Editor’s Note Greetings, readers! At the risk of overtly sanguine, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate ourselves. Yes, we, as a species, deserve all the congratulations and felicitations in the world - for (finally) making it through to the last quarter of a lengthy, dismal and arduous orbit round the Sun. I would’ve loved to let off some steam here about our shared detest for the year 2020. However, I highly doubt anyone would like to hear that now; considering the fact that a substantial amount of hate has already been given to this year, to the point that it has had to bear the blame for literally any and every unfortunate incident happening around the world. So, veering far away from the gloom, I would like to dedicate this newsletter to hope and cheerfulness. To (masked) laughter and (socially distanced) togetherness, to grand, joyous (albeit virtual) celebrations. As our much beloved Albus Dumbledore said, “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” Here’s hoping this newsletter serves as a reminder to you all to turn the light on! Cheers, Devika 3
Principal’s Message “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” Charles Darwin In this fast-paced world, where trends change rapidly, it’s important to have the 21st century skills in order to survive and do well in life. These skills like communication skills, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, collaboration, social skills and adaptability have become essential for successful learning and for ensuring that one can thrive in a world where change is constant and learning never stops. Each skill is unique and equally important as they cover various aspects of personality development and broadens one’s horizon. One such skill is Adaptivity, which refers to the ability to adjust oneself readily to different conditions. Humans have the ability to make changes as well adjust to changes. The COVID-19 pandemic was an unexpected and unpredictable event which has led to drastic changes in the world and has tested the adaptability quotient of humankind. Despite the uncertainty and restrictions our teachers and students have not only adapted to the new technologies but have creatively engaged themselves in maintaining the teaching-learning process. We at APS conduct various online activities and competition along with the normal classes in order to ensure that the developmental needs of our students are not hampered. As part of our “Go Green” initiative we have decided to introduce an E-Newsletter which we intend to publish from this academic session. This initiative not only saves paper but also sensitizes our learners towards the environment. Change is the only constant therefore its important to be willing to change. Please enjoy reading! Hell Maybe this wrecked world Smiling through it all, Is another planet's hell Knowing you're not alone. And all of us are merely devils. Your heart aching at the thought Strangled by our perceptions, Of how many have struggled with Bottling up our unjustified fears. this before? Contemplating our existence, The overflowing felicity We let ourselves down everyday Never seems to knock at your door As we fail to overcome Unlike the woe that comes creeping The mind of ours filled with in, dread. Never leaving your side, this malaise your heart has borne. The theory of the human brain works this way When filled with anxiety and This puzzled, treacherous world grieve, Portrays various characters It retaliates with much vigour Fighting their own battles. Enough to rupture the battling veins. Just when your turmoil No longer able to keep Seemed like the last straw, Their shattered pieces together, Destiny throws away another These worn out yet glorious fighters hassle Hope to put a triumphant end Along your still agonized path. To the miserable breakdowns and play pretends. Resembling a cage of torment Ironically, this world is said to be Perfect for human survival. I wonder what 'hell' looks like When our world is this calamitous. -Vatista Kachroo, XII D 21
To Bed Days like these, Filled with despair and misery Naivety and anxiety, Let you get lost inside your own head, Laying on my bed In my sweatpants I wonder if it is dread Or just the existential teen angst Boiling inside of me I wish I could just flee Shortly thereafter, Forward in time The stress – so normal When roaming around is not a Will creep into its rack, crime Pulling us back to the past; Squeeze a lime; Waking up late We’re back in the here and now, The jolly family time - oh so great Though the circumstances Pulling all- nighters Haven’t developed somehow Dwelling in the fanciful world But my senses, Birthed by writers They have made amends Grooving to some hop They have surmised the fact Chop chop, That one day all of this ends It’s over; That one day, I’ll hop on the school I must and so should you bus That one day, I’ll get to meet my Make the most Of the time we have in hand. friends Make room for your hobbies to That one, very fine day, expand All will be gay Make things right Life as we know it would be back. HOW WILL YOU DEFINE THESE NIGHTS? How will you define These nights, so bright? Unfathomable heights Ablaze with heaven's lights How will you define these nights? The moon ever felt shy From the day's eyes Then in those unlit skies Was her beauty purified How will you define these nights? The peace in darkness The solace in silence Why should not the world witness Its charm, its might? How will you define these nights? A dewdrop's ecstasy A firefly's fantasy A shallow depth When the worldly slept And spirits unified That’s how I define these nights. - Surbhi Jain, 12th D 23
HUMANS FOR ANIMALS The last two months have made me a changed human being towards animals as I got to know that animal cruelty has no boundaries, whether through neglect or intentional acts of violence against animals. Pictures of smog-free skies and videos of lions and hyenas strutting across fairways could easily lead us into believing that nature is thriving during the coronavirus pandemic. However the truth is that the next pandemic is already coming, unless we humans change how we interact with wildlife. More than 200 million animals are killed for food around the world every day – just on land. Including wild-caught and farmed fishes, we get a total closer to 3 billion animals killed daily. That totals to 72 billion land animals and over 1.2 trillion aquatic animals being killed for food around the world every year. Every day, species around the planet are going extinct. And for each species that goes extinct, many more become and remain endangered due to other human activities (or rather human cruelties). Some are so critically endangered that they are teetering on the brink of extinction. When humanity exterminates populations and species, it is sawing off the limb on which it is sitting, destroying working parts of our own life-support system. Humanity’s ongoing destruction of wildlife will lead to a shrinking of nature, with the average size of animals falling. Humans need to understand that wildlife is not zoo, elephants are not tusks, cheetahs are not fur and animals are not circus, they are a life in themselves. Humans have forgotten that they used to be none other than species of monkeys and chimpanzees. We should be thanking their evolution which created humankind, rather than giving a one-week pregnant elephant pineapples with firecrackers to eat. If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. What many people eat as meat was once a living being with breath. Leather and animal fur that we use for fashion once belonged to an innocent creature which just had it to cover its flesh. Why don’t we question ourselves that? Are we doing this for some printed paper (money) or for high standards and appearances? Why do we always forget that the earth and its wildlife doesn’t belong to humans, humans belong to them and they have been serving us lifetime what have we done for it? People say that “we are trying to return mother earth’s favour”, have we ever seen a child returning her mother’s love? We all know mother’s love has no cost we can never pay her back, so the correct statement is: we are trying to love mother earth in the way she has loved us. We can't change the world for animals without changing our ideas about them. We have to move away from the idea that animals are for our use to the idea that as sentient beings they have their own inherent value and dignity. Animals are not resources or property with whom we can do what we please, their lives matter very much, and they should be firmly entrenched in our moral community. -Ashwika Amit, 9th D 24
SWORDS AND FLOWERS De novo is your mind like sunrise The palace of your mind is now a paradise Warrior, your body whose armour shed Reveals an art And mighty were the dragons fallen dead To achieve your scars of sliver And your golden heart You aren’t any less than a scripture telling a story Unfathomable by seekers of superficial glory So hold your head high Into the sky Arc your shoulders straight You shall decide your fate Stand with the weak, rise above your demons Break the chains, fly towards freedom Laden with obstacles, a path called power Will lead to change, a feast longing to be devoured. -Divyanshi Sonkeria, 12th D 25
THE HARDSHIPS OF LIFE Living a life Has never been easy And can never be so. Living a life Expects you to stand up for yourself You to fight your problems I know fighting problems Requires strength and mind And not all have that mind or These roads to happiness strength Always test you first But what is more important But you can get on them To live a life is You might get injured How strong you stand. While you try to get on them Life is not an easy journey And maybe even sob for the same It has many hoping roads Which never allow you to get on But after you get on the track them Which leads to happiness You will see yourself as a winner. Although the injuries you’ll get Will pinch you again and again But at the end you will stand strong again. To remain the winner of your life Again you’ll have to pass the tests And the hoping roads aren't easy to get. And so and so the life will sing The song of your victory and failure Again and again. -Oditi Etasha, 11 A 26

AN EXPERIENCE WHEN YOU SHOWED POSIVITY AND REMAINED OPTIMISTIC IN DIFFICULT TIMES Mon grand père est mon meilleur ami. Manya Aggrawal Class 7 B Won First Prize in CONFLUENCE-2020 (Inter School Competition at Hillwoods Academy School) 28

HOPPY AND HIS FRIEND Once upon a time, a little boy went to the Park to play. While playing, he slipped and fell. A kangaroo came and saved the boy. The Kangaroo’s name was Hoppy. The boy and Hoppy became good friends. They both loved to hop around and play together. One day, Hoppy asked the boy to save him from a lion who used to trouble him. They both made a plan. They dropped moonlight pebbles on the path towards the lion’s den. At night the boy and Hoppy followed the shining trail to the lion’s den and blocked the door with a big moonlight stone. The lion could never come out again. So Hoppy and the boy could go to school together and they lived happily ever after. AATMAJ BARAL PANDEY 1-E OUR EMOTIONS JASLEEN KAUR 4-E 42
