OCCUR Causes of hearing loss include: Damage to the inner ear. Aging and exposure to loud noise may cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain. When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren't transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs. Higher pitched tones may become muffled to you. It may become difficult for you to pick out words against background noise. Gradual buildup of earwax. Earwax can block the ear canal and prevent conduction of sound waves. Earwax removal can help restore hearing. Ear infection and abnormal bone growths or tumors. In the out- er or middle ear, any of these can cause hearing loss. Ruptured eardrum (tympanic membrane perforation). Loud blasts of noise, sudden changes in pressure, poking your ear- drum with an object and infection can cause your eardrum to rupture and affect your hearing. WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR If you have a sudden loss of hearing, particularly in one ear, seek immediate medical attention. Talk to your doctor if difficulty hearing is interfering with your daily life. Age-related hearing loss occurs gradually, so you may not notice it at first. 6 Randolph Living | MAY ♦ JUN 202 1

our TOWN series The oldest privately-erected marker in the county dates from around1928 and commemorates Andrew historic RANDOLPH COUNTY markers Hunter’s Revolutionary War-era ride down Faith Rock in Franklinville. It consists of a bronze tablet installed by the Franklinville Guilford Battle Chapter of the D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution) on the concrete bridge (built in Faith Rock DAR plaque 1928 1925), across Deep River, just north of the rock. When a Deep River, Franklinville NC new bridge was built in 1986, the plaque was moved to a stone at the footbridge across the river south of the upper mill. The placque inscription reads: “In Memorial, Randolph County Patriots. Faith Rock, 200 yards down the river is where Andrew Hunter in 1781 escaped from David Fanning, Tory, rode Fanning’s horse, Bay Doe, down the rock into the river and to safety.” Rising out of Deep River several hundred feet upstream of the site of Elisha Coffin’s grist mill and textile factory is Franklinville’s major geological landmark, a huge bluestone outcrop known as Faith Rock. It was the setting for one of Randolph County’s most legendary Revolutionary War incidents. While taking a wagon of produce to trade for salt at the Pedee River market on May 2, 1782, local resident Andrew Hunter was captured by the notorious Tory guerrilla leader David Fanning. Facing immediate execution, Hunter made a desperate escape. In Fanning’s words, Hunter “...sprung upon my riding mare, and went off with my saddle, holsters, pistols, and all my papers…we fired two guns at him; he received two balls through his body but it did not prevent him from sitting the saddle, and make his escape.” Enraged, Fanning plundered Hunter’s home, holding his pregnant wife hostage for the return of the horse; however, Fanning’s guerrilla band was forced to release Mrs. Hunter and ride out to join the British evacuation of Charleston, South Carolina. Fanning risked a final return to Randolph on September 5, 1782, solely in an attempt to recover his mare. The incident at Faith Rock is believed to have occurred at this time. Hunter “...was riding the Bay Doe, on the high ground south of Deep River, and not far above the…ford; but found they were heading him in that direction. He then turned his course up the river, but they were there ready to receive him. The only alternative was to surrender, which would mean certain and instant death, or to make a desperate plunge down a precipice, some 50 feet high into 2200 Randolph Living | MAY ♦ JUN 202 1

Entitled “Fanning’s Mare,” the short story is more self-consciously literary than the later historical accounts, but it shares with them the name of Fanning’s horse: “He called her Red Doe, from her resemblance in color to a deer.” Even the earliest accounts agree that the name Fanning’s mare was “Red Doe,” although Carruthers, without explanation, changes the name to “Bay Doe.” For more than 150 years thereafter, the name “Bay Doe” has been the preferred name of Fanning’s mare. TRIAD FOOT EXPERT CARE & ANKLE CENTER RIGHT IN OUR OWN BACKYARD If you are experiencing problems with your feet and ankles, there is no lengthy road trip needed to find relief. Expert care is right in our backyard with Triad Foot & Ankle Center’s Asheboro physicians: Dr. Titorya Stover, DPM, MPH, and Dr. Michael Price, DPM. These foot-focused physicians are a part of a team of eleven medical and surgical foot specialists with offices in Greensboro, Burlington, Asheboro, and Kernersville who all specialize in total foot and ankle care. Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), also known as Podiatrists, are specialized medical professionals that undergo four years of medical school followed by three to four years of surgical residency training—just like any medical doctor or orthopedic surgeon. Contrary to popular belief, podiatrists offer more than nail trims and diabetic foot care. The physicians at Triad Foot & Ankle are highly trained in complex conditions such as heel pain, bunions, hammertoes, reconstructive surgery, nail conditions, sports injuries, fractures, arch pain, and more. Additional time is spent on education and surgical training specifically focused on the pathology of the lower leg in addition to the foot and ankle. These doctors also sub-specialize within their field to address specific areas of interest. For Doctors Stover and Price, these areas of interest range from sports-related injuries to the treatment of foot and limb conditions associated with diabetes. Meet Dr. Stover For many people, their first visit to a podiatrist is brought on as the result of an injury to the foot or ankle. This is exactly how Dr. Titorya Tiyoykiya Stover first learned about the specific practice of podiatry. At 15-years-old a dance injury resulted in the need for foot surgery and also sparked Dr. Stover’s interest in helping others with similar foot and ankle issues. 24 Randolph Living | MAY ♦ JUN 202 1
A Lancaster, South Carolina native, Dr. Titorya Stover earned a Bachelor of Health Science degree at Clemson University before earning her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine with a dual Masters degree in Public Health and Biomedical Science from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. After college, Dr. Stover rounded out her education by serving her residency at the VA Medical Center in Northport, New York, and then made her way to California to join the Specialty Surgical Center at UCLA and the Motion Picture and Television Fund affiliation as a Fellow of Sports Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Stover is certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and specializes in athletic and sports injuries as well as general foot and ankle care. In fact, Dr. Stover feels it may be even more important to consult a podiatrist for advice on the proper ways to care for your feet and ankles before you engage in sports at all, no matter your age. When you consider the myriad of ways that a sports injury might occur to the ankles, feet, and lower legs in fast-paced games like football, baseball, basketball, or even tennis, it is no surprise that Dr. Stover’s expertise is an indispensable asset to Triad Foot and Ankle. Though genetics plays a significant factor in how your feet feel and respond to stressors, the shoes you wear have a pretty significant impact on overall foot health as well. If you are an active person on your feet for most of your day (or actively involved in a sport) it is crucial that you take special care to give a little love to your feet and ankles in the form of well-fitting and activity appropriate shoes. Specially designed orthopedic insoles may be the best way to achieve sufficient support for your active lifestyle. Meet Dr. Price Dr. Michael J. Price first felt drawn to podiatric medicine as a result of watching close family members suffer amputations made necessary by complications associated with diabetes. The desire to prevent others from having to go through similar amputative procedures is what makes Dr. Price particularly interested in wound and diabetic limb treatment. RandolphLiving.com 25
