foundation phase section break
FOuNDATiON PHASe Foundation Phase report Mrs Glynis Suttie As usual, the year started with the welcoming of the new group of Grade 1 boys. The transition into “big school” is far less stressful now as most of the boys are very familiar with their surroundings at Graeme College. Building the pre-school facility (The Reed Block) was an ingenious idea as the boys settled down very well, and many of these boys have already started making their mark at Graeme College. 2016 has been a busy and productive year. We welcomed Miss Jessica Marais as the Grade 1 educator. Miss Marais understands the culture of Graeme College. As well as having spent four years of her training being mentored in all three Foundation Phase classrooms, Miss Marais was also the Grade 00 class teacher for two years. She has slipped into her role of teaching Grade 1 boys with ease and confidence. Mrs Christelle Hutchinson joined the Graeme College family in January when she became the Grade 00 teacher in The Reed Block. unfortunately, Mrs Hutchinson’s stay has not been long as she has accepted a post to teach French at the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG.) from January 2017. We thank her for the year, and wish her a good experience in her new teaching post. The year began with the compulsory parent meeting. This meeting is always very important as issues of homework, parental involvement and the ever-increasing role of the teacher as educator, nurse, social worker, psychologist, parent and mentor are discussed. Successful fundraisers this year have included the raffle of a stunning oil painting donated by Mrs Bonty Niland, the grandmother of David and Murray Tyson. We are extremely grateful to Mrs Jillian Tyson for the many paintings donated by her mother while her sons have been part of the Foundation Phase. With the monies raised, we have created an extremely well-equipped foundation phase section, probably the most well- equipped department in the entire eastern Province. The annual interhouse gala, the foundation phase ‘Splash Gala’ and the big interhouse athletics day were all very successful sporting functions. Congratulations to Ryan Stobbs (Grade 3), Christopher Zimmerman (Grade 2) and elgenio Oerson (Grade 1), all of whom won medals for being the best athletes in their respective age groups. We are very proud of the foundation phase team swimmers who train under the guidance of Miss Morgan White and we congratulate the following boys who were awarded trophies at the annual interhouse school gala in March: Chase Repinz (u8 breaststroke); Seb Lottering (u8 best all-rounder) and Christopher McLean (best u9 all-rounder). The annual “Mini-Olympics”, held towards the end of the third term, was yet another most enjoyable event. The programme consisted of eight activities and teams of ten boys. The event took the form of a round robin with each boy being actively involved at a different station. As a result, after two and a half hours, the young men were exhausted and ready to go home! Most of the third term was also taken up with rehearsing for the production, “uncle Joe and his one-acre farm.” The boys took to the stage with great pride and it was filled with frogs, mice, fish and all the farm animals present on Farmer Joe’s farm, with Hlumelo Hlangani (Grade 3) playing the lead role as Farmer Joe. We look back on 2016 with a great deal of satisfaction and happiness. Despite periodic croaky voices, sore backs and 142 THe GRAeMiAN 2016
FOuNDATiON PHASe sometimes aching feet, we can confidently say we have provided a unique teaching experience for the Foundation Phase boys. We thank the boys, parents and staff who contribute to the success of the foundation phase. Thank you to the ‘learnership ladies’ – Miss Alice Oberholzer in Grade 1; Miss Tammy Richter in Grade 2 and Miss Melissa du Randt in Grade 3 – for their support and hard work. These young ladies are studying for their teaching degrees through unisa and, although the Foundation Phase teachers are their mentors, we are very fortunate and grateful for their assistance in the classrooms. We thank them for their support and hard work. Mrs Henriette Nel does a sterling job in the remedial area, helping many boys who need just that little bit more confidence, consolidation and help on a one-to-one basis. At the end of the year, it is time to say goodbye to the Grade 3 boys who will be moving into the intermediate phase next year. We wish them well, and will always watch their development and achievements with pride. We thank the parents of these boys for their involvement and support during the last three or four years. The Graeme College Foundation Phase department prides itself on being a department that nurtures, encourages and challenges our boys. Sadly, Mrs Christine Whetton (Grade R) will no longer be part of our staff next year. She has decided to move to east London with her two sons, Graham and David. Mrs Whetton has played an enormous role in setting up the pre-school facility as well as ensuring the growth and success of our little ‘Leopard Cubs’. Although Mrs Whetton will be missed, we thank her for her warm personality and interest in the school, and wish her and her family everything of the best in the years that lie ahead.
