People T his month we introduce Barry Overn, originally from Calgary in Canada and now a resident of Tavira. A self taught artist, he bought his first air brush at the age of 16 to paint a motorcycle helmet. From there he started producing unique T-shirts which led to a variety of commisions, including murals for a night club and also a restaurant and eventually started painting professionally in 1986. In 2000 Barry worked with F&D Scene Changes Ltd. in Calgary painting scenery, backdrops & props for Disney, Broadway, Universal Studios and Cirque du Solei, amongst others. Along with his partner, Nicola, Barry moved to Tavira in 2019, which they actually found by chance. Nicola's parents were here for a two month period, and during a visit the couple took a drive around the East Algarve. Within the hour they decided that Tavira was to be their new home. Today Barry now paints a different type of scenery; the beauty, heart and soul of where he lives. Acrylics are his chosen medium for his work on canvas and an air brush for his murals. In the near future he hopes to have an exhibition and is currently looking for a gallery. All his work is available printed on canvas and he 8 www.eastalgarvemag.com

This philosophy was the driving force for Lino Nunes to invest in himself and take a beekeeping course in Salir. Eight years ago Lino was a newbie to the world of bees, now with knowledge, experience and a wealth of passion, he shares his experiences and lifts a little of the veil of the hidden lives of bees. Lino explains that he has some 70 hives, with each hive containing over a thousand bees, he manages them closely with his father. Before the beekeeping adventure started, the two would see each other once a month, now they see each other several times a week. It has become an activity that has brought father, son, brothers, aunties, uncles, nieces and nephews closer in a fun, healthy and productive way. The family has 4 locations in Santa Catarina where the bees are kept. Having graduated in Nutritional studies, dreams were put on hold and to make ends meet she started working in real estate with her mother. A few years later Milene saw that the government was offering grants for innovative projects. Using the knowledge learned in her studies, Milene put together a plan for a restaurant offering healthy local products, with workshops on how to cook vegetarian food, and also yoga, both body friendly. The project was a winner and her dream began to unfold. The building of choice was originally a rather run down cafe. Along with her boyfriend who is an architect, they renovated the premises into the simple yet elegant restaurant it is today. A good friend Pedro Caboz was working as a pharmacist, however, Milene knew that his real passion was cooking. It didn't take much effort to persuade him to join the team and he is now the head chef. The name 'Figo de Pito' translates to Prickly Pear, chosen as it is a typical, regional fruit of the cactus, but not often used in restaurants. The fruit is in season in July and September which is when you'll find 40

There is also a daily juice; persimmon, apple and orange. Last August saw their two year anniversary. It has been a challenging few years with the Covid restrictions. They have survived by being creative with their ever changing menu and also take-aways and brunch boxes. This year the restaurant won the award for best starter in Olhão voted by Rota do Petiscos with their open taco made with dried Tuna and orange. The future for Figo de Pita looks bright.
